Tikal, GUATEMALA
Tue - Wed, Nov. 01 – 02, Westin Camino Real Tikal
Board your luxury B-757 Private Jet, bound for the Guatemalan jungle in
Central America. Arrive at Flores (Tikal) and transfer to your hotel situated
inside the Cerro CahuíNatural Reserve, on the banks of Lake Petén Itzá.
Take a private boat cruise on the lake and attend a lecture on Mayan
civilization by a local archaeologist.
The lost Mayan city of Tikal, rediscovered in 1848, is one of the largest
archaeological sites of the pre-Columbian Maya civilization. Tikal was one of the most powerful kingdoms of the ancient
Maya. It was a wealthy metropolis with over 100,000 inhabitants, many of whom were astronomers, priests, mathematicians,
civic leaders and artists. Today Tikal is among the world’s greatest travel wonders. It has been designated a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.
Spend the day visiting the Tikal National Park’s monuments. Begin exploring the Great Plaza, one of the most meticulously
excavated areas. See the Temple of the Giant Jaguar which rises to 170 feet. The tallest standing temple in the Maya world is
Temple IV which is 212 feet. There are over 3,000 structures, including great market buildings, plazas, palaces, the main
acropolis, towering pyramids, and a series of reservoirs. Not only was Tikal a major Mayan religious center, it was also an
administrative center, as you will see by designs on the Mayan Art. City administrators, the royal family and priest, were all
situated close to the center of the ruins. For a period of several hundreds of years from approximately 500-900A.D. the
Mayan people flourished in Tikal, until the mysterious collapse of the city and civilization. Visit the Tikal Museum, which
contains material discovered during the excavation of Tikal. The jungle is alive with amazing wildlife, from spider monkeys to
the elusive jaguar. Bird enthusiasts can also enjoy a guided birding walk to search for the large-billed toucans, brilliantly
plumed parrots, and macaws. In the evening enjoy a festive dinner party accompanied by a lively Marimba band.
Cuzco and Machu Picchu, PERU
Thu – Sat, Nov. 03 – 05, Hotel Monasterio
Board your Private Jet and fly to Lima, Peru. On arrival, board a local flight to Cuzco, a
city located high in the Andes with a unique blend of Spanish and Inca cultures.
Transfer to your historic hotel, formerly a convent, where oxygenated rooms are
reserved to help you adjust to the altitude.
Take a luxury rail excursion to Machu Picchu onboard the Orient Express Hiram
Bingham train, named after the explorer who discovered the fascinating remains of
the Inca citadel in July 1911. This is the most luxurious way to travel between Cusco
and Machu Picchu. The carriages are elegantly decorated in the style of the 1920’s
Pullman trains. Enjoy a wonderful brunch on board before arriving at the foot of the
Machu Picchu ruins to begin your discovery of this ancient city, built entirely of stone blocks. The entire citadel was built with
masterful precision, complete with houses, temples, warehouses, a central square, and agricultural terraces cut into the side
of the mountain. Return to Cuzco on the Hiram Bingham train, while a gourmet dinner is served on board.
As an alternative to Cuzco and Machu Picchu, a visit to Trujillo may be substituted. See the temples and rich burial
chambers of the ancient Moche and Chimu. Visit Chan Chan, capital of the Kingdom of Chimu, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
