Dr. Sue Henshon
College of Arts & Sciences
Language and Literature
General Objective
The objective is to give students the
opportunity to work in small groups to
develop a commercial that could
realistically be showcased in the Super
Bowl.
Instructions
First give students an introduction to
Super Bowl commercials. Then show
students a few notable commercials.
Finally, give students the time to
develop their own commercials.
Evidence of Success
Students have enjoyed working on this
activity for several years, and they
have developed simple and more
elaborate commercials. One year a
group of students filmed their
commercial, which was a big hit.
Description
Resources/Materials
Students will look at notable Super Bowl
commercials before developing their
own advertisement. Students will attain
a sense of how to develop a commercial
that is interesting, compelling, and
memorable. They will also develop an
understanding of how Super Bowl
commercials have evolved and changed
over the years. Students will work in
small groups to develop a commercial
that could realistically be shown at the
Super Bowl. Students will share their
ideas with the entire class.
Students will need access to the
internet, so they can study Super Bowl
commercials. The instructor will begin
with an overview of Super Bowl
commercials and their importance as
cultural commodities. Students can
develop their commercials as simple
entities (drawings) or as something
more elaborate (Power Point or even a
film) depending upon time constraints
and how the instructor presents this
assignment.
