Sanatan Dharma - also known as Hinduism - is the set of traditions and beliefs that originated on
the Indian subcontinent over thousands of years ago. It has no single founder and accommodates
a variety of complex views. Sanatan Dharma's body of scriptures spans theology, philosophy and
mythology, all of which are designed to provide insight into practising Dharma. Amongst these
scriptures, the four Vedas and numerous Upanishads are considered to be of foremost authority
and significance. Puranas, Ramayan and Mahabharat are the other major scriptures. Within the
Mahabharat is a treatise called Bhagvad Gita, often called the essence of all spiritual knowledge
of the Vedas.
Thousands of years old, no single founder and practices as diverse as flora in a forest. Yet, all
adherents of Sanatan Dharma believe in the existence of Parmaatma (the omnipresent Supreme
Being), karma and reincarnation.
Etymology
"Sanatan" is the Sanskrit word for "eternal".
"Dharma" is the Sanskrit word for "way of life".
Viewing Sanatan Dharma from this perspective, one should be reluctant in calling it a religion.
Owing to the importance of the Vedas, it is also often called "Vaidik Dharma".
Sanatan Mandir Cultural Centre encourages you to explore Sanatan Dharma through an
understanding of the basic tenets and key scriptures.
