Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph
Behold, the angel of the Lord appeared to
him in a dream and said, "Joseph, son of
David, do not be afraid to take Mary your
wife into your home. For it is through the
Holy Spirit that this child has been
conceived in her. She will bear a son and
you are to name him Jesus, because he
will save his people from their sins."
- Mt 1:20-21
When Herod had died, behold, the angel of
the Lord appeared in a dream to Joseph in
Egypt and said, "Rise, take the child and
his mother and go to the land of Israel, for
those who sought the child's life are
dead." He rose, took the child and his
mother, and went to the land of Israel.
- Mt 2:19-21
- Mt 2, 19-21

PASTORAL CARE
Christmas…A Time to Give Back!
This week, as we celebrate Christmas, let us pause for a
moment to reflect on the reason for this most sacred day.
Yes, this is a time to spend with family and friends,
celebrating timeless traditions, great food and exchanging
gifts. This is most likely the only time all year when we
celebrate a birthday and receive more gifts than the
person whose birth we celebrate! But then, wasn’t that
God’s gift to all of humankind in the first place? God sent
us his only son for our salvation!
This is the season when we pause to consider the events of
the past year and to reflect on how we might make a
positive impact in the New Year.
We at Holy Family have been so very blessed in this past
year through the dedication and selfless acts of generosity
from people sharing their time and talents, people who
are dedicated to living out the Gospel message. This is
true discipleship and it is alive at Holy Family Catholic
Community!
As we look to the coming year, we pray for good health,
happiness and joy throughout the year. These are gifts
from God. What then are the gifts that we can give back?
How can we begin to offer ourselves in service to the
Lord, to live out the message of the Gospel?
Allow me to make some suggestions for what may be in
your 2014 Bucket List.

Weekly Justice Challenge
December 22, 2013—4th Week of Advent/Christmas
Justice Challenge: We celebrate the
Incarnation this week—God taking on human
flesh and becoming one of us. This is the
ultimate act of solidarity. Jesus embraced
humanity in all of its joy and in all of its
suffering. He truly became “one of us.” We
are called to be one with each other as Jesus is one with
us. Your challenge this week is to ask yourself which part
of God’s community you are disconnected from. With
whom does God want you to stand in solidarity—locally or
globally? Say a prayer every night this week for this person
or group of persons. Copyright © Center for Ministry Development,

Holy Family Ministry Connection: As part of Holy Family
Catholic Community, we are all part of God’s community.
This parish began by the merging of six parishes rich in
ethnic and cultural traditions. We are a diverse community
of God’s people called to solidarity by reaching across the
aisle in fellowship to our brothers and sisters in Christ,
regardless of ethnicity, financial status or family style.
How will you share the joy of this season with all God’s
people?

Communal life and missionary spirit are the final two
dimensions of a mature faith life. We are not the Church
in isolation, but only when we are in communion with
each other. Both our personal and our spiritual growth
must take place with the Body of Christ in order for us to
be all God intended us to be. Visible signs of communal
life include interpersonal relationships and being active in
our civic society; marrying and raising a family and sharing
in the work of the parish. One final way we can truly live
in community is to foster the ecumenical movement and
promote solidarity among all God’s people. When we go
forth into the larger community and evangelize, as part of
our baptismal calling, we evidence the missionary spirit
that is part of a mature faith life. God calls all of us—
ordained, married lay, single lay, religious—to personally
go forth; that is, to be apostles to all the corners of the
Earth. Before we can motivate and speak to others,
however, we must first be evangelized ourselves.
(From Our Hearts Were Burning Within Us, USCCB, A Pastoral Plan for
Adult Faith Formation)
Please Pray for Vocations
Our Holy Father, Pope Francis, shares with us the great
importance of praying for vocations: "Behind and before
every vocation to the priesthood or to the consecrated
life, there is always the strong and intense prayer of
someone: a grandmother, a grandfather, a mother, a
father, a community. Vocations are born in prayer and
from prayer; and only through prayer can they persevere
and bear fruit."
Dear God,
Help us live out our mission in the Church.
Help all your people to know their vocation in life
and to prepare for it. Give those whom you call to be
priests and religious, the grace to respond generously and
to persevere faithfully.
Bountiful God, open our hearts to recognize your holy
calling.
Bless our Church with devoted married couples, committed
single men and women and dedicated priests, sisters,
brothers and deacons. Guide those who are discerning,
how best to serve you.
With your favor, we set out to proclaim your reign through
Jesus, your Beloved Son, in the power of the Holy Spirit.
Amen.

Christmas Seating
One of the great joys of the Christmas Holy Day is getting
families together from near and far. It’s wonderful when
they can
attend Mass
together as
well. As we all
know, THE
most crowded
Masses are the
earliest ones
on Christmas
Eve. Our
ushers are put
in the “no-winsituation” of trying to find seating for parishioners when
individuals have staked out entire pews, “saving them for
family members.” This is unfair for all those people who
come early and have to stand anyway. Please note, at all
of our Christmas Masses this year, it will be strictly –
FIRST COME, FIRST SEATED – meaning no one will be
allowed to save seats.
Please, instruct your family
members accordingly or
consider coming to Mass at
10:30 pm, Midnight or on
Christmas morning itself
when there’s room for
everyone to be seated.
Low-gluten Hosts Available
Holy Family now has low-gluten hosts (.001% or 37
micrograms) available for parishioners who have wheat
related allergies or
intolerances. If you or your
child have not been receiving
communion because of gluten
levels in the hosts you can now
request low-gluten hosts at
each of our worship sites.
There is no such thing as a “no
-gluten” host since the Church
requires that hosts used at
Catholic Masses must contain some wheat. However the
low-gluten hosts we are using have been approved by the
Archbishop and recommended by the Catholic Celiac
Society.
Those who cannot tolerate a whole host can ask the
Communion Minister for only ½ or ¼ host at the time of
reception of Communion. Those who cannot physically
tolerate even this amount of gluten can request a low
gluten host before Mass using the procedure below.
Procedure: Please stop in at the sacristy before Mass and
ask the sacristan to allow you to put a low-gluten host in a
special container which they will place on the altar.
Please do so 15-20 minutes early since once Mass begins
the sacristan no longer has access to these hosts.
The low-gluten host you have placed in the container will
be consecrated by the priest at the Mass you are attending.
Reception: At Communion time, please join the line
for the Priest-celebrant of the Mass. He will be holding the
container of low-gluten hosts. When you approach him,
after you bow to the Blessed Sacrament, request a lowgluten host. The priest will then open the container and
allow you to take the host yourself (so there is no crosscontamination with wheat) and receive communion.
Please, if you have not placed a low-gluten host in the
container before Mass, do not request one. The only hosts
in the container at communion time will be the ones
placed in the container by the individuals who request them.
