Quesnell Heights Neighbourhood Profile

QUESNELL HEIGHTS
NEIGHBOURHOOD DESCRIPTION
Quesnell Heights is located east of 149 Street and south of Whitemud Drive, along the North
Saskatchewan River. The neighbourhood has good access to the North Saskatchewan River
Valley, and Fort Edmonton Park is located across the river. Quesnell Heights is one of the
smallest residential neighbourhoods in Edmonton, and only contains approximately 120 homes.
Quesnell Height’s land use consists entirely of single-detached homes built in the 1960s and
1970s. Located in the centre of the neighbourhood is an open space recreation area. Additional
community facilities are located in the surrounding communities, such as Rio Terrace and Laurier
Heights. The West Edmonton, Meadowlark, and Southgate Shopping Malls also close.
The neighbourhood name was officially adopted in 1958, although it had been in use since at
least 1912. The origin of the neighbourhood name is not known definitively, but it may have been
named after Dr. Phillip Quesnell who was a well known physican who came to the city in 1912.
Another possible namesake is J.B Quesnell, who was a prominent local citizen in the late 1800s.
A third possibility is that the neighbourhood was named in honour of Jules Maurice Quesnel, a
famous French-Canadian clerk with the North West Company, after whom several prominent
landmarks in British Columbia are named.
