Sounds weird...but it’s actually brilliant. Domino’s has a free Pizza Tracker on its website and app that shows what’s going on with your pizza. (Your pizza is being made, your pizza is in the oven, your pizza is out for delivery, etc.) “Why don’t we have the same transparency for people in crisis?” wondered Dr. Lindsay Martin, Supervisor at Crisis Text Line, the free, 24/7 hotline for people of all ages. People text Crisis Text Line with a variety of issues including eating disorders, drug addiction, depression, and self harm. In approximately 1% of conversations, the person is in imminent risk for suicide or homicide and the organization triggers an “active rescue” by calling 911. “When you’re supporting someone at imminent risk of suicide, those minutes waiting to find out if help was dispatched are brutal. So I thought, if pizza delivery can be this transparent, an active rescue should be too!” said Dr. Martin. So, Crisis Text Line built a pizza tracker. Now, thousands of Crisis Counselors will be able to see when their texter is being located, emergency services are on their way, emergency services have made contact with the person in crisis, etc. "In situations where seconds count, people in danger should get help as fast as it can get there,” said Brian Fontes, CEO of the National Emergency Number Association. “We are excited to be working with Crisis Text Line to improve interactions between Crisis Counselors and 9-1-1 professionals. NENA is always glad to see technological advances that better serve the public; innovations like Pizza Tracker will foster improved collaboration and help all parties involved produce better lifesaving outcomes.” “This is an example of smart technology being applied to real social problems,” said Baylee Greenberg, COO of Crisis Text Line. “And, we’re hoping to open this product up to other mental health organizations, hotlines, and schools later this year so they can use it too.” Crisis Text Line serves anyone, in any type of crisis, providing access to free, 24/7 support and information via the medium people already use and trust: text. www.crisistextline.org The National Emergency Numbers Association (NENA): The 9-1-1 Association improves 9-1-1 through research, standards development, training, education, outreach, and advocacy.
