Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? By Bill Martin Jr & Eric Carle In this story a common question is asked between the animals. What do you think you will see?! Before: Take some time to introduce the story and tell the children a little bit about it. Use the cover to create a question to help gain the interest of the children. • “I wonder why there is a panda bear, seal, and penguin on the cover. What do you think will happen with them in this story? During: While you are reading continue to look at the illustrations and ask more questions. Talk about what each animal can see and how they might have come across that animal. Point out any rare words and define them in a way that the children will understand best. Rare Words in Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? Soar: to fly or raise high in the air. Strolling: walk in a leisurely way Sneak: to move in a stealthy manner Whooping: to give or make a “whoop” sound Macaroni Penguin: a penguin with an orange crest, breeding on islands in the Antarctic. Strutting: walk with a stiff, erect, and apparently arrogant or conceited gait After: Discuss the story. Ask Questions... • • • • • Who did the panda bear see? What kind of penguin was in the story? What colour was the sea turtle? What kind of monkey is in the story? What did the dreaming child see? Let’s Talk About Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? In this story each animal talks about the animal that it can see. Most of these animals are rare animals that a person would no see every day but maybe somewhere like a zoo. Have you ever been to a zoo? What kind of animals did you see? What was your favorite animal? What would you like to see at the zoo if you have never been before? Panda Bear, Panda Bear, What Do You See? Play With Your Food! Be creative during snack time and use your imagination to create different animals with your snack foods. Here are some examples: Little Monkeys Little monkeys swinging in the tree, (Join hand with others and swing arms up and down.) All hold hands and swing with me.
