Then what you need is a shot of Christmas spirit and Austinburg Baptist is here to help! On December 20th at 7 p.m. our Christmas program will feature four Christmas productions to add variety and spice to your holiday season! The night kicks off with “Christmas Touchdown” which is about some kids in Florida learning about Christmas through the game of football. It is a comedy with a little bit of romance mixed in and a lot of fun! The second play of the night is called “Christmas Soup” and it is a comedy that mixes concepts from the old movie “Duck Soup” starring the Marx brothers, an Animaniacs episode called “King Yakko” and the message of Christmas into an enjoyable blend that all will enjoy! Next up is “Just Another Christmas” written by Autumn Essigmann that takes a look at a small town church about to go through a life changing event during the Christmas season. Finally the night will end with “What Would You Do?” written by Edward White. This play takes a well known Christmas story and makes it so real that by the end you will ask yourself that question. Actors featured are Lauren Johnson, Noah Sammons, Brianna White, Autumn Essigmann, Bruce Passaretti, Richelle Good, Brody Johnson, Brian Allington, Ben White, Catherine Owen, Adrianna Essigmann, Joshua Blanchard, Joshua White, Leland Essigmann, Caleb Baldwin, Darrius Johnson, Jacob White, Kevin Passaretti, Chip Baldwin, Megan Allington, Edward White, Hayley Southard, Deb Johnson, Matthew Essigmann, Sam Baldwin, Evan Allington, Sophia Southard, Adam Hadley, and Lyzz Blanchard. HOURS: Monday 9am-4pm Thursday 9am-3pm (Continued from last week.) Among the many ways of celebrating and enlivening the Holiday Season -- Christmas Pageants, Eggnog parties, roasting chestnuts, singing carols -- the reading and retelling of stories and poetry is one of the most time-- honored and dearly loved activities. It is particularly appropriate to read aloud, to share the warmth and joy generated by the many delightful works associated with Yuletide and to bring the family circle closer in the sharing. The time of Christmas is the most nostalgic of all festive days, and its age old joy is truly reflected in the literature of the Holiday. The theme with its many meanings has been an inspiration to Poets, Humorists and Novelists for centuries. The body of material is vast and fills volumes. The task of an editor is to select those works that are particularly poignant, meaningful and timeless. No Christmas collection would be complete without Dickens and included, “A Christmas Carol” and “Christmas at Dingley Dell.” Hans Christian Anderson’s touching story of the Little Marchgirl as well as O. Henery’s Gift of the Magi have been family favorites for generations. Even Laura Ingalls Wilder’s “Mr. Edwards meets Santa Claus” makes one feel rather quite merry and the inestimable Ogden Nash’s “The boy who laughed at Santa Claus. Van Wyck Mason’s moving and patriotic retelling of that First Christmas at Valley Forge with Washington appears as well as The Witty Effervescense of Saki. Even Sherlock Holmes was not untouched by the Christmas Spirit, and a little-known adventure of his demonstrates when read. Dame Agatha Christie’s lovely short story and poems by Robert Frost and T.S. Eliot are included in the Holiday Season. If you have never curled up in an overstuffed chair in front of a crackling fire, with the scent of a fresh-cut fir in the air and read stories of the Genial Season by the soft glow of the luminous tree, you’re in for a special treat. And if you have read some of these before you’ll be enchanted by the nostalgic journey that is one of the special delights of the Season. All of the works have been carefully mentioned truly to reflect the Spirit and meaning of that most special time of the year for all of us -- Christmas. So if you are frightened by a sudden figure that just came down the chimney with a bound, that’s no Ghost, it’s Santa. The Gift of God Christmas is a celebration of God’s great gift to humanity: The gift of God Himself, coming to us in human form as a servant under the humblest circumstances. We do well to recall just how lowly were the circumstances surrounding Jesus’ birth. Mary was a young woman-probably no more than 15 or 16 years old, engaged to be married when she found herself “with child”. Upon discovering this, her fiance Joseph resolved to break off the engagement. But following the counsel of a heavenly messenger, Joseph remained with her. Then, at the time of the child’s birth, the couple had to travel to Bethlehem to comply with the census. With no room at the inn, Mary was forced to give birth in the open fields, and the baby was laid in a manger, which is a feeding trough for livestock. In short, God emptied Himself of His divinity and became a helpless baby who was born being exposed to the elements, utterly dependent upon the care of his destitute mother and father. There is a great lesson to be learned here, but it is one that is too easily forgotten. God did not come to teach us how to be gods, or great kings and queens puffed up with pride and surrounded by luxuries and servants. He came to teach us to be humble servants who would love and help each other, even under the worst circumstances. Behold a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a son...K.J.V.
