SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
Senioritis
By now, seniors all know the drill. The month of April brings with it the hope of sunshine and
warmth, a reprise from the harsh winter and bitter weather. Right around now, spring second
semester becomes a little more daunting, especially for seniors preparing to graduate in May.
The sunshine beckons, friends are ready to graduate and enter the “real world” and you just want
to be done. It becomes increasingly hard to focus on homework and studying. There’s one word
that keeps popping up, one probably mentioned by classmates, parents or friends.
Senioritis.
The word invokes synonyms such as “laziness” and “apathy.” It varies from person to person. It
can be as benign as losing focus or as serious as skipping classes. But there is still another
month left in classrooms, writing papers and taking tests. Having senioritis could lead to
consequences, such as failing a class and not being able to graduate on time. But it could also
have unintended consequences on those trying to apply for college and scholarships.
In addition, senioritis can be attributed to an increase in risk-taking behaviors. Seniors often
reward themselves for working hard during the week by playing hard on the weekend. While
fun weekend activities can motivate students to remain focused during the week, seniors need to
avoid the pitfalls of illegal behaviors. These behaviors could lead to losing scholarships, being
denied admission and incarceration.
With just a little over a month until graduation, seniors have to stay the course and power
through to get that diploma!
Senior Recognition Revamped
This year we are replacing the Senior Breakfast with the Senior Recognition and Capping
Ceremony. The Graduating Class of 2016 Senior Recognition and Capping Ceremony will be
held in the LHS gymnasium on Thursday, May 26th at 7:00pm (semi-formal attire is expected.)
Senior awards and honors graduates will be recognized and graduation cords and stoles will be
awarded during this event.
In addition, as a candidate for a Laramie High School diploma, students will receive their “cap”
as a mark both of significant academic achievement and of a lifelong commitment to the love of
learning. The mortar board, a vestige of the medieval scholar’s costume, is an important symbol
of academic life and accomplishment.
Students are asked to select a special person to join them as their “capper”. At the appropriate
time in the celebration, the “capper” will be called upon to place the mortar board upon their
head as a symbol of their academic accomplishment!
Invitations are being distributed to seniors on Monday, May 23rd. If you wish to participate in
the Capping Ceremony, please complete the RSVP portion of the invitation and return it to
Rhonda Guenther in the Principal’s Office no later than Friday, April 29, 2016.
