Alexander the Great was one of the best
leaders.
•
Alexander the Great was King of Macedonia
from 336 to 323 B.C. He was 19 when he
became king.
•
Alexander was the son of Philip II, King of Macedonia.
•
Alexander developed an interest in Greek culture,
philosophy, and heroic history, especially the works of
the poets Homer. Then later he took with him to Asia a
copy of Homers IIiad that Aristotle had prepared for him.
He hunted with a passion.

Alexander took over as King when one of his friends
killed Philip.
•
Alexander took over a city in Thrace and renamed is
Alexandropolis, after himself. Future cities names in
Alexander's honor would do this empire.

After Alexander successfully secured the
northern border in Thrace, he marched 250
miles south in a fortnight. Alexander marched up
to the gates of Thebes in 335 B.C. to give the
Thebans a chance to change there mind about
the revolt. The revolt was against Alexander
being King. The Thebans responded with
soldiers, and Alexander stormed the city,
burning Thebes and killing many citizens.
Athens quickly remained under Alexander's
rules.

In 334 B.C. Alexander began eastward marching
toward Asia Minor to confront the Persian
Empire. His army had nearly 40,00 men, and
12,000 reinforcements available. Alexander lead
a charge across the Ganicus and engaged in a
battle of hand-to-hand combat in which most of
Darius' generals died. In 333 B.C. He engaged
in a Darius battle for the second time in the
Syrian coastal city Issues. Darius escaped
Issues leaving his mother, wife, and two
daughters behind.

In Egypt, on the westernmost mouth of the Nile
river, Alexander founded the great city, his
namesake, Alexandria.

In 15 years on conquest, Alexander never lost a
battle.

He named a city after his horse.

After he defeated the Persians, Alexander started
dressing like them.

How did the Ancient Greeks contribute to

Greeks first recognized Historians. They saw the
importance of mathematics, sciences, writing,
architecture, sculptures, painting, poetry and
drama, trail, and execution, religious believes.
They studied the cause of illnesses and looked
for cures. Greeks had ideas about laws,
freedom, justice and government.
