SCHOOL OF MEDICINE PROGRAM FOR GLOBAL HEALTH & DEVELOPMENT The United Nations Millennium Development Goals: Progress and Future Course type Elective module Volume 5 ECTS credits Objectives To familiarize the students with the UN Millennium Development Goals, their role in global social development, and MDG-related research carried out at the University of Tampere. To update the students’ knowledge on Global Development To increase the students’ ability to popularize science and to communicate messages about global social development Content Background, rationale, and the political process that led to the Millennium Declaration and the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) The contents of each MDG Current progress in achieving the goals Introduction to research projects related to the MDGs Overview of global development targets after the MDG period Modes of Study Lectures 10 h Expert commentaries 10 h Panel discussions and interview sessions 10 h Group work 45 h Individual study 60 h Total student investment time (SIT) 135 h This course will be organized around 10 learning sessions, held at weekly intervals. During the first of these sessions, there will be a general lecture on the MDGs, followed by a more specific lecture on the rationale, contents and progress in MDG 1. The students will then be split into groups of 8-10, each group containing students from several different educational programs. In the subsequent sessions, there will first be expert commentaries on how development towards the indicated MDG has been promoted to practical actions and research projects, followed by a general discussion where the students can interview the visiting development experts. Each session closes with an introductory lecture on the next MDG. The course will finish with a panel discussion on the role of the University of Tampere in global social development. Between the formal sessions, the students discuss the development goals in a virtual network, prepare questions for the visiting experts and Course description, GHD: Millenium Development Goals Page 2 of 5 communicate their core findings in a blog that will be published at the Unversity of Tampere webpage. Teachers from the Program for Global Health and Development and the School of Communication, Media and Theatre will mentor the students in the between-session activities. Students All Bachelor, Master and doctoral level students from all schools at UTA. TAMK students may also attend the 10 sessions, but their credits will be awarded by TAMK. Evaluation Lecture attendance (min 80%), preparation of questions for discussion with the researchers and external experts/, participation in electronic group discussions.
