"Identity and Crisis: Syria and
Beyond"
Sunday, January 24, 2016; 7:00 PM – 8:00 PM
St. Vincent de Paul Parish Social Hall - 30525 8th Ave

Fr. David Nazar, S.J. will share a refugee story of
people that he knows, putting a human face on the big
numbers about which we keep hearing. He will give
us some insight to the cultural, religious, and political
situation in Syria. He will also speak about the Jesuits
in Syria and in Rome: what the Christian Church is
doing and is being asked to do in response to the
human drama being lived daily. A free will offering will
be taken to support the work of the Jesuits in Syria.
Fr. Nazar is a Canadian Jesuit. He is past provincial of the
Canadian Province and past superior of the Jesuits in the
Ukraine and Russia. Pope Francis recently appointed him
the Rector of The Pontifical Oriental Institute in Rome.
This school was founded in 1917 to be a center dedicated
to advanced studies on Eastern Christianity. The mission
of the Oriental Institute is to study, explain, and make
better known the life and tradition of these churches of
the East.

Pregnancy Aid
Many thanks from Pregnancy Aid to
all the parishioners who donated
diapers, sleepers, and other much
needed items during Advent. In
2015 we responded to 1,750
requests for help and gave out a thousand dozen
diapers and some 23,000 items of clothing, among
other things. Your generosity helps us meet these
continuing needs.

encourages parents to have their babies
baptized within the first few weeks of
life. The baptism preparation classes are
normally offered the 2nd and 3rd Mondays of the

Room in the parish office. Parents and godparents are
required to attend. The next classes will be February 8

We have many new CDs on display and many
new talks. We have the new missals for 2016
available for only $5. These sell out very
quickly, so be sure to get one before they're
gone. The CDs are only $3 each and make great gifts.
Thank you for supporting our program!

All Life is Precious! Participate
in 40 DAYS FOR LIFE
As a visible sign that all Life is precious
from conception to natural death, St.
Philomena Parish will make its
presence known at the Planned Parenthood Clinic in
Federal Way for five (5) consecutive Tuesdays beginning
February 16th from 9am until 3pm. We do this as a
visible sign of our love and support for LIFE. During two
hour time commitments we walk and pray for changes
of heart and to offer prayers for individuals who have
made decisions against life.
We are scheduled on the following Tuesdays: February
16, 23, March 01, 08, and 15.
We ask for a 2 hour commitment, if possible each of the
5 weeks, with groups of at least 2 people for each time
slot. Sign-up sheets can be found on the bulletin board
outside the main entrance of the Church, or you can
stop by or call the office to place your name on the
schedule. Please walk in witness of our God who created
us all in His image and likeness.
Signs and booklets will be provided at the site or you can
check with the Deacon for materials. Let us show by our
visible presence that we are committed to LIFE.
Shalom,
Deacon Jerry

Registration for the 2016-2017
school year will soon begin. St.
Philomena School offers many
options for your child’s
educational needs. Registration
opens January 31st, 2016.
We offer a 4 year old PreK
program. The St. Philomena School PreKindergarten
program is an early childhood development and
educational program that is designed to address and
enhance each child’s ability to make age-appropriate
progress in an appropriate range of settings in the
development of language and cognitive capabilities
and emotional, social, regulatory, and moral
capacities through education in basic skills. This
program is a precursor to Kindergarten and the goal is
to prepare students to meet Kindergarten
expectations. All students must be 4 by August 31,
2016 to be admitted into the program.
We also offer a 5 year old Kindergarten program.
Kindergarten is an important year, when students
transition from home, preschool or PreK and begin
their educational and spiritual experience. Our
mission is to teach, model, and promote Gospel
values in all areas of a balanced curriculum so that
the teachings of Christ become our focus and Christ
Himself, our constant point of reference. The St.
Philomena Kindergarten Program is a full day, five
day a week program and is integrated into the full
school calendar. All students must be 5 years old by
August 31, 2016 to be admitted into the program.
In addition we have 1st through 8th grade classes that
offer a strong Catholic and academically challenging
education, that not only includes the core subjects,
but religion on a daily basis and specialist classes
such as technology, PE and music.
St. Philomena School is having an Open House on
Sunday, Jan. 31st from 9:30 AM to 11:00 AM and
Wednesday, Feb. 3rd from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM and
from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM. Come check out our school
and imagine your child here!!
