Prohibition, the destruction caused by the boll weevil, the rise of mass media, improvements in daily life, increases in
tourism and recreation, the revival of the K.K.K, and the contributions of South Carolinians to the Harlem Renaissance
and the Southern Literary Renaissance.
Focus Question:​ What changes occurred in South Carolina during the 1920’s?

1. Describe the economic effect of WWI on SC' economy. (It boosted the economy with higher crop prices
and new military bases being built.)
2. Describe how African American soldiers were treated when they returned from war. (The South was still
racist and some would be murdered, hung in their uniforms even.)
3. Explain why African Americans would volunteer to fight in WWI for the U.S.? (They wanted to fight
and prove they were patriotic and hoped to end discrimination and gain equal rights.)

patriotic.)
2. How did technology change life for people in SC during the 1920's? (More people got electricity and were able to
get appliances that made life easier.)
3. Why did crop prices fall after WWI. (There was overproduction and drop in demand from overseas markets.)

1. How would you describe the effects of prohibition on SC? (It was a failure, crime actually increased.)
2. What mass media did people in SC have and how did it affect them? (People had access to radios and would go
see movies, they felt connected to other parts of the US.)
3. Describe the Southern Literacy Movement. (It included groups like the Charleston Poetry Society which promoted
literature, plays, and poetry by Southern writers.)
4. Which hate group used mass media to increase it influence and membership during the 1920s? (the KKK)

2. Describe the economy in SC during most of the 1920's. (Agriculture was suffering and people moved to urban
areas where they could get jobs at factories.)
3. What affect did the boll weevil have in SC during the 1920's? (Destroyed crops and would help end cotton
production in SC.)
4. What was the biggest New Deal program in SC? (The Santee Cooper Electricity Program)
