Volume 6, Spring
March ~ May 2015
It’s Spring and the OWLS are coming!
Newport Public Library will be hosting the “Birds of Prey” program from the
Outer Banks Wildlife Shelter on Tuesday, June 30 at 10:00 am in the children’s
library. The 2015 Summer Reading Program theme is “Every Hero Has a Story”
and this wildlife program and its’staff are a large part of our community heroes.
The executive director of OWLS, Trish Slape, will bring a hawk and a screech owl
so the children can learn about them and enjoy a close-up look at these very special animals.

The program will also include a fund drive for OWLS, which is a nonprofit organization with no federal funding. Many items are in need and a box for the donations will be in the library lobby. A comprehensive list can be found on the
shelter website, www.owlsonline.org, and at the library. This program is an important feature of our summer reading experience and will enable our children to
become community heroes themselves by helping local injured wildlife.
The OWLS wish list includes cleaning supplies, such as trash bags, hand soap,
Pine Sol, unscented liquid laundry detergent and bleach, and tissue/toilet paper
with no lotion. The clinic needs include distilled water, heating pads without automatic shutoff, reptile UVA/UVB light bulbs, dry deck mats, pine/aspen shavings,
Pedialyte and cable ties. Specific animal needs are black oil or striped sunflower
seeds, Science Diet Feline Original Formula, Iams dog food, pond pellet fish food,
premium wild bird seed, rabbit pellets, raw nuts, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, raw
meat and whole small bait fish. Monetary donations are always needed and welcome and can be mailed to 100 Wildlife Way, Newport, NC 28570.
The Friends of the Newport Public Library will host a book signing on Friday,
April 17, 2015 at 7:00 pm in the fellowship hall of St. James Methodist Church in
Newport. The featured book is "The Never-Ending War" by co-authors Ray and
Laura Clark of New Bern, NC. Mr. Clark speaks to audiences from a patient's perspective on the unseen scars of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The book has
been endorsed by Lt. Col. Oliver North as "a must read for every veteran." For
more information, go to www.theneverendingwar.com.
Smokey Bear makes a return visit to the library!
To launch our Summer Reading Program about heroes and to celebrate June as
“National Camping Out Month”, forest ranger Brian Swanson from Beaufort, NC,
will visit the children’s library on Tuesday, June 9 at 10:00 am. Ranger Swanson
will present a fire prevention program, teaching the children how to take care of
the forest and especially how to prevent wildfires. Accompanying Ranger Swanson will be his assistant and our local hero, Smokey Bear, who will visit with the
children and take pictures with him.
