In Christ, Bobby Braswell, Jr. 5 Middle Baptist Association Annual Meeting September 26, 2010 The 169th annual meeting of the Middle Baptist Association met in the First Baptist Church, Sylvania, on September 26, 2010 at 6:00 P.M. Mrs. Roselyn Matheson and Mrs. Jan Austin, First Baptist Church musicians, played a piano duet as the prelude. Rev. Jimmy Allen, moderator, called the Annual Session to order. Rev. Bobby Braswell brought greetings to the congregation. Dr. Charlie Cooper from First Baptist Church in Sylvania gave the welcome and opened with prayer. For congregational singing of “Blessed Assurance, Jesus is Mine”, Rev. David Wilson, also from First Baptist Church, Sylvania, led the messengers in congregational singing as Mrs. Jan Austin accompanied on piano and Mrs. Roslyn Matheson accompanied on organ. Rev. Allen asked that all new pastors stand as their names were called to introduce them to the messengers and guests. They were: New Pastors Dr. Jack Gatlin, McDonald Rev. Larry Jones, Bay Branch Rev. Bert Hickman, Big Horse Creek Rev. Justin Milliken, Memorial Rev. Charlie Cooper, First Baptist-Sylvania Rev. Al Usher, Union Rev. Andy Allen, West Millen Rev. Jason Teal, First Baptist-Sylvania BUSINESS SESSION Election of Officers Rev. Jimmy Allen explained that this election was done for moderator back in the July Executive Committee meeting. Since the clerk, Mrs. Yvonne Buie and the vice-moderator, Rev. Jamey Archer, had already been approved by clapping hands in the same July Executive meeting, this part of the election was not continued. The slate of Associational ministry Directors and Team Leaders were approved by a show of hands in a time when reports were approved. Rev. Allen then led us into another part of the business session. He read two parts of the Bylaws found printed in our packets and that had been discussed in the July session of the Executive Committee Meeting. The changes that were recommended by the administrative team are as follows: The document currently reads: 4. Executive Committee 4.1 Membership and Quorum: The executive Committee shall consist of the officers of the Association, Committee Chairs, and two duly elected members from each church and the pastors of the member churches. Twenty-five members shall constitute a quorum at any meeting. Suggested change: 4. Executive Committee 4.1 Membership and Quorum: The executive Committee shall consist of the officers of the Association, Committee Chairs, two duly elected members from each church, and the pastors of the member churches. The messengers in attendance shall constitute a quorum for any Executive Committee Meeting. The document currently reads: 5. Annual Meeting 5.1 Dates and sites: The Annual associational meeting shall convene its regular meeting in September of each year. The meeting will be a one-day meeting. The site of the meeting will be at the First Baptist Church of Sylvania. 6 Suggested change 5.Annual Meeting 5.1 Dates and sites: The Annual associational meeting shall convene its regular meeting in September of each year. The meeting will be in one of the Association churches or another agreed upon site. There was no discussion. Each section was voted upon separately. The changes to the Constitution and By Laws were approved by a show of hands. Time of Worship Rev. David Wilson led the congregation in the singing of “ Days of Elijah.” He explained that this is a song of hope and encouragement. The music was beautiful and uplifting! Following congregational singing, Rev. Bobby Braswell and Rev. Gary Leutzinger sang an inspiring duet with Rev. Braswell accompanying on the guitar. Rev. Bobby Braswell told that one of the joys of the Crusade in Jenkins County was in getting to know the people there. He introduced Rev. Brad Boynton from the Dry Branch Baptist Church in Jenkins County as the preacher to bring the missionary sermon. Rev. Boynton used Romans 10 as his text. He encouraged us to “make a difference” in the lives of the lost people that we come in contact with. We will need to reach out to others to bring this about. We need to pray for at least three people each day. In Romans 10:9 we find the promise, “if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.” Rev. Boynton told us that “He Can and He Will”. Recognition of Guests and Representatives of GBC Rev. Jimmy Allen recognized J. Marcus Merritt who is coming tonight as our Evangelism Specialist for the GBC. He will be our Cooperative Program Speaker later in the program. Mission Opportunity Presentation Casey Garvin and Peggy McLaughlin presented needs for our Pregnancy Care Center in Jenkins County. Georgia has one of the highest instances of pregnancy of unwed mothers. The center provides classes to the pregnant girls and women that come to them for help. They are also able to share the gospel with them. They need to know the grace of God and His healing and forgiving. This center is a nonprofit organization and wants to offer free services to the girls. The workers at the center want to encourage the mothers to raise the child in a Christian home. Casey used Mary, the mother of Jesus, as an unwed mother and let the messengers contemplate what could have happened in this case. Following Peggy McLaughlin’s expression in words, she then did an expressive interpretation for us to a recording that tells us that a “baby changes everything”. REPORTS The time arrived for the presentation of reports for the Session. These were presented in written form and were included in our packets. The moderator called for additional comments to elaborate on the written reports. Rev. Bobby Braswell presented a power point display on the screen to show us the mission activities in Pittsburg, Peru, the Crusade in Jenkins County and the children’s camp for our association. Following his power point presentation, Rev. Braswell told a little more about some of the pictures we could see and told us that next year there may be a new location for the children’s camp. The site being considered is New Ebenezer in Effingham County. He told us that David Searles had been Camp Pastor. There were 78 total people to attend and 14 professions of faith. Rev. Braswell also spoke of the mission trips to Pittsburg and Peru. In Pittsburgh, the team led in Vacation Bible School and other ministries. The team plans to return next year for the same type of work. In Peru, the team was able to minister to a new congregation as well as lead the pastors of that region. The people that went from our association were: Rev. Pete Wall, Rev. Gary Leutzinger, and Rev. Bobby Braswell. 7 The JC4JC Crusade was very productive. There were teams that witnessed for Christ as well as the mobile heath unit, equipped with doctor and dentist, and a much-needed job fair. Rev. Allen pointed out that all of the reports were before us in printed form. He allowed time for the messengers to read over these reports. Then from the group of messengers was a motion to accept all of the reports. Closely following was a second. The vote was then taken by the moderator with a show of hand to approve the acceptance of all of the reports. Congregational singing of “Set My Soul Afire” led by Rev. David Wilson was the next item on the agenda. This was followed by a moving special sung by Danielle McBride who had been introduced by Rev. Gary Leutzinger. During this “Time of Worship, the Cooperative Program Message” was brought to us by Rev. J. Marcus Merritt, the Evangelism Specialist for the GBC, who has served in various capacities in Alabama and Georgia. He told us of conferences and handouts that he had brought to tell about these and placed them in the church vestibule Rev. Merritt explained how we need to fit in with those we are witnessing to, as Paul did. He wanted to explain Paul’s strategy so that we could make it our strategy. He gave an example of a motorcycle biker that he had witnesses to while they were both pumping gas and then moved the conversation over to the convenience store. He explained that you must gain the confidence of those who are lost if you are to relate to them and bring Christ to them. Rev. Merritt closed his message with prayer. Rev. Allen called all officers, directors and associational team members to come forward for a “Commissioning of Associational Leaders”. Rev. Allen prayed that the leaders for the coming year would accomplish great things in Thy Name. He closed his prayer with the request that the Lord would abide with us and lead us in all that we do for His Glory. Rev. Jimmy Allen, moderator, closed the annual meeting. The churches have been willing gracious hosts and the dinners have been a true smorgasbord, with something for everyone. Our first meeting was on November 12th with McDonald Baptist Church as host. Rev. Bobby Braswell gave the devotion and Rev. F.L. Holloway played his guitar and sang for us. The tables were decorated for fall and we enjoyed the day. On February 11th, we had Valentine’s Day decorations and love was the theme. Rev. Jeff Gibson sang some “oldies” for us as well as some of his original material. He entertained with some humorous observations about love and relationships. Green Fork Baptist Church hosted the dinner. In May, spring was the theme as Union and Bay Branch joined forces to host the luncheon on the 13th. We had a large crowd, with over 60 in attendance. Once again the food was outstanding. Rev. Bob Green, who served as our interim associational missionary in 2004, was the speaker and singer for the day. He has written several books since he retired and was very inspiring about remaining active as a senior adult. Our banquet was in August and the attendance was fantastic. Almost 150 people gathered to enjoy a catered dinner (by Wall’s Diner) and lots of fellowship. Music was provided by a trio of First Baptist Church. They also led the seniors in singing “Gaither Style” songs. A quartet from Oak Grove Methodist Church sang several songs in four part harmony. Rev. Brad Boynton was the speaker and he challenged the seniors to work with and mentor the younger Christians in their church and community, being patient and never tire doing the Kingdom work. Businesses donated several door prizes which were given away. Sharon Hagan worked with me creating some outstanding table arrangements. All in all, I have had a great year working with the most appreciative, dependable, resilient folks of the Middle Baptist Association. It is a pleasure to serve as the director of this group because they are earnest and faithful followers of Christ. Thank you for the opportunity and privilege. Veronica Howard, Senior Adult Director 16 Middle Baptist Men's Ministry Annual Report Church Year 2009-2010 The following report covers three basic points: Objectives, goals and results. The Objectives of the Men's Ministry were to rededicate, give hope to men regarding their daily lives, challenge men to grow in biblical knowledge, wisdom and discernment, and pray for and support the church staff. The goals are to bring unity among church families, the churches in the Middle Baptist Association and encourage men not to waiver from sound doctrine regardless of the cost, and to seek the leadership of the Holy Spirit that will result in leading the lost to acceptance of Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord. We pray that the Baptist Men's Ministry has had a positive impact on the lives of others. In closing, there has perhaps never been a more pivotal moment in history related to manhood and our creation in the image of God. Fatherhood has been abandoned. Husbandship has been demeaned and elderly men rejected. Against this backdrop, the Lord is summoning generations of men to rise up into their Godappointed call as friends, fathers, husbands, resource seniors and in every aspect of their appointment to stand forth in Christlikeness. May we Baptist Men accept this challenge. Respectfully submitted. Osal J. Evans, Director of Men's Ministry Middle Baptist Association 17 MBA Children’s Camp Report, 2010 Jesus said, “Let the little children come unto Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the kingdom of God” (Luke 18:16). One of the ways we can help to fulfill this command is by supporting Children’s Camp. We had 58 children in attendance at the Savannah Baptist Assembly in Guyton, GA at this year’s Camp. The theme for the week was “Clay in God’s Hands,” which is really what we ended up becoming. We had an unexpected leadership need at the last minute this year and workers had to adjust accordingly. Thankfully, a couple of Association pastors and leaders really stepped up. These volunteers assumed responsibility for overseeing children and handling other tasks that weren’t initially on our agendas. David Wheeler volunteered to help at the last minute and he is a natural with kids. The outcome was a great blessing: we had 14 children make professions of faith at Camp. The churches these children attend were contacted in the following weeks so that they could follow up on their commitments. David Searles from Millen Baptist was our Camp Pastor once again. David always does a great job of reaching kids on their level. His messages were on the mark again this year. Several pastors shared in the morning teaching times as we developed our theme for the week. Gary Leutzinger and Bobby Braswell led worship. The children participated in Bible Drill, Missions, Music and Recreation as well. We always have great support from our counselors and junior counselors who volunteer from our churches. Every year we are reminded that “stay flexible” is the watchword in serving in missions! Thanks to churches that made scholarships available for children. What a great investment in impressionable lives! There were about fourteen children who could not have gone to camp without financial help this year. The 2010 Camp operated in the black, which is a great blessing going forward. We are working on organizing Camp for 2011. We encourage you to involve the children of your church in the MBA Children’s Camp. The cost is very affordable compared to many camp experiences, and invariably lives are changed eternally at Children’s Camp. Thanks to everyone who made this camp a blessing! Bobby Braswell, Jr. & Gary Leutzinger Camp co-directors 18 Acts 1:8 Report We had great opportunities to be on mission this year in the association. During the summer we took a team to Pittsburgh Baptist Church. This is our second year in partnership with this church. The team led and assisted in Vacation Bible School and ministered to more than 80 children, youth and adults. The church is still reaping from this great week of ministry. We will be returning next year during the third week of June to lead in Vacation Bible School. The association also had a part in supporting a team going to Lampa, Peru to minister to a new congregation. Pastors Bobby Braswell, Pete Wall, and Gary Leutzinger were part of this team that God used in a mighty way. We would like to encourage the association to pray for Pastor Juan and his congregation as they reach out to the people in Lampa and the Puno region to spread the good news of Jesus Christ. We look forward to the great opportunities before us to be on mission in our association, as well as our state and beyond. The Acts 1:8 team will continue to help lead our churches to be on mission and to provide many opportunities for teams to go and tell others about Jesus. It takes every member and every church to cooperate together to win this world to Christ. It is our prayer that every church will seek God and how they can join Him in the work He is already doing. Please feel free to contact your Acts 1:8 team if we can assist you in anyway in the area of missions. We look forward to seeing many people united together in the coming year to form teams to be witnesses for Jesus Christ at home and around the world! Gary Leutzinger Acts 1:8 Team Leader 19 Youth 2009-2010 Two associational youth events were held in conjunction with the Spring Inspirational Meeting and the Jenkins County 4 Jesus Christ Crusade. Both of these events incorporated fun, music, praise and a message, bringing youth from different churches together to worship. The spring meeting was held at First Baptist Church of Sylvania in the Family Life Center on April 25th. Approximately 140 gathered for an afternoon and evening of activities. A “ 3 on 3” basketball tournament and a ping pong tournament began the day. Pineora Baptist proved the champs at basketball and Eli Woods took the prize for ping pong. Pizza was ordered for supper before we began the worship rally. Youth groups performed skits. Jason Teal, FBC’s youth pastor, gave a great inspiring message and the group “One King” performed in concert. Thirteen churches were represented at this event. The Monday night of the JC4JC Crusade was designated as Youth Night. 6th through 12th graders were invited to come to the Jenkins County Ag Center at 4:00pm. Event planning involved pastors and leaders from different denominations. The kids enjoyed rock climbing and a bungee harness and food. There were approximately 120 in attendance. The group moved over to the gymnatorium where the Nick Ivey Band led an energetic praise and worship rally prior to the crusade. I presented a special message for the youth at this rally. Youth ministry is challenging, yet rewarding. New and different ways of worship seem to be effective in reaching out to this expansive mission field. Both events provided opportunities for youth to hear the Gospel of Christ, to interact with their peers, and to actively participate in worship. I encourage the association to continue investing in our youth. The results will affect the Kingdom for many years to come. Justin Milliken, Youth Director 20 Budget / Finance Report 2010-2011 2009-2010 has been a fiscal year of challenges. As with many of our churches, giving seems to be suffering the effects of the sluggish national economy. Percentage based contributions suggest that congregations are working with less than in previous years. Our budget team took a look at the receipts, ministries, and operations of the association when preparing the 2010-2011 budget. Wherever possible, budget items were cut, shaving each closely toward the actual expense figures for the previous year. Overall, the new year’s budget was approved by the Executive Committee in July with $2286.00 in reductions. We optimistically presented a total projection of $104,392.14. Funds in our checking account, which had accumulated due to a gap in full-time directors, have been used to offset the shortfall in giving. Reserves on deposit with the Georgia Baptist Foundation have remained untouched. The Jenkins County for Jesus Christ Crusade was most likely a factor in our “giving to budget” shortfall. The Evangelism Committee established a separate budget. Churches were asked to give, over and above associational contributions, toward this county-wide evangelistic event. With approximately $30,000.00 collected through individuals, organizations, and churches, we concluded that this may have been a factor in decreased budgeted giving. Most of the churches directed funds through the MBA treasury by designating their checks for the crusade. It is with encouragement and pleading that I conclude this report. I encourage each church to continue to support the association and its work through participation, use, and prayer, remembering that it is a resource center for active, ongoing ministry. I plead with each church to continue to support the association with regular contributions, maintaining the highest level allowed by your budget. Ministry expanded is the end result of this kind of investment. As members of the MBA, the challenge remains to be both active and diligent in your commitment to this union. Glen Davis Finance Team Leader 21 22 Treasurer’s Report 2009-2010 The Middle Baptist Association is blessed to be comprised of churches that have a heart for missions and continue to fund the vision they set forth. Even with the effects of a sagging economy, we have been able to use the funds provided to begin new ministries, like the pregnancy care center; we have been able to reach out beyond our borders to share Christ, with mission teams to Pittsburgh and Peru; and saturate an entire county with workers, offering the Gospel and care, as we did with Jenkins County 4 Jesus Christ. We did not balance our budget with giving meeting the projected budget. There was a shortfall that was anticipated as we stepped out on faith last year. Our goal was to maintain the ministries ongoing and increase our services, which we have. The last decade had created a surplus of funds, most of which are still available to offset necessary overruns. It is our desire to add value to the MBA by adding opportunities and resources for our churches. With restraint, we have stayed within budget lines and will continue to be fiscally responsible, cutting expenses where we can and maximizing service whenever possible. I have printed a “Giving by Churches to Budget” report. Please compare it to your church records. Often oversights and errors can be corrected by doing just that. Several churches sent in contributions in September for the 2009-2010 year. If they were not deposited in August they did not appear on the report. As a member of the Finance Team, I ask each church to maintain their giving. We propose budgets based on current information and are already into the 20102011 fiscal year. The Financial Report is showing we were a little under budget. We are always looking for ways to coordinate ministry without exceeding allowances. Variances were taken into consideration as the proposed budget was prepared. The designated funds report shows line items earmarked for specific ministry. The balances of funds held by the Georgia Baptist Foundation are shown, the first being available for budgeted work ($14,020.94) and the second for Children’s Camp ($20,117.50). These vary with the national markets. The Jenkins County 4 Jesus Christ Crusade funds will be available for our next crusade as “seed” money when we move to Screven County in 2011. The On Mission Celebration account is on deposit for our next OMC event which is not scheduled yet. Overall, God has blessed our association with the finances to back the ministries we value. We pray that the churches will continue to utilize the association and continue to support it financially, as we seek to intensify our affect on Jenkins, Screven and Effingham Counties, sharing Christ and being on mission together. Annora Mallard, MBA Treasurer 23 24 25 Woman’s Missionary Union 2009-2010 Watchword: “Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind. This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-37NIV,adapted) Critical Issue: Poverty Emphasis: Called to Love Mission: To inform and inspire the Christian woman to influence her world for Christ. With the emphasis, Called to Love, on our minds, the WMU leadership team has been regrouping, retraining, reconnecting, and revitalizing our role within the churches of the Middle Baptist Association. Using the new 2007-2010 annual report book as a spring board, I have spoken with representatives of every active church and found women on mission all over our area. Even in churches without a formal WMU organization, women are holding Bible studies, collecting for food drives, volunteering time, energy and resources to projects that help communities and spread the Gospel of Christ. We are rich with hearts called to love. Our challenge as leaders is to coordinate that willingness and channel it in directions that impact our mission fields. The following are events and opportunities past that WMU sponsored, promoted or participated in during 2009-2010. Be proactive in promoting International, North American, State and Associational Missions in our own churches. Do not be shy in creating new ways to teach “mission mindedness” to our children. Connect with our associational WMU projects, even if you are not a member of a circle or local WMU. Call on us to train or work within your church. That is what we are here for. Remember, we are facilitators, eager to work with all our ladies to expand and extol the Lord through missions. Change a Life. Change the World. SYLVANIA, GA 30467 27 EVANGELISM I am very excited to report the great evangelistic work God has done through our Association this year. You may remember the Evangelism Team’s long-range goal to conduct an evangelistic crusade in each of the three counties which make up our Association. Phase one of that plan was carried out this year with the Jenkins County 4 Jesus Christ Crusade, held at the high school Gymnatorium in Millen. The Crusade began on Saturday, July 17 with a community fair and block party. The Georgia Baptist Health Unit was on hand to minister to the medical needs of the community. Over 80 uninsured residents received medical and dental care. A job fair also gave community residents opportunities to speak with prospective employers and educational representatives. Around 1,000 were present the first night of the crusade, making for our largest attendance of the week. Rev. Jeff Crook, Pastor of Blackshear Place Baptist Church in Flowery Branch did an outstanding job presenting the Gospel and challenging believers each evening. The Nick Ivey Band, the Disciples for Christ Choir, Sanctified Trio, and Babbie Mason led us in worship and God greatly used them. Lex Luger, former Pro Wrestler, gave a powerful testimony. Thirty-nine people prayed to receive Christ, other decisions were recorded, and God only knows the number of hearts touched. On behalf of the Evangelism Team, we thank the many volunteers from all across our Association, as well as those from the various churches of Jenkins County, for their many efforts in this great work. We also appreciate the wonderful financial support from our churches and many individuals. Of course, all the praise ultimately goes to our Lord. Without His wisdom, guidance, and power, no real good would have been accomplished. This year, plans go into effect to hold a similar crusade in Screven County. We ask all of our churches to support the effort. We are excited about what God will do. In Christ, Rev. Jamie Archer, Evangelism Team Leader 28 Regional State Missionary East Georgia Region Georgia Baptist Convention It has been a joy to serve for the last eight years as the Regional State Missionary for this region of our state convention. We have seen growth in the ministries of many of our churches; changes in leadership in all seven associations; and had the joy of sharing in the work of each Association. Thank you for allowing me to come alongside you and work to advance the Kingdom of God. It is my prayer that God will strengthen the work of the churches and the associations. May we seek ways we can work together to advance the Kingdom of God both in our churches and in our associations. The days ahead are going to be challenging. Financial resources will probably continue to be tight – but as individual Christians, we are called to be faithful in every area of stewardship! We ask that of our church members, and our churches are to be good stewards also. Part of that includes providing workers for the Association as well as financial resources to the Association. Typically we encourage churches to move toward a minimum percentage of 3% to the Association. In recent years, Cooperative Program giving has lagged behind previous years as the economy has hurt giving to the individual churches, and thus to the CP. As a result, our state has had to make hard decisions, and this fall, six of the men serving as Regional State Missionaries were let go. I was one of those six. I still believe that the Cooperative Program is the most effective way of providing for the support of Southern Baptist Missions. Please support the CP through your giving as well as your preaching and going. May God bless you in the days to come. Gratefully, Ted C. Kandler 29 Baptist Village Retirement Communities Waycross, Macon, Lake Park As our Lord Jesus began the Sermon on the Mount he challenged all of us with the beatitudes, images of our proper goals. Then he focused these goals and said, “You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before men, that they may see your good deeds and praise your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:14-16) What we are as followers of Jesus Christ is clearly seen by a darkened world. One of the Lord’s lights is Baptist Village Retirement Communities. For more than 50 years Georgia Baptists have been a light in the world through the ministry of Baptist Village Retirement Communities. In 1954 Georgia Baptists approved a recommendation from the Executive Committee that a ministry be created with its primary focus to provide “housing for senior citizens.” A light began to glow as Georgia Baptists established a “Baptist Village.” Through the years Baptist Village has cared for thousands and today more than 500 seniors call Baptist Village home. The necessity of the ministry of Baptist Village Retirement Communities is as pressing today as ever. The number of Americans over age 65 will more than double, from 34.8 million in 2000 (12 percent of the population) to 78 million (20 percent of the total population) in 2030. It is the goal of Baptist Village to provide a full continuum of care for seniors in an unapologetically Christian environment. Baptist Village offers Independent living in Waycross and Macon, assisted living in Waycross, Macon and Lake Park, and skilled nursing care in Waycross. In each of these locations and facilities Baptist Village seeks to bring the light of God’s love into the lives of senior adults and their families. Baptist Village seeks to be an asset to local churches and Associations in the ministry to seniors. The staff of Baptist Village stands ready to assist all Georgia Baptist Churches, Associations, and individuals. Dr. Ben Haygood, Vice President of Advancement and/or the Reverend Hugh Rockett, Associate in Advancement, are available at no cost to provide programs for senior adult events, meetings, and individual consultations. Topics for these programs and consultations cover a wide range of issues important to seniors like estate planning, wills, trusts, long-term care insurance etc. For information or to schedule an event contact Dr. Ben Haygood at 478-737-2149 or Reverend Hugh Rockett at 478-960-8671, or call the Corporate Office at 912-283-1234, Extension 106. Thank you for taking part in what God is doing at Baptist Village Retirement Communities. We can only do what God calls us to do as you let your light shine with us through the Cooperative Program and other gifts. Delos L. Sharpton, our President/CEO, invites you and your groups to any of our campuses for a visit. Come see what God is doing at Baptist Village.
