FROM THE PASTOR
This Sunday, September 11th, is a special day in our church, in our community and in our
nation.
This Sunday, our church is joining together with several others in our community for
Hands On Hartselle. This is an opportunity for many of our members to become engaged in a
morning of mission work to help some of those in this area who are less fortunate than are we.
It will begin at our CrossTies Worship Service where we will have a brief commissioning act to
send forth the ones who will then go to help in a variety of ways. They will return here at 12:30
pm for a meal and a time of sharing experiences. Some of the smaller United Methodist
Churches in our area are calling off their morning worship services for their members to
participate. We will not do that here at First Church. However, I am very pleased to report
that a number of our Sunday School classes will be involved in this important mission effort. In
addition, our church will provide nursery care for the younger children those parents are
involved. If you would like to be a part of this mission endeavor, I urge you to contact Ragan
Chastain ([email protected] or 256-606-4865) to learn more about what you can do.
Next, this Sunday is Grandparents Day. There is nothing in the world like being a
grandparent. I know because I am one. Grandparents fill a vital role in our society today. In
fact, in an increasing number of situations, grandparents have become the primary care-givers
for their grandchildren. In the church, one of the most vital roles for grandparents is the
transmission of the faith from one generation to another. While this is the primary
responsibility of the parents; if they do not fulfill this responsibility then the grandparents
must. For grandparents, nothing is more important than our grandchildren so there should be
nothing more important to us than to see that our beloved grandchildren come to know Jesus
Christ as their Lord and Savior. This Sunday we will recognize the vital role that grandparents
do or should play in the lives of their grandchildren.
This Sunday is also the Fifteenth Anniversary of 9/11. It was a day of horror such as this
country had never experienced. People had sought to attack this country and bring us down;
but yet again, they failed. The twin towers did fall that day and some three thousand people
lost their lives. But America still stands as strong as ever. However, let us use this
anniversary to take stock of where we are as a nation and what it is that truly makes us truly
great.
This Sunday is a special day. Make sure you make it special for you and your family.
God bless you always!

CHANGE OF DATE
THURSDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY
Broken and Blessed by Jessica LaGrone
“How God Used One Imperfect Family to Change the World”
Resumes September 15th
10:00 a.m. • Room 208
Every family since the beginning of time has been both
broken and blessed. In the six-week study, Jessica LaGrone
takes us on a journey through Genesis, a book that tells the
story of one perfectly imperfect family—from Adam and Eve
all the way to Joseph and his brothers. Despite their
brokenness, God chose to love and bless this family so that
their blessings might overflow. As we get to know each
generation, noting both the good and bad traits that were
passed down, we will see that God worked for good in their
lives for the good of the world. And we will see that God
wants to do the same in our own imperfect families, bringing
blessing from brokenness. Whether you’re single, married, or
divorced—with or without children or grandchildren—you
are an important part of God’s family meant to bless the
world.
As you make your way through the study, you’ll discover
that when God wants to change the world, He starts with a
family; and when God wants to change a family, He starts
with one person. You will be challenged to be the change
agent in your own family, just as Joseph was in his. And you
will know with confidence that every family can be used by
God to bring blessing in a hurting and broken world.
Jessica LaGrone is Associate Pastor at The Woodlands
United Methodist Church in The Woodlands, Texas.
CANS FOR KAYLEIGH
A large container will be placed in the church parking lot
(on Hwy 36/Main Street near the fire station) to collect
aluminum cans. There are at least seven other churches

an elementary school student who is undergoing major
medical treatment. Please bring your cans beginning,
September 11th through Sunday, September 25th.
You can also take your cans or other metals directly to
N & W Metal, Inc., 4800 Old Hwy 31, Decatur, AL, 35603.
They are open Monday—Friday from 7:00—3:30. If you drop
