Primorsky Aquarium is
the first largest aquarium in Russia
•

The Primorsky Aquarium has 57,400 m2 in area
including 7,400 m2 of the scientific-and-adaptation
building floor space and 37,700 m2 of the main
aquarium with dolphinarium building floor space.
Water total volume in the main Aquarium building is
24,000 tons including 14,000 tons of the dolphinarium.
Primorsky Aquarium will act as research, educational,
and cultural-and-educational establishment.
A number of leading companies of Russia, Taiwan,
and Japan takes part in design and construction of the
Aquarium complex.

Location of Primorsky Aquarium
on Zhitkov Peninsula, Russky Island
The Aquarium is located on Russky Island which is a
part of Vladivostok urban district separated from it by Eastern
Bosporus Strait.
Russky Island hosted APEC economic leaders’ summit
held in the fall of 2012 .
At the present, Russky Island has a new-built University
complex
operating
and
developing
recreation-andentertainment area intended for local residents and tourists
(mainly from other Russia regions, China, and Japan)

A bridge cross Eastern Bosporus
strait is connecting Vladivostok
city and Russky Island from 2012
The Eastern Bosporus bridge crossing is one of
the world’s largest cable-stayed bridges.
• Central span is 1,104 m
• Bridge crossing total length is 1,885 m
• Total length with trestleworks is 3,100 m
• Width of carriageway is 23.8 m
• Height of bridge pylons is 320 m
• Underbridge clearance is 70 m
Distance of Primorsky Aquarium from
Vladivostok historical center is 11.7 km by auto-roads
and 21 km along a straight line.
Water way is also available for tourists:
Primorsky Aquarium has own mooring complex for
recreational crafts, passenger liners and cargo ships.
Population of Vladivostok city is 600 thousand;
in Russia, about one million live within 100-km radius
at least; population of Primorsky Krai is 1,95 mln.
Shortest distance along a straight line to China is 60
km and to Japan is 650 km.

is in construction preparedness for September 2013
Primorsky Aquarium includes a Research-and-adaptation building that intended for providing adaptation,
quarantining, treatment, and rehabilitation of aquatic organisms for Prymorsky Aquarium.
The research-and-adaptation building came into operation in 2012:
Total area: 7,440 m2
Total volume of water: 1,400 m3
At present, the Research-and-adaptation building is operated by Research and Educational Centre
“Primorsky Aquarium”, Far Eastern Branch of Russia Academy of Sciences (Aquarium of FEB RAS) and also
used for FEB RAS research activities.

Main areas of scientific
and educational activities
• Development of scientific basis and modern technologies for management and breeding threatened
and endangered species of marine biota;

Reproductive biology of threatened and endangered species;
•
Research in the area of the marine animals’ physiology, ethology, and veterinary;
•
Studying the marine animals’ higher nervous activity and behavior;
• Research in the area of molecular genetics, biochemistry, and biotechnology of the threatened and
endangered species of the marine animals;
•
Organizing studies, lectures, and practical classes for students and postgraduate students of related
specialties of the regional higher education institutions including Far Eastern Federal University;
•
Organizing lectures and practical training classes for school children of the region;
• Environmental education programs for population including pre-university and pre-school
environmental education programs and scientific-and-educational programs.

Dolphinarium Characteristics (aqua-stadium)

dolphin therapy department for treatment sessions including special pool to admit the disabled

separate diving service for the Aquarium to maintain tanks and carry out technical support of scientific experiments in the main tank
and large tanks.

“Primorsky Aquarium”
Research and Educational Centre “Primorsky Aquarium” is composed of group of buildings and facilities with a
total area of 2,677 m2 required for safe and uninterrupted functioning, as below:
• water treatment plant with area of 987 m2;
• refrigeration supply station with area of 676 m2;
• water intake running out into open sea by more than 100 m;
• biological treatment plant with area of 192 m2;
• complex of voltage transforming plants with total area of 448 m2;
• ticket counter pavilion with area of 406 m2;
• promenade area with complex of water features of 3 ha in area;
• construction surrounding the sea- and fresh water reservoirs, with area of 987 m2;
• more than 50 auxiliary facilities.

Composition of Research and Educational Centre
“Primorsky Aquarium”
Apart from the above-listed main objects, Primorsky Aquarium have 60 auxiliary facilities intended
to provide uninterrupted operation. Complex of listed below engineering systems will provide functioning
Aquarium’s tanks in amounts of 146:
• electrical power system with total cable length of about 50 km;
• ventilation system, heat supply system, and air condition system providing inhabitants of tropical waters and
cool seas with required conditions;
• life support systems for aquatic organisms;
• water supply system providing water filling and timely changing in amounts of 24,000 m3;
• automation and dispatch systems allowing remote readjusting the engineering systems to provide required
operation conditions.
Maintenance of the complex should be performed by the personnel highly qualified and specially
trained with necessary skills who understand engineering equipment, utilities, and systems.

Prospective development of
Research and Educational Centre “Primorsky Aquarium”
Prospective development of the recreation-and-entertainment area in Russky Island in the immediate
neighborhood of Primorsky Aquarium is suggested for to build a covered aquapark, an outdoor
oceanarium for Far Eastern seas dwellers representing an enclosed bay with a complex for keeping the
marine mammals and an arena for show of them), a hotel, the birth for motor boats and yachts, diving
center, winter storage area for vessels, museum complex based on old fortification structures, underwater
restaurant, and underwater hotel.

At present, work is conducted to choose a potential business partner having had work
experience in operating the aquariums and being able to provide effective exploitation of the
Primorsky Aquarium and organize its business activity with account of possible
participation in development of tourism-and-entertainment infrastructure of the Aquarium.
For effective exploitation of the
Prymorsky Aquarium, a concept of
dividing the property complex into two
parts is suggested, as follows:
1) for realization of the scientific

If the company can not carry out full service, proposals on carrying out certain types of activity
including those from above listed should be given.
