Spring 2017
If you have any questions or ever need to talk about workshift please e-mail me
 at [email protected]

.
As a CZar in the sovereign nation of Krackistan you are required to complete:
1. 5 hours of workshift per week (As per your agreement with the BSC)
2. 5 hours Home Improvement (H.I.) for the semester (Tracked by the HI manager)
3. 2 hrs of weekend workshift for the semester (Tracked by Safe Space & Security managers)
BEGINNING OF THE SEMESTER INFORMATION
Preference

Form: Each CZar is responsible for filling out a workshift preference form by Monday, January 23rd. This
preference form is for your permanent workshift assignment. Please look at the workshift descriptions, posted online
at http://workshift.bsc.coop/caz/, so you can fill it out as accurately as possible.
The form can be found online at: http://workshift.bsc.coop/caz. Just look under the heading “First Things First” and
click the link that says, “Fill out your preference form.”

Temp Weeks: The first two weeks (Week 1,2) of the semester contract period are temporary workshift weeks. There
will be a sign up sheet posted in the common room on the Workshift Board for you to sign into “open shifts”.
Spring 2017 Temp Weeks: Week 1: Jan. 16th- Jan. 22nd
Week 2: Jan. 23rd - Jan. 29th
Permanent Shifts: Permanent shifts will be assigned starting the week of January 30th (Week 3). Starting week 3, all
CZars are responsible for completing their assigned workshifts. At any time during the semester, shifts may be added,
adjusted, removed or reassigned at the workshift manager’s discretion.
CO/CFS Shifts: CO (Central Office) and CFS (Central Food and Supplies) shifts may not be circled out of. If you are
assigned a CO/CFS shift you must inform the CZar of Labour in writing AT LEAST 48 HOURS IN ADVANCE if you are
unable to make a shift. You must also help the CZars of Labour find a replacement for the shift. Failure to do so will
result in the central level fine being passed on to the member assigned to the shift. If enough people do not sign up
for CO/CFS shifts they will be assigned to members based on the availability of their schedule.
Checking Workshift: You can check your workshift at workshift.bsc.coop/caz, logging in, and clicking “my personal
page”. You can see your workshift history, current assigned shifts, and your total hours down.
Accomadations
Disabilities/Injuries: It is very important that members with disabilities or injuries that could make workshift difficult
contact me ASAP so workshift accommodations can be made. CZars with disabilities may be able to receive a
workshift reduction by providing proper documentation to the Central Level. I cannot give you a workshift reduction
until you have gone to CO, and I cannot retroactively reduce your workshift from the weeks prior to presenting that
documentation. If you injure yourself, you have a week within injury time to present me with documentation which
includes your limitations. You may get your workshift reduced to 3 hours.
WORKSHIFT PROCEDURE
➢ HOW TO RECEIVE CREDIT FOR DOING A SHIFT:
In order to receive credit for your regular workshift you must be signed off online at workshift.bsc.coop/caz.
Another CZar will sign you off by going to Sign off a shift online and they will pull up your name under workshifter
and will pull up their name under verifier and will enter their personal password, which will verify that ALL aspects
of the shift were completed. NO HOURS WILL BE GIVEN FOR UNVERIFIED SHIFTS. If the shift is not completed
satisfactorily or if it is completed after the assigned time interval, there is a possibility that less hours will be given. If
a workshift is falsely verified, both the workshifter and verifier will be penalized by DOUBLE the amount of hours
that the shift required.
➢ WHAT TO DO IF YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BE ABLE TO DO YOUR ASSIGNED SHIFT:
If a member cannot perform their shift during the week, they must “SIGN OUT” of it or “SELL” it a minimum of
24 hours in advance. The sign out sheet is located at the bottom of every email sent from [email protected].
Signing out in advance allows for the shift to still get done by another willing individual looking to make up
hours. Shifts not signed out of more than 24 hours before the assigned shift will receive “Blown Hours.”
Blown Hours: If a shift is not completed during the allotted time, the CZar that the shift was assigned to will receive
blown hours (i.e. they will receive double negative hours for the shift they didn’t do). For example, if you blow a
bathroom shift (2.5 hours), you will get down 5 hours.
Extra Hours: It should be possible to do all workshifts in the allotted time. Extra hours for a shift will be given out at
the workshift manager’s discretion. Workshift hours that are not assigned must be approved by the CZar of Labour
preferably before completion.
ADDITIONAL SEMESTER-LONG REQUIREMENTS
Weekend Workshift: Each member will perform one 2 HOURS “weekend workshift.” This does not include regular
shifts such as Sunday IKC & cook crew, Saturday kitchen clean, etc. Weekend workshift opportunities can usually be
found on the listserv and include things such as party security, set -up & clean up.
H.I. Hours: Each member owes a minimum of 4 hours per contract period and each boarder owes 2 hours per
contract period for home improvement. Please contact the H.I. manager at [email protected] for more
information on home improvement projects you can do!
FINES!!!
When a member does not complete their 4 hours each week, they are “down hours.” Down hours are converted to
fines of $13.00 per hour at the end of each fining period. There will be 4 fining periods throughout the semester, the
end dates are:
●
●
●
●
FINING PERIOD 1: Sunday, February 12th (End of Week 4)
FINING PERIOD 2: Sunday, March 12th (End of Week 8)
FINING PERIOD 3: Sunday, April 9th (End of Week 12)
FINING PERIOD 4: Sunday, May 18th (End of Week 18)
On each of the aforementioned dates (from our aforementioned attorneys), all hours are due. NO LATE HOURS WILL
BE ENTERED (unless there are extenuating circumstances that are discussed with the workshift manager BEFORE the
fining date) . All czars have ample time to make up down hours. Hours not made up by the end of the fining period
will be charged to the member’s house account.
Fining periods 1 and 2 have 2 hour buffers, so If you are down 8 hours you are only fined for 6. Fining periods 3 and 4
have no buffer, so you will be fined for all of your hours.
If any CZar is down MORE THAN 10 HOURS at the end of the fining period, their FINES WILL BE DOUBLED. For
example, if you are only down 10 hours you get charged $13.00/hour, but if you’re down 10.5 hours you pay
$26.00/hour for every hour over 10.
At the end of each fining period, all down hours will carry over to the next fining period AND members will be fined
for their down hours (fines do not however carry over to the next contract period).
TERMINATION: If any CZar is down 15 HOURS, they will receive a conditional contract from the BSC and will have to
be down no more than -10 hours within 7 days. If they ever violate the conditional contract, they will be terminated
from the BSC. If you do receive a conditional contract you will also lose your preference/seniority point, and you
can not fall below 15 hours again or you will be permanently terminated from the BSC.
F.U.C.K. Parties: (Fornicating and Ubiquitously Cleaning Krackistan) Throughout the semester there will be at least 2
F.U.C.K. parties. These cleaning parties are run by the CZar of Labour and will usually correspond with the end of
fining periods. At these parties, areas of the house that are not usually cleaned will be cleaned in depth. F.U.C.K. party
hours will be given out based on work done rather than hours attended. A really disgusting job that is well done will
be worth more than the amount of time that is may have actually taken. Conversely, hours received for doing a
half-assed job will be less than actual time.
Taking a Vacation?
If you go out of town for 3 days or less, you are still responsible for your full 5 hours of workshift. If you go out of
town for more than 4 days and inform the CZars of Labour before leaving, you may be given a prorated workshift
reduction: Gone for 4 days, you owe 2 hours, 5 days, 1 hour, 6 days 30 min, and 7 days, no hours.
Extensions: The CZar of Labour does not (for any reason) grant fining period extensions for any czar. If due to
extenuating circumstances you need an extension, you may come to managers meeting to put it on the agenda for
council. Extensions will be granted at council’s discretion.
Paid Workshifts: Throughout the semester there will be paid workshift opportunities. These workshifts will be made
available to everyone in the house however (including compensated managers); they will be given on a first come first
serve basis. If you wish to do paid workshift that is not habitability related, I require that you go to pre-council and/or
council for approval before doing the shift because non-habitability related workshifts come out of the house
account.
There will be no inflated hours given (naked hours, etc.) for paid workshift hours. The pay rate is based off the CO
hourly compensation, which is $13 per hour. You must have already filled out an I-9 with CO to be eligible to receive
paid workshift.
CZar of Labour Availability
I will have regular office hours in the common room or in my room. You are always welcome to email me at the
workshift email : [email protected]. Allow up to 48 hours for me to respond. DO NOT email my personal email
(makes things difficult to organize).
CENTRAL LEVEL POLICY
I. General Provisions
a. Every room and board house member must do five (5) hours a week in workshifts.
b. The workshift rate of all co-op members will be set at the workshift rate set by Central Level each fiscal year. The houses
may not lower this rate.
c. Each house must have a workshift policy in writing.
d. It will take an absolute majority of the house population to overturn any house level workshift policy.
II. Workshift Fines
e. Workshift fines assessed by each house shall be submitted to the Bookkeeping Department for collection. All such fines
shall be placed in the unit’s Habitability Account and may only be used to address habitability issues and/or improve the
general condition of the unit, in accordance with the guidelines established for Habitability Accounts.
f. To overturn workshift fines, the member must win an absolute majority of the house population. If the house denies the
appeal, the member may then appeal to AdCom. However, the member must keep in mind that any workshift appeals to
AdCom will require a preponderance of evidence from the member (as determined by the AdCom Screening Committee) in
order to get a hearing. Disputes without evidence will be dismissed without a hearing.
g. Workshift managers may not dock members at room & board houses more than twice the amount of hours that they
missed for a blown shift (Example: For a blown 1 hour shift, the member will not receive that hour and may be docked up to
an additional 2 hours).
III. Workshift Termination
h. Workshift managers shall require any member who is down 10 hours to attend a house council or manager meeting to
discuss the issue and develop an action plan for making up hours in order to avoid termination proceedings.
i. Termination proceedings shall be initiated for any member who is down 15 or more workshift hours.
j. Workshift Managers shall be responsible for reporting this information to the central level. The Operations Assistant will
also be responsible for checking house workshift records each week to identify members that have exceeded the BSC down
hour limit.
k. When a member is identified as exceeding the BSC down hour limit, the following shall occur:
i. The Operations Assistant shall issue a 15-day notice of potential termination.
ii. The member will be issued a standardized conditional contract requiring that they get to 10 down hours or less within one
week and prohibiting the member from falling behind 15 or more hours for the remainder of their BSC tenure.
iii. Failure to comply with the terms of the conditional contract shall result in administrative termination of BSC membership.
l. The above process does not apply for boarders. The down hour limit for boarders is 10 hours; upon reaching this limit the
boarding contract will be cancelled.
IV. Withholding of Seniority Point
a. Any member who falls 15 or more hours down shall not receive their seniority point for that term.
