Estimate sums and differences of fractions and mixed numbers by rounding to the nearest whole number. Use models to add and subtract mixed numbers. Use models and computational procedures to add mixed numbers. Use models and computational procedures to subtract mixed numbers. Solve more complex problems involving the addition and subtraction of mixed numbers . Topic 11: ● ● ● ● Use fractions to represent division, and locate and place fractions on a number line Multiply a fraction by a whole number Use compatible numbers and rounding to estimate with fractions Give the product of two fractions BOE Approved 4/15 GRADE: ● ● ● ● Cliffside Park Public Schools 5 Find the area of rectangles Compare the size of the product to the size of one factor without multiplying as they begin to consider multiplication as scaling Divide whole numbers by fractions Discover the inverse relationship between multiplication and division that will help to divide unit fractions by whole numbers Topic 13 ● ● ● ● ● ● ● Understand that relationships like 1 foot = 12 inches can be used to convert customary length measurements Convert from one unit of customary length (inches, feet, yards, and miles) to another Convert from one unit of customary capacity (gallons, quarts, pints, cups, and fluid ounces) to another Convert from one customary unit of weight ounces, pounds, and comes to another and apply this skill to compare quantities Convert one metric unit of length (kilometer, meter, centimeter, and millimeter )into another Convert from one metric unit of capacity (liter and milliliters) to another Convert from one metric unit of mass (milligrams, grams, and kilograms) to another Duration: December Essential Questions: Topic 10: ● What does it mean to add and subtract mixed numbers? ● What is a standard procedure for adding and subtracting mixed numbers? Topic 11: ● What are standard procedures for estimating and finding products and quotients of fractions and mixed numbers? Topic 13: ● What are customary measurement units and how are they related? ● What are metric measurement units and how are they related? BOE Approved 4/15 GRADE: Cliffside Park Public Schools 5 Enduring Understandings: Topic 10: ● ● ● ● ● Fractional amounts greater than one can be represented using the whole number and a fraction. Whole number amounts can be represented as fractions. When the numerator and denominator are equal, the fraction equals one. Fractions greater than one can be named using a whole number and a fraction or an improper fraction. Models can be used to show different ways of adding and subtracting mixed numbers. There is more than one way to add or subtract mixed numbers. Sums and differences of mixed numbers can be estimated by rounding each mixed number to the nearest whole number. One way to add or subtract mixed numbers is to utilize a number line to model and find common denominators. Sometimes whole numbers or fractions need to be renamed. Topic 11: ● ● ● ● ● ● ● A fraction describes the division of a whole into equal parts, and it can be interpreted in more than one way depending on the whole to be divided The product of a whole number and a fraction can be interpreted in different ways. One interpretation is repeated addition. Multiplying a whole number by a fraction involves division as well as multiplication. The product is a fraction of the whole number. A unit square can be used to show the area meaning of fraction multiplication. When you multiply two fractions that are both less than 1, the product is smaller than either fraction. To multiply fractions, write the product of the numerators over the product of the denominators. The inverse relationship between multiplication and division can be used to divide with fractions. Rounding and compatible numbers can be used to estimate the product of fractions or mixed numbers. The relative size of the factors can be used to determine the relative size of the product. One way to find the product of mixed numbers is to change the calculation to an equivalent one involving improper fractions. BOE Approved 4/15 GRADE: ● Cliffside Park Public Schools 5 One way to find the quotient of a whole number divided by a fraction is to multiply the whole number by the reciprocal of the fractio Relevant Standards: (i.e., CCSS; NJCCCS; NGSS) Topic 10: 5.NF.1, 5.NF.2 Topic 11: 5.NF.3, 5NF.4, 5.NF.4.A, 5.NF.4.B, 5.NF.5, 5.NF.5.A, 5.NF.5.B, 5.NF.6, 5.NF.7, 5.NF.7.A, 5.NF.7.B, 5.NF.7.C, Topic 13: 5.MD.1 CCSS.MATH.PRACTICE.MP1 Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them. The smallest bat in the world is the bumblebee bat of Thailand with a wingspan of about 61/2 inches. BOE Approved 4/15 GRADE: Cliffside Park Public Schools 5 Have each student research the length of different species of bats. For each one, students should write the wingspan as a mixed number. Then students should create story problems that involve adding and subtracting these mixed numbers. Social Studies: Florida fishing industry provides more than 90% of the nation's supply of grouper, pompano, mullet, stone crab, pink shrimp, spiny lobsters, and Spanish mackerel. Florida seafood harvest contributes almost 1 billion dollars annually to the state’s economy, and Florida has more seafood processing plant than any other state. Have each student use the internet to find Florida fishing records. Have them choose 3 records and for each one draw a picture of the fish and state it weight in pounds. Then they should convert the wait to ounces. Post the papers on a “Florida Fishing Records” bulletin board.
