In the development of this annual report, essential elements representative of the Library’s performance and commitment to improving services and resources for users was selected. To easily identify trends, the data collected is presented in a multiple year overview, where possible. Commentary Throughout the year, the Library remained at the center of academic activities on all six of the College’s strategically located campuses. Although there are seven physical library facilities, the system serves as one cohesive unit. Each library is a full service operation and provides identical services to all users. Our usage statistics continues to support the library’s premise that students, as well as faculty and staff, rely heavily on library services and resources. In addition, these statistics dually support the importance and value of suburban campus libraries. At the core of the services and resources that the library provides are qualified and willing staff who help users navigate the plethora of information that abounds in today’s global and technologically advanced society. To address the growth and need for extension of operational hours at suburban campuses, one of the administrative goals was to hire part-time librarians with a master’s degree in library science. As a result of meeting this goal, each suburban campus library is staffed with professional librarians at least 87% of the time, with the exception of the Cato Law Library (Claw). In ongoing efforts to review operations for maximum efficiency, it was ascertained that a change in the existing format for acquiring library resources was necessary. Due to the high number of online courses offered by the college and the growth of suburban campuses, the library’s collection development policy was adapted to increase its electronic subscriptions. With the addition of nine new databases acquired this year, the Library has a total of ninety-two online resources covering multidisciplinary subjects. As a means to further enhance access to resources online, Library Services purchased netbooks for student use (on-campus) and received a $20,000 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Planning Grant from the North Carolina State Library to determine the feasibility of acquiring a new integrated library and discovery system. In addition, through the college’s technology planning process, several suburban campuses were able to increase the number of desktop computers available in their facility. Library Instruction continues to be a major and desired service provided to students and faculty, both on and off campus. Approximately 9,500 students enrolled in face- to- face and embedded classes received instruction this academic year. To enhance instruction and improve information literacy initiatives, librarians began using LibGuides, created interactive tutorials for the Communication Department, and implemented a four-week internal instructor college for librarians. Library Services surveyed library patrons and it was evident from patron responses that computer access, collaborative group and quiet study space were the primarily needs. The majority of the suburban campus libraries have reached their capacity for collections and seating for patrons. Library managers have taken Page 2 proactive steps to respond to patron needs by weeding collections, rearranging space for maximum usability and negotiating with campus deans to acquire dedicated group study space in unoccupied classrooms. The ongoing collection of various statistics will continue to aide us in tracking the quality of our services and resources and in identifying trends to improve overall operations and services. Library Service is a viable College unit that embraces change and continues to keep abreast of the changes needed to provide optimal service to our patrons. Page 3 Library Services Expanded operational hours at suburban campuses to include the following: opening the week before classes start and opening on Fridays. Relocated collections for ease of use by patrons. For example, Telecourses, DVDs, children picture books, audiobooks, leisure books, and fun reads were all displayed in prominent locations. Procured access to a group study room outside the library at Levine and Cato Campuses. Library Marketing Increased the awareness of library resources and services by utilizing CPCC Facebook page. Created Library blogs for Harper, Cato and Claw Libraries. Worked with CPCC Graphic Design Class to design a marketing identity for Library Services. Participated in Student Resource Day and Fall Feast Activities. Partnered regularly with Student Life and Family Resource Center to produce library programming for Black History Month, Women’s History Month, Geek Fest, Student Open House, Fall Feast, Student Resource Day, Levine Science Fair, International Earth Day, Passport to Success, and Library Open House. Library Instruction Increased the number of Library Instruction classes: o Total number of in-person instruction classes: 393. Number of students served: 7860 (approximately) o Total number of embedded classes: 50. Number of students served: 1606. Created and developed an interactive tutorial for the Communication (COM) department. The tutorial is live for both COM 110 and COM 231, has a related quiz, and has been imported into ALL of the COM blackboard shells. Updated the COM Scavenger Hunt to more accurately reflect resources and information literacy best practices. Created a Research Assignment in Spring 2011 (similar to an assignment log) that allows students to note where they found their resources that they will use for their speech, and practice citing them (both orally and written). Created instruction Libguides for both internal and external use. Created a 4-week instructor college as internal training for instruction librarians. Created a blog (http://blogs.cpcc.edu/lib4ed/) to market library services, tools, and library instruction staff to the faculty who take advantage of library instruction services and resources. Assigned subject liaisons to instruction librarians to better market skills and services to specific faculty and increased the diversity of class subjects taught. Increased usage of Libguides since their launch in fall 2010. Changed weekly instruction open labs to twice monthly: one meeting serves as a discussion of instruction topics and a forum for discussing an instruction research article, and the other is a hands-on clinic designed to improve instruction activities and pedagogy. Created an ENG liaison group (with professional development credit) in order to improve communication with the English department and to develop tutorials for all sections of ENG 111/112/113 (similar to Communication). Page 4 Conducted a survey and focus group of ESL students to assess whether we are meeting their needs. Data obtained is being used to support a request to hire a Basic Skills / ESL librarian, serving a previously underserved population. Began using QR codes for research guides. Collection Development Acquired, processed and cataloged 8,479 pieces of material including both donated and purchased books, e-books, AV resources and equipment. Partnered with CPCC’s Disability Services, Marketing and the Teaching and Innovation Commons to catalog materials/equipment in order to circulate materials and equipment for students using assistive technology, for student recruitment, and for faculty technology development. o Selection, acquisition, processing and cataloging of 2, 287 individual titles; 2,974 total items Acquired nine (9) new databases which increase the number of total databases purchased by CPCC up to 29. Patrons have access to a total of Ninety-two (92) database resource offerings when NCLive resources are included. o Libguides o R2 Library o SRO w/CREDO o Anatomy TV enhanced Dental, Cardio and Thorax w/3D o ACS-4 for 2 online journal package o RefUniverse o Films on Demand o Mango o Marcive Preformed systematic weeding to reduce the age of the library collection and increased Resources for College Libraries holdings (RCL). RCL is used to select materials for college libraries and offers the most current core title selections for a library’s collection. RCL/RCR title increases – RCL/RCR holdings have increased by 50% from December 2007; up 2 percentage points since December 2009. Collections at all libraries were weeded. Completed the reviewing and weeding of microfilm holdings. Microfilm collections retained are being relocated to the first floor of the Central Library. Technology Purchased netbooks for student use. Students were allowed to check netbooks out and take them to class for three hours. Received a $20,000 LSTA Technology Planning Grant for determining the need for an Integrated Library System as well as a Library Discovery Service. Increased the number of computers available to students in the various libraries. Worked with ITS and Campus Printing to improve student access to copiers and printers (Color and BW) by acquiring these devices in some locations. Facilities Physical space in all libraries was redesign for more efficient use. For example, collections were weeded and shifted. DVDs were moved at Mercancas to make them more visible to the users. Page 5 Shelving was removed at Levine and Mercancas campuses to provide more group and individual study space. Repurposed and redesigned existing service desks at Central and suburban campuses. Surplused old equipment from all libraries and library storage areas. Expanded Archives physical space and installed compact shelving to enhance access to the college’s history. Training Improved new employee training by moving training materials from a physical folder to an online Blackboard class. Began developing an all staff core competency training program. Lynette Kendrick was hired as Library Specialist replacing Velma Jackson who resigned. Three (3) additional part-time Librarians were hired. Library Services began using three (3) work study students at the Central Campus to help support Reference, Circulation and Learning Commons. Part-time staff positions were re-evaluated and job titles changed to bring consistency based on job duties and responsibilities. Space Four of the six suburban libraries are at capacity for serving students. They lack the space to expand or provide quiet and group study space, a service that is requested by users. The lack of a dedicated computer classroom to teach Library Instruction classes at the suburban campuses Personnel Coverage of all service points during all open hours by a professional librarian. Information Literacy Task of reaching out to instructors to incorporate library instruction into the course syllabus or get their classes into the library. Funding Increase basic funding to cover inflation, support for new programs and growth of student population. Due to low circulation statistics, documented perceptions by students and faculty that the collection is outdated and failing to meet their academic needs, and the proposal to consolidate the print collection to one floor for ease of access, the collection has been heavily weeded in most of the LC subject areas based on criteria such as a review using BBAS , accreditation needs, curriculum revisions and additions, the age of the materials, circulation/usage statistics, and the overall quality and condition of the resources.
