



the West vs the East
Nick이 the West와 the East를 구분하여 설명.
 I see now that this has been a story of the
West, after all―Tom and Gatsby, Daisy and
Jordan and I, were all Westerners, and perhaps
we possessed some deficiency in common
which made us subtly unadaptable to Eastern
life.

Nick’s Moral Judgment
Nick이 적극적으로 Tom과 Daisy를 비난하면
서 도덕적 판단을 하고 있음.
 They were careless people, Tom and
Daisy―they smashed up things and creatures
and then retreated back into their money or
their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that
kept them together, and let other people clean
up the mess they had made ...

The New Continent
Nick이 Gatsby의 집 해변에서 느끼는 감정으로 Dutch
sailors가 처음 신대륙을 보면서 느꼈을 감정을 연상함.
 And as the moon rose higher the inessential houses
began to melt away until gradually I became aware of the
old island here that flowered once for Dutch sailors'
eyes―a fresh, green breast of the new world. Its vanished
trees, the trees that had made way for Gatsby's house,
had once pandered in whispers to the last and greatest of
all human dreams; for a transitory enchanted moment
man must have held his breath in the presence of this
continent, compelled into an aesthetic contemplation he
neither understood nor desired, face to face for the last
time in history with something commensurate to his
capacity to wonder.

Gatsby and the Green Light


Nick이 해변에서 느끼는 감정으로 Gatsby가
Daisy 집의 선착장에 있는 green light을 보면
서 느꼈을 경이로움과 그의 꿈에 대해 설명.
And as I sat there brooding on the old,
unknown world, I thought of Gatsby's wonder
when he first picked out the green light at the
end of Daisy's dock. He had come a long way
to this blue lawn, and his dream must have
seemed so close that he could hardly fail to
grasp it. He did not know that it was already
behind him, somewhere back in that vast
obscurity beyond the city, where the dark
fields of the republic rolled on under the night.
The Ending of the Novel
Nick이 Gatsby가 green light을 보고 믿었을
것을 연상하며 비록 그 꿈이 바로 이루어지
지 않는다고 하여도 희망을 잃지 않고 더욱
더 노력할 것을 말하며 마지막 문장에서 소
설 전체에 긍정적 해석을 할 수 있는 가능
성을 열어두고 있다.
Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgiastic
future that year by year recedes before us. It
eluded us then but that's no matter―tomorrow
we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther ...
And one fine morning―
So we beat on, boats against the current,
borne back ceaselessly into the past.

