The Waste Management and Recycling Association of Singapore (WMRAS) is
heartened to read of the National Environment Agency's efforts to encourage more
households to recycle ("Bigger push to get S'poreans to recycle").
“Indeed, a concerted effort nationwide needs to be made, in order to
develop a recycling culture, if we are to improve Singapore's
recycling rate. Otherwise, Singaporeans will continue to be "bo chap"
or "cannot be bothered" to recycle.”
– WMRAS Chairman Melissa Tan

BINS FULL, SO WE LITTER?
The National Environment Agency (NEA) has started a pilot project to fit rubbish
bins with sensors that can detect when they are full, and track whether waste
collectors are doing their jobs properly.
The "litter-bin management system" could also help the collectors to quickly empty
full bins and to identify areas that may need more of them.
Ms Melissa Tan, chairman of the Waste Management and Recycling Association of
Singapore, said such sensors could be used to help alleviate labour shortages in the
waste collection industry.
"This technology could help us to deploy manpower only when the bin is full," she
said. "The public waste collectors now do daily collection for HDB blocks but
sometimes that's not necessary."

WINRIGO FEATURED IN ST ARTICLE
Source: The Straits Times, 9 Apr 2015
Mr Teri Teo co-founded Winrigo in 2001 after spending more than 15 years in the plastics industry in production and sales - and
realising he had been doing "too much damage to the environment".
Today, Winrigo's products range from eco-cutlery to food packaging to biodegradable plastic bags, which are supplied to
companies, although he declined to disclose which ones.
Its technology has been certified by international agencies such as the United States-based Underwriters' Laboratories while
garnering recognition locally via the Singapore Green Label and the Sustainable Manufacturing Label.

US BUSINESS MISSION 31 MAY – 5 JUNE 2015
WMRAS organised its first business mission to the United States. 6 companies participated in the trip to Las Vegas, namely: Colex
Environmental, LHT Holdings, Soon Yong Huat Engineering Construction, Wah & Hua, Waste Integrated Services &
Environmental and Wong Fong Engineering Works (1988) together with JTC and NEA. Besides visiting the WasteExpo and having
business meetings on 2 and 3 June, the delegation visited Sands Expo to learn about the sustainable best practices in operations
and waste management at the hotels, casinos and events throughout the year. A visit to the largest landfill in the United States
(500 years lifespan!) was also arranged. It was an eye opening experience to view such a massive site and witness how the owner,
Republic Services operates and manages the landfill while harnessing natural gas produced at the landfill. Do keep a lookout for
our next overseas business mission and sign up for a most memorable experience.
