Standards of Learning/ Standards CE.9 The student will demonstrate knowledge of how public policy is made at the local, state, and national levels of government by a) examining the impact of the media on public opinion and public policy; b) describing how individuals and interest groups influence public policy; c) describing the impact of international issues and events on local decision making. Essential Understandings/ Big Ideas Students will be able to answer the following questions: What influence do the media have on public policy and policymakers? How do individuals and interest groups influence policymakers? Which international issues and events would require local government officials to act? Key Essential Skills and Knowledge Essential Knowledge: Ways the media play an important role in setting the public agenda Focusing public attention on selected issues Offering a forum in which opposing viewpoints are communicated Holding government officials accountable to the public Civics and Economics Page | 1 Government officials use the media to communicate with the public. (CE.1a) Analyze political cartoons, political advertisements, pictures, and other graphic media. (CE.1c) Review information for accuracy, separating fact from opinion. (CE.1e) Identify a problem, weigh the expected costs and benefits and possible consequences of proposed solutions, and recommend solutions, using a decision-making model. Students will complete activity in interactive notebooks in which they create a propaganda cartoon.
