Winter to Spring SPECIAL SECTION / seattletimes.com A guide to the season’s best entertainment and arts The arts are in the air. In the winter. Yes indeed, the area’s arts scene is just as lively and varied during the winter and spring as it is during the fall. But in the past, this newspaper has limited its seasonal arts previews to the Fall Arts Guide and the Holiday Entertainment Guide, shortchanging the winter and spring months. Well no more. Today we present The Seattle Times Winter & Spring Arts Guide, a list of arts-and-entertainment highlights from the nightlife scene (including con- Highlights inside Theater “The Seafarer,” “Frost/Nixon,” “Crime and Punishment” > 2 Pop, jazz and comedy Britney Spears, Blue Scholars, Barry Manilow> 4 certs, clubs, jazz/world and comedy), theater, classical music, dance, books and authors, and visual arts. We’ve compiled them all — with top picks from our staff writers and critics — in a handy, keep-and-save, 12page pullout section, inside the regular MovieTimes pullout. Since this week’s NWTicket is really three sections in one, you might find it easier to read if you pull the book apart. NWTicket — A&E for the week ahead, Feb. 6-12. MovieTimes — Movie reviews and showtimes. Winter & Spring Arts Guide — A&E highlights from today through May. For constantly updated listings, new shows, cancellations and reviews, keep reading The Seattle Times: in print on the Monday-Saturday Your pages in the B section, in NW Arts & Life on Sundays, and NWTicket every Friday; and every day at seattletimes.com/entertainment. Classical music Joshua Bell, Krystian Zimerman, Ten Grands > 6 Dance PNB’s “Swan Lake,” Spectrum, Mark Morris Dance Group > 8 Books Junot Díaz, Michael Perry, Ruth Reichl > 9 Visual arts African-American quilts and art from Yale University > 11 At the top of our list in upcoming theater offerings? An array of world and local debuts. Three won kudos in London and New York: “The Seafarer,” a study of fraying male friendships by Irish dramatist Conor McPherson (at Seattle Repertory Theatre); “The History Boys,” Alan Bennett’s take on ambitious English schoolboys and their eccentric teacher (at ArtsWest); and Peter Morgan’s play “Frost/Nixon,” a keen look backstage at former President Nixon’s momentous TV interview with talk-show host David Frost. (“Frost/Nixon,” coming to the Paramount Theatre, beats the Oscar-nominated movie version in sheer immediacy.) Book-It Repertory Theatre unveils “The Beautiful Things That Heaven Bears,” a new work based on Dinaw Mengestu’s novel about an Ethiopian immigrant finding his way in America. For celebrity hounds, Carrie Fisher bares all in her solo memoir “Wishful Drinking” (at Seattle Rep). And ACT and Intiman theaters open their 2009 seasons with fresh treatments of some superbly dark, classic fiction: “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” (at ACT) and “Crime and Punishment” (at Intiman). The hottest pop ticket has to be Britney Spears. After her much-publicized meltdown and comeback, she’s returning with a full arena tour, playing the Tacoma Dome on April 9. Continuing the pop trip, Lady GaGa is touring, too, singing in Seattle at the Showbox at the Market on March 16. In the hip-hop vein, the Blue Scholars and Common Market rap for three nights at Neumo’s mid-March. Another show not to miss is Estelle. The singer — Kanye West’s muse on the single “American Boy” — sings at the Showbox at the Market on March 2. Later, indie icon DJ Peanut Butter Wolf spins at Chop Suey on April 25. For those hoping to make Mom all giddy, Barry Manilow is performing at a special benefit for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation on March 15 at the Comcast Arena in Everett. Another idol of a similar era, Rick Springfield, plays the Emerald Queen Casino on April 24. If Christian rock is your thing, mark your calendar for March 19. That’s when MercyMe, Jeremy Camp and Hawk Nelson — all favorites in Christian contemporary — play KeyArena. Another popular singer, Chris Tomlin, is scheduled to perform the new ShoWare Center in Kent on March 8.
