Rounding and Money
Dear Parents,
Important
Vocabulary
 rounding– a way to estimate
numbers by focusing on a
specific place value
 estimate(v) - to find out
about how much
 sum - the answer when
numbers are added
together
 difference– the answer
when one number is
subtracted from another
At the beginning of this unit your child will learn to estimate
sums and differences by rounding numbers. They will also learn to
use estimates to check that actual answers are reasonable. Comparing using >, <, and = will be found in this unit as well, but that is a
review skill for us. In this unit your child will also be using money.
They will compare the values of a collection of coins and bills, act
out making a purchase by counting the exact amount, and find out
how much change they should receive. Finally, later in the unit your
child will solve word problems that contain hidden, extra, or not
enough info. They solve problems with two or more steps and learn
to analyze information when it is presented in tables and graphs.

Ready to get some money? I mean...ready to count with money?
Sorry, we can’t pay you, but in this unit we will pretend to go shopping. This unit is just in time for Christmas because it is important
to know what to do in shopping situations. There will be a lot of adding and subtracting in this unit, but you will find the problems easier
once you learn how to round. There are also a few word problems in
this unit, but I know that you have the power! Get ready for an important unit that might make you feel more grown up after we finish.
