Class Notes on Solve and Graphing Inequalities with
a variable.
•The GOLDEN RULE of Inequalities:
• Whenever you MULTIPLY or DIVIDE both
sides of an inequality by a NEGATIVE
NUMBER, you MUST FLIP the inequality
symbol.
Symbols for Open and Closed Inequalities
•Symbols for an open circle
[≠ < > ]
•Symbols for a closed circle
[≤ ≥ = ]
Steps to Solve and graph Inequalities
1)Get the variable by itself on one side of the
inequality symbol.
2)Check the order! (Variable symbol constant)
3)Circle the number on the number line.
4)Open Circle or Closed circle?
5)Shade appropriately
Example: Solve and Graph
5 - 3x ≤ 13 + x
-x
-x
x ≥ -2
5 - 4x ≤ 13
-5
-5
- 4x ≤ 8
