ing.’’
Selena, who grew up in Tokoroa, was farewelled on Anzac Day
at a tangihanga service at
Ruapeka Marae off State Highway
5 in the Fitzgerald Glade.
Cars lined the length of three
rugby fields, Tepana said.
‘‘It was the most cars there I
have ever seen.’’
Those attending had taken
inspiration in the eulogy
delivered by her son Laza.
‘‘He gave a message that he
doesn’t want to feel any hate, and
of course some of our older
aunties and uncles are trying to
deal with that.’’
‘‘He said it has been the worst
time of his life, but at the same
time, the day of the burial was one
of the happiest times – to see so
many people pay tribute.’’
About 50 family gathered at the
three bedroom family home in
Tokoroa to mourn.
‘‘They stayed for about five
days. We all spent time looking
after one another, just talked and
laughed and cried. It’s been a real
tragedy.’’
Police were called to Ongaroto Marae, Kinleith, at 7am on April 20.
Investigations into death continue
On April 8 Nina had visited first
cousin Charlie Tepana at the family
home where she told family she
had broken up with her partner.
‘‘Our home was the last time we
spent time with her. We understand
she ended up going back to that
guy.’’
Tepana, who had attended Te
Hiko’s first appearance, said the
family ‘‘holding up okay’’.
‘‘It’s obviously not over yet and
we will have our time.’’
Despite the court process,
Detective Senior Sergeant Matt
Cranshaw of the Taupo Area CIB
said police were continuing work
on the case.
‘‘Our thoughts are with
Queenie’s family following her
tragic death and I can reassure the
community that we are rigorously
investigating the circumstances of
her death.’’

Family of a slain Bay of Plenty
woman say they don’t want to feel
any hate towards the wider family
of the man accused of her murder.
Queenie Selena Thompson, 41,

the Ongaroto Marae village near
Atiamuri on Wednesday, April 20.
Her former partner, Jamie Te
Hiko, has been charged with her
murder.
He

remanded in custody and will
reappear in the High Court at
Rotorua next week.
Police are continuing inquiries
into the death of the Queenie, who
was known as Selena or Nina, but
it was understood she died from
blunt force trauma.
Her body was found inside a
bedroom in a property off the forestry road to Mangakino after
police were alerted at 7am.
Two weeks after Selena’s
death, her first cousin Charlie
Tepana said the family were full
of mixed emotions.
‘‘We were brought up in a family where all of the wider whanau
were brought up as brothers and
sisters, we were all really close.’’
‘‘She was a kind-natured person, loved to laugh, loved to spend
time with people and family.’’
He said whanau were taking it
‘‘day by day’’.
‘‘We don’t want to feel any
hate, we want to love the beautiful
person she was and not confuse
that with any overwhelming
sense of anger, as there has been
at times.’’
The 41-year-old grandmother of
one leaves behind four children –
Laza, 25, Tara-Lise, 20, and six
year old twins Layla and Telia.
They would now grow up with no
mother, he said.
‘‘Sadly Tara-lise turned 20 the
day after we buried their mother.
She was a loving mother. She was
much loved by the community.’’
‘‘She had this infectious laugh,

It’s times like these that the true
meaning of a community shines
through - especially in a place like
Tokoroa.
There are a few families going
through exceptionally tough
times at the moment and it is
comforting to know that they will
get the support and guidance they
need from friends and whanau
back here in Tokoroa, even if they
did move on to different towns.
In other news, it is good to see
our pensioner housing unit still
on track to being built.
However it is a huge shame
that our young Waiariki students
will not be able to participate or
contribute to its construction.
It was a really neat concept,
and one that perhaps should be
mooted more often, to get our
young people involved in the
development of our town. Pehaps
it would increase their connection
and sense of responsibility to it, if
they knew they had played a role
in its establishment.

The man killed in a helicopter
crash near the Lindis Pass has
left behind a wife and five-weekold son.
Liam Edwards, 32, originally
from Tokoroa, was killed when
the helicopter he was in came
down in foggy conditions at
about 11am on Saturday.
The helicopter’s pilot, Murray Sarginson, 51, was flown to
Dunedin Hospital in a critical

His devastated wife, Jaimee
Edwards, said that the pair, who

Edwards grew up in Tokoroa

from Forest View High School.
An old friend from high
school, who did not wish to be

he drove and the time he
showed up at the school ball
driving a tractor.
Edwards left Tokoroa when

HomeStart scheme in the Waikato

There are 107 more first home
owners in South Waikato since
the start of the Government’s
HomeStart scheme, which
replaced the old KiwiSaver First
Home Deposit Subsidy a ayear
ago in April 2015.
Changes to the KiwiSaver
rules also means that people can
combine their HomeStart grant of
up to $10,000 per person or up to
$20,000 per couple towards a
deposit on a new home.
Under KiwiSaver, a couple
each earning $40,000 a year could
withdraw up to $29,000 after five
years for a house deposit.
It’s pleasing to note that the
HomeStart Scheme has helped
fund 87 new first homes purchases
with grants worth $479,000 in the
South Waikato region since last
year.
Having a deposit big enough to
buy a house has always been a big
challenge for most young people
wanting to own their own home.
Therefore, combining their
HomeStart grant with the
KiwiSaver incentive means a
sizeable deposit to buy a first
home has become a reality for
more people.
If you haven’t already done so,
now might be a good time to join
KiwiSaver.
Second chance home owners
will benefit too from the
Government’s latest tweaks to the
KiwiSaver withdrawal rules.
I also welcome the
government’s latest tweaks to
KiwiSaver income and asset caps,
which will help the scheme work
better for second-chance
homebuyers.

This means a second-chance

Pensioner project on track
FRANCES FERGUSON
A $950,000 pensioner housing project in
Tokoroa is still on track to start in May
despite a setback in builders.
The project, on a Kindergarten St corner reserve, was to be built by carpentry
students from Waiariki Institute of Technology, but that arrangement was cancelled when it became clear the number
of units would take to long to build.
Head of department for carpentry
John Kelly said it was a mutual decision
between Waiariki and the South Waikato
District Council.
He said the hours available for
students to work on the project did not fit
in with their timetable.
"As we got closer to the project it
became clear it wasn’t going to happen,"
he said
"Our students need to learn without
being under pressure."
Kelly said the best solution was to
back out of the project for the benefit of
the residents waiting to occupy the units.
Rumours circulating that the students
failed a drug test were incorrect, Kelly
said.
He said compulsory drug testing for
enrolments in the trade courses were
introduced this year.
JK Homes, a local contractor, will now
work with high school students from the
Gateway Programme to complete the
project.
Deputy Chief Executive Ben Smit said
the six units would take two years to
complete, rather than three to four as
originally planned.
"Council is very pleased that we are
still able to build the units using a council, business, community partnership,
utilising local labour and further developing and training our young people."
Kylie Kingi, of JK Holmes, said they
supported sourcing local labour and creating employment opportunities in the
South Waikato.
"It was an easy decision for us to put
in a quote for the project.
"We fully support ... providing young
people the opportunities to gain trade
skills. And we liked the idea of building
new... homes for our older people."
Construction is expected to start this
month.

INCREASE IN THE THEFT
Tokoroa Police responded to 73
incidents in the past week and
senior sergeant Jason Henderson
said burglary and theft remains a
concern. People are reminded to
secure their property. ‘‘A lot of
these crimes are opportunistic
with expensive items left in the
open for anyone to see.
Unfortunately if you leave your
property out like this then you
can expect it to be stolen.’’ He
said thieves are often lazy people
looking for the easy option. ‘‘The
answer here is to take
responsibility for your property
and secure it out of sight which
will result in the thief looking
elsewhere."
DRUGS
People are encouraged to contact
Police if they have any
information about drug activity in
the South Waikato. Senior
Sergeant Henderson said drugs
cause a significant amount of
social harm in all communities
across New Zealand and Tokoroa
is no different. ‘‘The impact is far
reaching with many users
committing other crimes, such as
burglary and theft to fund drug
habits.’’ Information can be

Fonterra hub will
connect to port
FRANCES FERGUSON
Work has started at reopening the
Putaruru Rail yard as part of
Fonterra’s multi-million dollar
expansion.
KiwiRail is working together
with Fonterra to support the
Lichfield upgrade.
Fonterra spokesperson Abby
Watson said the rail yard will be
used as a hub to connect the plant
with the Port of Tauranga.
‘‘Moving product to and from
Lichfield by rail will reduce the
number of truck movements
through Putaruru meaning less
overall impact on the town.’’
The upgrade means an additional
100,000 tonnes of dairy products per
year will be moved with little
environmental impact, she said.
KiwiRail spokesperson Simon
Kilroy said feedback was positive
when a community meeting was
held in March.
However a few concerns from
locals were raised about the impact
noise and traffic congestion would
have during shunting times.
Kilroy said plans are still being
finalised and timetables will be
linked to demand.
‘‘As a commercial entity we wish
to increase the amount of freight car-
ried by rail and thereby increase
revenue.’’
Use of the yard will bring an
additional train in and out of
Putaruru and plans are subject to
change based on Fonterra’s

It is intended there will be a maximum of four shunts per day running
between Putaruru and the Lichfield

‘‘For safety there will be
increased use of train horns and
warning bells at crossings but we
expect the noise impact to be minimal.

women can do anything Body Focus
FRANCES FERGUSON
A Tirau ploughwoman proved
she has the skill to compete with
the big boys after placing in the
national finals.
Angela Taylor came second
in the Conventional grass section at the 61st Ploughing Championships.
The North Island’s only
female competitor said she was
mentally prepared to take on the
challenge that was held in
Rongotea, a small town in
Manawatu .
‘‘That was the best placing
I’ve had at the finals and it’s a
personal best as well.’’
Taylor prepared four days
before the championships to get
her mentally in the zone.
Her daughter’s partner, who
races motorbikes, helped her set
out a plan to help work through
the nerves.
‘‘It really helped me. It’s a different, unusual sport you’d
come across and very challenging.’’
Taylor also placed fifth in the
stubble and fourth overall winner.
Winning silver is ‘‘one up’’
from the two bronze medals she
won in 2010 and 2012.
She completed the three hour
competition leaving eight

minutes on the clock.
Working in four sections,
competitors had to complete a
open split, the crown, bodywork
and finish within the allocated
time.
They ploughed through a 100
by 20metre plot and judges did
their markings through each
section.
Organised to encourage an
interest in the skill of ploughing
Taylor said she is the only
woman in the North Island competing in conventional ploughing.
She said it has been a very
interesting experience compet-
ing against men.
‘‘You do get the odd one or
two that get their nose put out of
joint.
‘‘They’ll help you for the first
year or two but when you start
beating them but on the whole
the men are very good and supportive.’’
Taylor took an interest in
2007 when her husband
encouraged her.
‘‘I use to go with him and
support and I thought why don’t
I start and do it myself.’’

Southern United remain on top
RUGBY
Southern United remain atop of
the Waikato Division One
competition after an absorbing
33-16 away victory over Te Rapa.
The visitors set the foundation
for the result in the opening 40
minutes before the home side
surged back into the contest in
the latter stages.
Surf kicked off the scoring
with loose forward Owen Pomare
crossing for a try in his return
to the side.
Fellow forward Dennis
Quensell rumbled through the
defence to extend Southern’s
advantage.
Te Rapa managed to climb
back with a pair of penalties
before the Tokoroa club
reclaimed the ascendancy with
two classy tries to winger Damian
John and fullback Sean McKain.
Down 26-6 after halftime, Te
Rapa showed their determination
and muscled their way over for
two tries.
Despite a scrappy final quarter
it was prop Jamin Pinkerton who
had the last day powering over
for the try.
Meanwhile the senior B’s
picked up a deserved 34-0
shutout result running in five
tries.
In the comingt weekend Surf
will be hosting its neighbours
Putaruru.

Forum on developing the

FRANCES FERGUSON
Like-minded people with a drive to
shape the district’s future leaders
were challenged, inspired and
entertained at a community forum.
Held at Amisfield Primary School
a ‘‘Teacher Only Day’’, had professionals,
community
leaders,
teachers and parents come together
to learn and share ideas.
Guest speakers included psychologist Nigel Latta and people interpreter and author Alison Mooney.
Principal Bex Kilgoursaid the
goal was to engage the wider community so they could be a part of the
learning environment.
‘‘I wanted to provide the oppor-

bringing the outside into our community.’’
Kilgour said the day’s learning
was about perspective and being
able to apply strengths to get the best
out of each other.
‘‘It’s about being able to apply
your strengths so that it complements those around you.’’
Specialising in identifying different personality types, Alison
Mooney shared information on how
parents and teachers could better
understand children.
Getting educators to think about
purpose and why they are training
children was at the core of Nigel

WITH AUTHOR AND NUTRITIONAL BIOCHEMIST DR LIBBY
Why do I feel
cold every day?
I always feel cold, particularly in
my extremities. A friend
recently suggested this might
have a nutritional basis, what
are your thoughts? Thanks, Roz
Hi Roz. Feeling cold all the
time, particularly in your
extremities, can be caused by
poor circulation, insufficient
dietary fat and micronutrient
deficiencies to name a few of the
more common causes. Let’s
explore a few below:
VITAMIN B12 DEFICIENCY
If you are deficient in vitamin
B12, you might experience
numbness in your extremities.
This sensation may feel like cold
or tingling. Vitamin B12
deficiency can lead to nerve
damage. Tiredness, muscle
weakness, loss of appetite,
constipation and weight loss often
accompany these symptoms. If
you are vegetarian, vegan, or
have problems with digestion it’s
best to consult your GP to have
this tested.
IRON DEFICIENCY
Difficulty maintaining body
temperature can be a symptom of
iron deficiency. Iron is critical for
your red blood cells to transport
oxygen throughout your body.
Low iron levels often produce
symptoms of fatigue, weakness
and susceptibility to the cold
because your cells are not getting
the oxygen they need to operate
effectively. Iron deficiency
anaemia is also incredibly
common. According to the World
Health Organisation (WHO), a
staggering 2 billion people in the
world, in both developing and
industrialised countries are irondeficient. Research suggests
between 20 and 30 per cent of
women of child-bearing age in
Australia and New Zealand are
iron-deficient.
IODINE DEFICIENCY
Iodine is the key to a healthy
thyroid and metabolism. It is best
known for being a part of thyroid

hormones, which are used in
every cell of our bodies to regulate
metabolism by controlling the
burning of fat for energy and body
temperature.
Everything I read is always
about weight loss, but I can’t
gain weight – how can I do so
safely? Thank you, Sam
Hi Sam. That’s a great
question! An inability to gain
weight can most definitely have a
genetic basis; it can also be due to
a highly stressful environment or
a tendency to anxiety and high
levels of adrenaline can result in
difficulty gaining weight.
For healthy weight gain it’s
important to increase energy
intake by increasing nutrient and
energy rich foods in the way you
eat each day. You need to supply
your body with all the essential
nutrients it needs for muscle
growth and maintenance.You
should be aiming to put on
healthy weight by increasing
muscle mass with a healthy
proportion of body fat.
To do this you need to increase
your daily food intake of protein
foods, healthy fats and slow
releasing complex carbohydrates.
Obviously it’s important to steer
away from heavily processed or
refined foods that are not nutrient
dense and tend to be higher in
sugar, salt and poor quality fats.
Protein is also essential for
growth and maintenance of
muscles; good sources include
oily fish, chicken, red meat, nuts
and seeds.
Increasing your intake of
complex carbohydrate foods such
starchy vegetables (potato,
kumara, pumpkin, corn) brown
rice and oats (if you digest them
well), may help assist healthy
weight gain, without disrupting
your blood sugar levels. Upping
wholefoods fats is also beneficial,
such as those found in avocado,
nuts, seeds, organic butter,
coconut, oily fish and grass-fed
meats. Also try including more
energy and nutrient rich snacks
in your daily diet such as
smoothies/bliss balls.
It’s also important to continue
to eat plenty of vegetables, as they
should be a major part of any diet.
It may also be worthwhile
considering conditions such as an
over active thyroid, as obviously
this can influence your ability to
gain weight.

SELF-SUPPORT PRACTICES
"Rural communities deserve more support"
We locals know that the stress of being engaged with all
that farming demands and requires, can sometimes seem
just too much to bear. Friends and neighbours, family and
staff can do their best for us, yet sometimes we need
more. Now might be the time to check out some other
ways to manage ourselves at work, in the home, and out
in the world. Gabrielle Daly-Fong, a local Putaruru person
(member of the New Zealand Association of Counsellors
since 2004, and in private practice for 18 years), is
available to offer Brief Evening meetings in a variety of
self-care practices that are either gentle, meaningful, and/
or fun, yet life-giving and stabilising.

an out of control fire.
The Authority wishes to thank rural land owners and the public for your co-operation in
obtaining fire permits and reporting smoke sightings during the fire season.
Report fires via the “111” emergency call system.
