Maya, Aztec, Inca Study Guide
Test Date: Thursday, November 3rd
Format: ​Your first social studies test will contain multiple choice and open response questions. There will also be a
section to match up sentences with the civilization the sentence is talking about.
What You Should Know
➢ You should know the following vocabulary words:
○ City-state - ​a city that is an independent political state with its own ruling government
○ Hieroglyph - ​a picture or symbol representing an idea, an object, a syllable, or a sound
○ Equinox - ​one of the two days in a year when there is an equal amount of daytime and nighttime
○ Causeway - ​a raised road built over water to connect islands to a mainland
○ Litter - ​a chair attached to two beams and carried on the shoulders of several men
○ Conquistador - ​the spanish word for “conqueror”
○ Census -​ a count of the number of people living in a certain area
○ Terrace - ​a flat piece of land carved out of the side of a mountain or hill
➢ You should know the following:
○ Maya:
■ Location: ​Yucatán Peninsula, Mexico & Central America
■ Major Cities: ​Chichen Itza, Copan
■ Known for: ​Astronomy, writing, and math
■ They used hieroglyphs
■ They had slaves
■ Played Pok-Ta-Pok
● You can’t use your hands or feet. You have to get the ball through a hoop.
● If you win, you can take anything you want from the spectators. If you lose, you could be
sacrificed to the gods.
■ How their civilization collapsed: ​No one knows for sure what happened to the Maya, but
scientists now believe their civilization collapsed due to a period of extreme drought.
○ Aztec:
■ Location:​ ​Central Mexico
■ Most famous ruler: ​Montezuma II
■ Major City:​ Tenochtitlan (Tenochtitlan was their capital)
■ Believed the world was about to end at any moment
■ Known for being:​ Fierce Warriors
■ They had slaves
■ How their civilization collapsed:​ ​Hernan Cortes ​attacked the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlan
with the help of enemies of the Aztecs. His army also killed Montezuma II, the Aztec ruler.
Finally, the Spanish brought over many illnesses that the Aztecs had no immunity or medicine to
combat. Almost all of the remaining Aztec died, but a few of their descendants are still alive
today.
○ Inca:
■ Location: ​Along the western coast of South America
■ Most famous ruler: ​All rulers were called the Sapa Inca, but the actual name of the most famous
Sapa Inca was Atahualpa, who was killed by the Spanish.
■ Major Cities: ​Machu Picchu, Cuzco​ ​(Cuzco was their capital)
■ Animals used:​ Llamas, Alpacas, and
■ Known for: Engineering: ​roads, rope suspension bridges, buildings
■ They had no form of writing
■ They used a quipu to count (see page 34 of your packet)
■ People would do things “for the good of the empire” (see page 32)
■ “​He Who Sees Everything”​ (see page 32)
● He was a government official who worked directly for the Sapa Inca
● He took the village census
● He married the unmarried girls and boys of marriageable age
● He collected taxes
■ How their civilization collapsed:​ The Spanish conquistador ​Francisco Pizarro ​conquered the
Inca Empire. Their downfall was helped by the illnesses that the Spanish brought to the Inca
people. Descendants of the Inca are still alive today, and the language they spoke, Quechua, is
still used by millions of people.
