Volume II, Issue 3 June 2015 The Lunar New Year by Iris New Year unit was really nice. My favorite subject was the Lunar New Year. We learned the zodiac calendar. I am the year of the rooster. Kaitlin from the North Room’s mother came in and told us about praying in Chinese and she brought us candies. We went to a restaurant, it was lovely. We put on plays, and I was in the first play. They made a dragon and we went in it. The Lunar Thematic Studies by Sophie E.R. My favorite part of the year was the Earth Day fair and Halloween day, and I thought the Lunar New Year project was pretty fun too. And I almost forgot about the sheep unit at the end of the year! My favorite part of the sheep unit was going to the sheep farm. We got to see really cute baby lambs. The Study of Rocks by Phin P. My favorite study this year was ROCKS! I learned that rocks are made out of molecules and minerals. I also learned that there are three types of rocks, Metamorphic, sedimentary, and igneous. I will never forget writing every category of rock in my journal. I loved this unit because I really like studying geology. Ever since I was really little, I have wanted to be a paleontologist. Rattlesnake Ridge by Max B. One of my favorite units this year was our mountain study. My favorite part of the mountain unit was our hike to Rattlesnake Ledge. It took an hour and a half to get to the top. I was so excited when I got to the top. We had a great view from the top. It only took an hour to get down. From the top I could see the river and the rest of the mountains. We ate lunch at the top. At the beginning of the hike we had cinnamon rolls that George’s family brought. Op-Ed ENDANGERED ANIMALS by Lola In this world some animals are safe, some animals are endangered. Some people wonder-”Why sit around while their species die down?” Here’s a list of 3 endangered animals that I know about: 1# The Red Wolf These graceful wolves are being chased down by hunters for their fur coats. Who would ever do such a thing? 2# The Polar Bear This snow-bound animal is in trouble. 2 words: Global Warming. And 3# The Lion Everybody knows that this animal is in serious trouble. Trees are disappearing from Africa! We need as much help as we can get to save all these animals. What can you do to save them? Sacred Places Study by Emmett The Ring of Fire by Thomas I really liked when we blew up the fake mountains. The first time it didn't work but it worked every other time. I really liked when we went to Rattlesnake Ledge. It was awesome!! My most memorable thing about this year was religious studies when we split up into groups. I was in the Buddhist group, and it was really fun. We got to type on the computer, which was my first experience typing! I remember going to a Buddhist temple it was cool, because of how sacred and old it looked. My group made a diagram about Buddhism, and we shared it in front of my class and the north room. We also wrote stories about Buddhism. I really liked it. I think I would like to do it again, but a different religion next time. I have had a good time at Lake and Park but I am moving on to a different school, I really enjoyed this school and I would like to come back some time and visit. The Rattlesnake Hike by Griffin My favorite field trip this year was the Rattlesnake hike. We got to go really high in the mountains and be free for a day. Something that I will remember was Eli W. found a rusty door hinge from Moncton. Moncton was a city that flooded in 1915. It flooded because the dam created a glacial moraine under the ground. So, the city flooded. I will always remember reaching the top of the mountain and breathing a sigh of relief that I finally made it to the top! The Earth Day Fair by Katie During Earth Day we had a huge party at school. We had an oil experiment and a bean bag toss. At the bean bag toss I won 3 animal toys. I also got to make a bird feeder, then I planted baby bok choy. Then when I went home I hung up my bird feeder and it was REALLY FUN!!!! . Learning About Coding by George My favorite level was the angry birds one because it is easy. To begin for yourself, you can go on code.org! I liked coding because my dad works at Microsoft. I feel when I’m coding like someday I could work at Microsoft. I like watching my dad do real coding. This unit was my favorite part of the year, because moving the blocks was easy for me to understand. Lunar New Year by Nadia My favorite study was Lunar New Year. I liked our field trip to the International District, and when we made Chinese lanterns, and when we learned about the animals of the zodiac Year of the Sheep Fiction The Two Hiker's Journey by Gavin Once upon a time there where two people who wanted to climb Mt. Rainier. Their names were Jim and James. Jim and James looked out their window and saw Mt. Rainier. They packed their bags and set off for their long journey. Then they started to hike up the mountain. At 8:00 they were half way up the mountain. Finally they found a camp they went inside and went to bed. 1 The next morning they ate breakfast and they packed up started to hike up again. Two hours later at 10:36 they were three quarters up Mt Rainier. They were very happy and talked about their feelings. He gave most of his money to all the poor people in town. They thanked him so much for all that money. So he went back home and made one more beautiful rug for himself. Five in a half hours later at 3:06 they found one more camp. They had not eaten lunch yet so they had some. Once they had finished their lunch they talked about what they had. Jim had a burger and James had a slice cheese pizza. When the rug was finished he hung it up. It was beautiful. Fortunately, the Nice Zombie Sheep by Ardin At dinner they were so full that they skipped it. Then they had fell asleep for a very long time. The hours ticked by and they were still fast asleep. I am a boy named Ardin. I have long hair. The color of my eyes are all different types. I like traveling. I’m going to travel to a farm. The next morning they were hiking up Mt Rainier again. They reached the top at 10:43 pm. They were very happy and went back down I got to the farm by night. I went straight to bed.(while far elsewhere something was hungry.) The next day I went for a little walk, well not a little one. I went back to the farm and then I went to the sheep. They were nice zombie sheep. Two days later they were at the bottom of the mountain when the mountain started to erupt. First they didn't realize it then they got so frightened that they ran as fast as they could go until they got to their house. They were so tired they went and took a nap at 4:31 pm. They napped so long until 8:56 am they woke up and made their breakfast and got their drink and started to eat their breakfast, it took them about 12 minutes to eat. That night I woke up. I went outside and far away. I saw a terrible thing with eight legs. I woke the sheep up. By the time I got them up the thing was so close. There was a manhole. Quickly we jumped down the manhole. We landed in a canon and got shot back up. We flew into the spider’s mouth, it was mad. Then we effected the spider. The spider exploded. The time they had finish was at 9:12. They were very bored so they watched television. They watched until 10:11. This time they wanted to go outside and look at nature. They were out until 11:45 so they ran inside and prepared lunch. At 12:00 it was ready. They were ready to eat their lunch. At 12:21 they finished. They wanted to draw. This time they drew a chair, a bird, an apple, a clock, a table, a window, and a five story house. When they finished all the drawing they had done it was 5:43. It was time for dinner. They made their dinner and they ate their dinner. When they finished eating it was 6:00. They got on their PJs and went to bed. The next morning they woke up so early. They woke up at 5:00. They tried to go back to sleep but they couldn't go to bed so they got on the couch and watched their favorite cooking show on television. they watched until 6;30. So they got up and made their breakfast. They both had a bagel with a fried egg in the middle. They had two servings of it and when they finished at 7:23 they were so stuffed that they couldn't have one more bite full. So they took a nap... the minutes ticked by and hours passed...but they were still asleep. When they awoke it was 3:45 they were surprised how long they had been sleeping for. They awoke after noon and where starving. So... they made lunch. After they finished they checked to see how long it took them. James took 38 minutes long. And Jim took 23 minutes long. They normally do the same things every day. They look at their list of things to do every day so they can remember what they do. And this is what they normally do each day. Wake Up Go Downstairs Make Breakfast Eat Breakfast Brush Teeth Take Nap Wake Up Make Lunch Eat Lunch Watch Television Take Nap Wake Up Make Dinner Eat Dinner Take Shower Brush Teeth Get In Pajamas Go To Bed Julian with his study group in front of the Vendanta Society, Seattle. Religious Studies by Julian What I will remember was Religious Studies. I loved how the Big Room and the North Room combined into seven groups. I, for instance, was in the Hinduism group. All the groups went on a field trip according to each group. In my opinion, you can’t beat that unit. –Julian Lunar New Year by Olivia I really liked doing Lunar New Year we went to a fancy restaurant. I forgot the name but I will never forget the foods! My friends and I got our picture on a metal camel structure in a park. Part of learning about Lunar New Year was the zodiac signs. I learned that I was the year of the pig. Everything about Lunar New Year was fun! Robin Hood: Literature Groups and a play at Seattle Children’s Theatre by Lise & Sofia B. This year we learned about Robin Hood, he is a very good person to the poor. If you are rich in the olden times you probably don’t like him. Robin Hood is his nickname his real name is Robert Fitz William. He used to be a count but the sheriff robbed him to nothing and now his hideout is in Sherwood Forest. After we read the book we saw a play. It was my favorite unit!!! -Lise Robin stole from the rich and gave to the poor. He lived in Nottingham, England. His hideout was in Sherwood Forest. He was the best archer in the village. The real question is, is he good or bad? Think about it, he stole from the rich and gave to the poor. Sofia Beginning Room Students Remember the School Year When we sat down together during the second to the last week of school, we came up with this list of things we remembered doing during this 2014-2015 school year: The next morning they did exactly what their list said. First they woke up, went downstairs, made their breakfast, ate their breakfast, and brushed their teeth. Took their nap, woke up made their lunch. Ate their lunch watched television. Took their nap. Woke up, made dinner, ate their dinner, took their shower, and brushed their teeth. Got into their pajamas and then last of all went to bed. The next morning they wanted to do something different today so first they changed their list. So they made their breakfast ate their breakfast and watched television at the same time. After that they wanted to read so they did. At 11:51 they started to make lunch. They wanted to see how long it would take to make lunch. When they were finished they told each other their time. James's time was 30 minutes and Jim's time was 35 minutes long. Singing songs--Walk, Shepherd, Walk. Freeze Tag. Gun Tag. Gus I remember shearing sheep--Caleb Playing "Charlie Over the Ocean"--Leah and Caleb Learning about salmon--Caleb The Space and Air Museum--Leah The Rug Story by Jordi The Sheep Farm, the Alpaca Farm--Leah Once upon a time in an old old sheep farm that was surrounded by flowers an old man with 6 little black and brown sheep lived. One day he sheered two of his sheep. He used that wool to make yarn and that yarn to make a rug and so he did. He made more rugs and sold them at the market. I remember reading books: George's Secret Key to the Universe by Stephen and Lucy Hawking--Sofia He got a lot of money from it. But then he ran out of rugs to sell and sheep with wool. He went back to his home and counted his sparkling gold. He had a lot of shiny money. He counted again and again to make sure that he had a lot of money. ("My mom has the book of Stephen Hawking." River) I remember learning about the North Star and the reading the story, "The Seven Brothers". The Monkey King play. Going to the Chinese restaurant. I used up a whole bottle of sauce.-Gus 2 Petting a baby lamb. Learning about Monkey King.--William I remember the art studio.--Boden Chapter Books We All Remember: Twig, The Railway of the Forest, Charlotte's Web, The Little Prince Afternoon Groups: the garden, planting the seeds, weeding with Eileen; me and Rhea and Lola and Zoe played detectives. Tillie When I first visited, Andy was downstairs.--Oliver I remember singing "The Earth Turns Round". -- Boden I remember when I first met Rhea (She was the first person I met.) --River cat and that is why they are sworn enemies. Also we read a book by Grace Lin called Where the Mountain Meets the Moon, it is about a girl named Minli, and she lives in a very poor village. And after dinner her father tells her stories, so one day she goes looking for the Old Man of the Moon from one of her father's stories. Along the way she meets lots of friends even a dragon! which is her best friend for her journey. Those were my favorite things to do this year When we learned about the sun being a star..--Boden MY TIME AT LAKE AND PARK SCHOOL THIS YEAR!!! Learning about firetrucks--Teague (This was the first unit we did in 2013-2014.) By Roham I’ve been at Lake and Park School for three years and in those three long years I’ve had some great times. This year went to many places. Once we went to a cathedral and it was amazing for all of us, well, most of us liked it there. I for one loved it there but the cathedral did get boring after an hour or so. We have this thing called lit groups it’s where we split up into groups, and we read a book and each group reads a different book my favorite was The Old Man and the Moon. We have read-alouds, my favorite the Tripods books. The Tripods were kind of cool. Our play Typo was fun. I loved the part where we were voting on different names. My name won! I got to play the role of Jack. Jack was afraid of heights. It wasn’t very smart of him if he was afraid of heights to climb the beanstalk. I like the place where we play Capture the Flag a.k.a CTF. I like the terrain. It’s very hilly, and there are trees and bushes and bamboo and a creek. These are good places to hide. We go outside A LOT which I LOVE. Our school is awesome. Doing the bean bag toss at Earth Day.--Rowan What we all remember from Earth Day: making bird feeders, picking up garbage, bean bags. Field Trip to Churches and Synagogues and Cathedrals: *visiting this church *Temple de Hirsch Some things our dramatic play space turned into this year: art studio, Goodnight, Moon Room, spaceship, dress up area, crow's nest, kitchen, market. When we had a Chinese kitchen in the classroom.—Everybody Things We Remember Doing On Our Own (Not suggested by a teacher) : making our own plays, making a play of Rumpelstiltskin, making a play of Robin Hood, the dance: The Indian Princess Chief and Her Cat and Baby Rikki-Tikki-Tavi by August I remember reading the story Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. We read the story because we were going to go and see the play at the Seattle children’s Theatre. One of the characters in the story is a mongoose. I studied mongooses. I learned that mongooses eat snakes like the King Cobra. I like going to plays. When the lights go down it gets really super quiet and then the story begins. It was very fun seeing the play Rikki-Tikki-Tavi. The End of this Year by Delphine This year has been amazing ☺ but all good things must come to an end☹ I have learned a lot over the past few months and I hope I remember it all.㋛ When I look back to this year I know that my favorite part of the year was when we worked on the play Typo. Being Sleeping Beauty was really fun and my favorite line was “To rescue me. Sweet. What makes you think I was in trouble? Just because I’m a female? Why does that make me less capable of getting myself out of any problems that I may have gotten into? How did you know I wasn't just napping?” It's really fun to say. Another of my favorite things was capture the flag, it's so fun. When I move on to another school I will miss Lake and Park☹ but I will always remember my time here. Reflections by Kaitlin Lake and Park is an amazing school full of kind people and teachers. Looking through all of my notebooks and journals I see what I have accomplished and what needs work. At the beginning of the school year we made journals. In it, the first writing assignments are hopes and dreams for the school year, mine where to get better at my 6 7 and 8 multiplication facts and to spell better. Now I know all of my 6 7 and 8 multiplication facts and can spell a little bit better. Our school goes on amazing field trips, like on the Lunar New Year we went to a Chinese restaurant, we went to NOAA, the Museum of Flight, St. James Cathedral, llama, sheep, and alpaca farms, the Pacific Science Center, the Burke Museum, Rattlesnake Ridge and so much more. This year summer has come quicker than most, and I will be sad to leave this wonderful school and all these wonderful people but I will be back to explore this experience! China by: Harriet The China study was a lot of fun for me. Because we got to watch Wild China, which is about different animals all over China in all different climates like the Pandas, in the bamboo forests or a certain snow monkey that lives in the mountains. All of the animals are interesting because of all the different climates and the certain animals that live in those certain places in China. Also I enjoyed making crafts like Fans and paper Dragons. Also on the Lunar New Year we went to a Chinese restaurant, and got about three courses. And the food was really really really good. And we learned about the Chinese zodiac’s, about how rat betrayed My First Year at Lake and Park School by Rees My name is Rees. This year is my first, at the Lake and Park school. I feel like I can learn more. Here I learned how to divide and measure, multiply more numbers, more addition, and more subtraction. I remember the first unit. World Religion. It was fun to study Islam. When we were studying Islam, my grandma was in Turkey, and brought back a picture of a blue mosque. Learning what Muslims believe was also fun. I remember the first Capture The Flag game. We made up rules, and I remember actually going out into the hilly landscape past the tennis courts. Back there is sort of a swampy area with lots of places to hide. The other area is hilly and doesn’t have very many places to hide, but if you hide the flag way up at the top it can tire people out if they don’t use the path. I remember writing Christmas poems also. It was fun getting to write them about the snow and Santa Claus. And around that time we saw A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens. I remember how scary it was. The part that was super scary was the part where Scrooge came home and found a ghost. I remember how scary it was when he came through the bed. His costume was scary. I remember feeling that my life had just ended. I also remember water testing which was also fun, getting to test Lake Washington and Mt Baker Creek, which is in our Capture The Flag area. I remember the water temperature at 57 and the air temperature at 54 which seemed really weird. I remember starting the weaving unit and going to see the alpacas on Vashon Island. I remember feeding one of the boy alpacas pellets on a leaf. I also loved both plays we did this year, Typo and The Phantom Tollbooth. In Tollbooth, I remember having to memorize the most lines and how nervous I was. It was the best play I’ve ever done. I was the main character, Milo. Being Milo made me a little nervous because I was on stage the entire play except for The Spelling Bee’s monologue. In Typo I remember being a stagehand with Dutch and moving the scene for the witches hut. It was only one scene but it was fun. It’s been a great year and I look forward to next year. 3 Jonah Luke My three years at Lake and Park school were really fun. I learned a lot about our unit studies, my favorite unit was Greek mythology because it was interesting. I remember making up stories about fake gods and goddesses. It was exciting because we got to use our imagination. I’ll remember studying Greek mythology. I’ve been at Lake and Park for three years. I was looking back at my journal the other day remembering all the stuff I wrote, all the friends I made, all the things we studied. It’s amazing to think that all the stuff we did happened over three years! It seems like just yesterday that I walked into a classroom for the first time, just yesterday that we studied the human body, just yesterday that we went to the Burke Museum, just yesterday that we had our first Capture the Flag game. I remember one day as I was walking in to school there was a parent walking beside me. As we walked in, she said, “Wow it’s like Magic Land in here!” And it was. There were Christmas lights and paper birds hanging from the ceiling and the entrance had a hanging castle suspended from the ceiling. It was amazing to see all these things hanging. I will be really sad to leave this school and move on. I’m sure my next school will be almost as fun as this one. I will miss all my friends and I hope they go to good schools too. My favorite thing about Lake and Park is doing plays. I still have my script from Typo. I remember practicing and performing it. For every one that will be here next year I recommend you do a play, I really hope you have a good summer and I’ll miss you all. Some of my favorite parts of the year were when we did our plays. Our first play was Typo. In Typo I played the Wolf. The Wolf always carried around maps and never knew where he was. He wasn’t sure if he was here or there. And he didn’t know whether he was supposed to be doing something, or nothing. In the Phantom Tollbooth I played a Minister and a Lethargarain. There were five ministers. Each would say things in turn, one after another. A Lethargarian is a lazy, lethargic person who lives in the Doldrums. None of these characters are like me at all, but they were fun to play. I’ve been here for just 2 short years, but the 2 best years of my life. I wouldn't trade them for anything. I have so many wonderful memories that I will remember my whole life. Lake and Park is a wonderful community. It’s a comforting, loving, learning community. The teachers and students are wonderful unique people. My favorite part about Lake and Park school is all the experiences I have had. My favorite experience at Lake and Park was releasing the salmon. I loved learning about them and their environment, taking care of them, watching them grow and best of all releasing them with Franklin This school has been most of my life. I've been here since kindergarten. My first play was in kindergarten, I was a cardboard police car. I remember being nervous and I’m still nervous but now the roles get harder and I enjoy them more. I think that all the kids that come after me should go to Winterim. You get to play in the snow for hours and you get the best hot chocolate and pancakes. I had never skied before and it was super easy to learn. It was fun to learn to ski and slide in the snow I’ve always had fun with the school staff. They’re fun, and good at their jobs. I’ll always remember them. I’ve had fun these last few years at Lake and Park, it’s probably the best school I’ve ever been to and probably the best school I’ll ever go to. I will miss all the nice teachers and students. And I’m sure I will never forget this school for the rest of my life. When I was in summer camp we always would go to the beach and play in the sand and swim, sadly it was only up our waist. We also got to play on phones and tablets for an hour to a half hour and then we would play with Legos and marbles and go outside and play on the patio. My favorite game was where we all would have a bunch of balls on the patio and we would try to get them all onto the other side. People say seven is a lucky number and that’s how long I’ve been here. I feel lucky to have been at Lake and Park for seven years. But 1 is my lucky number. Walker It’s been such a long journey but also such a short one. It’s been a long one because I’ve been here for four years and I really love this school, so here goes my speech. Memories are a beautiful thing. They bring love, and fun, and friends. My first memory was meeting my first best friend, Mac, at Lake and Park School. I remember meeting Sonia, who is still my friend. One of the things I will never forget is meeting Grant and Quynh. Some of my favorite things I did at school was releasing the salmon. The plays we did made me happy. Meeting new friends, I was really happy about that. And also I liked going on the Light Rail with Lake and Park to go on field trips. I like this about Lake and Park, going on field trips. My favorite study was studying dinosaur bones with Kim. That was so fun! Kim brought us a bunch of bones to identify and write about them. What I learned was that bones are actually pretty cool. I first thought bones were a scary thing, now I think of them as cool things. My advice to this whole school and the new kids coming is that there is a bunch of love in this school. When I think of leaving I am sad, excited, and nervous. Why I’m sad is because I’m leaving a group of wonderful kids and grownups. I’m excited and nervous at the same time because I’m moving on to another wonderful school and it probably has a bunch of wonderful teachers and kids, too. I’m nervous because it’s a new community for me. Memories are beautiful when you really dig into them. I will feel love, friends, and being outside at recess when I look back at my 4 years at Lake and Park. I want to thank this whole organization for letting me be a part of this beautiful community. I will miss you guys. And the chain of family and friends never ends. Beautiful memories, beautiful memories. Anna hope. I really love how we go deep into the units we study. For example when we studied the nutcracker we saw the play, read the book, watched the movie and had a feast. I remember my first day. I was so shy. I didn’t know anyone or anything about the school. After a couple days I realized there was nothing to be afraid of. Everyone was welcoming sweet and kind, including the teachers. My favorite thing I did at Lake and Park is when we participated in the National Geographic Engineering Challenge. Jonah, Tate and I worked on it together. The challenge we choose was: Create one watt of energy without using a battery or a power outlet. There were 5 student winners out of about 150 schools. My group was one of them. We created a potato clock belt. We got to go live on YouTube and lots of people were watching. It was a great thing to experience that I will remember all my life. One thing I will always remember are the plays we did. The Phantom Tollbooth and Typo. All the collaboration we had to have to get it together. We put in so much work for a great turnout. It was so fun. All the nervousness and excitement everyone had. Lake and Park has taught me so much. To love, help, and appreciate what you have. Lake and Park is such a great community. I am so glad I had the chance to be a part of it. Andersen I have been going to this school for 2 and a ½ years. Here are some highlights: At L&P I did two plays, Typo and The Phantom Tollbooth. I really liked doing lighting for Typo and I liked doing the acting in Tollbooth. Tollbooth didn’t have as much joking around. I wish that it had more funniness. Rattlesnake Lake. The hiking was extremely fun. The view at lunch time was great we were 1.6 miles high the view was spectacular. A Christmas Carol play was really good. I’ll go to ACT theater again. It was very cool when Marley’s Ghost came out of the bed. It was quite a hilarious play. This school has a lot less worksheets. That’s a good thing because when I had those worksheets at my other school, we didn’t have time for fun. School is about work but it’s also about fun. Joking around is important. If you don’t enjoy school, you don’t want to be there. If you don’t want to be there, then you won’t be as productive or focus as well. I have quite a few friends here. Most of them I’ll be able to still see when I’m in Middle School. I’ll miss my friends and my teachers, they were nice. I hope my new school is fantastic. 4
