Throne Instructions Supplies*: •2-3 corrugated cardboard sheets 48” x 72” •7 rolls of gold duct tape, or 2-3 cans of gold spray paint •2 yards of red velvet fabric •Sewing kit •Large sheet of insolation board •High back dining room chair without arm rests •Utility knife •Heavy duty stapler Directions: 1. Find a chair for the throne. Suggested chair is one without arm rests, has a tall flat back, and that can have the seat unscrewed for reupholstering. See Figure 1 for an example. 2. Since chair measurements vary, use the dimensions provided and adjust for the measurements of the piece you will need to make. 3. First make the back of the chair. The height of the back will be 30” tall, and the width should equal the chair measurement (a) plus an additional 16” as shown in Figure 2. 4. Use Figure 3 as guidance for how the back piece should appear. Draw onto the cardboard and cut out using a utility knife. (For safety purposes, we recommend wearing leather gloves when using the utility knife. Never leave the utility knife where children can pick it up.) Rest the cut out of the “back rest” in place and measure the back of the chair from the top of the “back rest” to the floor so that x+y=total height as shown in Figure 4. (x) (y) Figure 4 6. To make the back, lay out the “back rest” onto a second sheet of cardboard and trace it. Remove the “back rest”. Add the length (y) from Step 4 as shown in Figure 5. 7. Cut out “chair back.” (x) 8. Cut 3 strips of 4” x 48” from the cardboard for the edges of the chair. (Note: You may or may not need to cut more depending on the size of your chair.) 9. Place the “chair back” on a flat surface and place long strips of duct tape along its entire edge as shown in Figure 6. 10.Tape the cut strips from step 7 onto the “chair back” as shown in Figure 7. (y) Figure 5 Figure 6 11.Tape the “back rest” to the other side of the strips so that you now have a hollow frame. Place the frame on the chair. Refer to Figure 8 for measurements. Measurement may vary from chair to chair, make any needed adjustments. 13.Create a cardboard rectangle by measuring the widest distance between the front legs to create side (d) of the rectangle. Measure the height underneath the chair cushion and the floor to create side (e) of the rectangle. See Figure 9 as reference. Cut out the rectangle and put to the side. Figure 8 14.Unscrew the bottom of seat and reupholster with the red velvet using a heavy duty stapler. Reattach the seat to the chair once finished. 15.Create a stencil that is slightly smaller than the one made in step 3. This will be used to create the “cushion” of the back rest. See Figure 10 for reference. Figure 9 16.Using the stencil, trace the “cushion” piece onto the piece of insulation board. Cut out the piece using a utility knife. 17.Cover the front of the “cushion” piece with red velvet and staple onto the back. 18.To use as little tape as possible, only tape the part of the front where the cushion will be placed. Tape everything else entirely. Figure 10 19.Once finished, assemble the chair using gold duct tape. Figures 11-13 will show which pieces to assemble first and where to place the tape. Figure 14 21.For the decorative elements, use left over pieces of cardboard and foam board. Cover in gold duct tape. See Figures 15 and 16 for ideas.
