CLASS
Display items that can help students estimate and compare weights using grams and
kilograms. You might display: one nickel (about 5 grams), 100 small paper clips
(about 50 grams), an orange (about 150 grams), 10 full-sized pencils (about 275 grams),
a loaf of bread (about 500 grams, or half a kilogram), and a 1-liter bottle of water
(about 1 kilogram).
Place 100 paper clips in a plastic bag. Hold up an orange and the bag containing
100 paper clips. This bag has 100 paper clips and weighs about 50 grams.
Do you think this orange is lighter or heavier than the paper clips?

do you think that means?

Twos, Fives, and Tens
“I think it’s lighter because there are more paper clips.”
“I think it’s heavier because a paper clip is very light.”
Hold up an orange and a bottle of water. This bottle of water weighs 1 kilogram.
Do you think it is lighter or heavier than the orange? After students have made
their estimates, place one object on each side of the pan balance. Which is heavier, the
bottle of water or the orange?
Place the orange, pencils, bottle of water, nickel, and paper clips on a desk. We are
going to estimate the weight of these objects and put them in order from lightest
to heaviest. After we estimate each weight, we will use this spring scale to weigh
the object and see how close our estimates are to the actual weights.

PR AC TICE
In the Activity 20 Master, students are asked to tell if an object should be weighed
in grams or in kilograms.
