Colonoscopy Preparation Instructions
Please follow the instructions below carefully.

PEGLYTE - in sachet or bottle form, available over-the-counter at most drugstores
Avoid as much as possible: nuts, seeds, or skins in your diet one week before the test
All liquid diet one day before the test
Someone to drive you home after the test
Health card
ONE WEEK BEFORE THE TEST
* Avoid foods with nuts, seeds, or skins (no multigrain bread, tomatoes, strawberries, beans, etc.).
* Stop Aspirin and Iron supplements one week before your test.
* NOTE: If you take any blood thinners such as Warfarin (Coumadin), Pradaxa, Plavix, or Brilinta; you must be seen in a
consultation by a physician at our clinic before booking your appointment.
* You should continue your other prescription medications.
ONE DAY BEFORE THE TEST
* NO SOLID FOOD. Clear fluids only.
* No RED liquids - red stains the colon and cannot be distinguished from blood
Acceptable Fluids
Clear tea (no milk), ginger ale, apple juice, Jell-O, Sprite, etc. You may drink blue, yellow or green-coloured
PowerAde or Gatorade.
All laxatives can cause dehydration so it is important to drink plenty of liquids that have some salt/electrolytes
in them like Gatorade or PowerAde.
Do NOT just drink plain water.
PEGLYTE BOWEL PREPARATION (TO BE MIXED THE DAY BEFORE TEST)
IF YOU PURCHASED BOTTLE FORM – FILL UP THE BOTTLE TO THE 4 LITRE MARK WITH WATER
IF YOU PURCHASED SACHET FORM – EACH SACHET IS TO BE MIXED IN 1 (ONE) LITRE OF WATER
* At 5 pm the day before test: Drink 2 litres of the solution. Drink one glass every ten minutes until you have finished it
and do not take longer than 75 minutues to drink the 2 litres. It usually takes one to two hours before you have your first
bowel motion. Gravol may be taken if you feel nauseous while taking the laxatives.
* IF YOUR APPOINTMENT IS BEFORE 11 AM THE NEXT DAY, drink the remaining 2 litres at 11 PM as you did the first
2 litres. Drinking the second dose late at night is necessary for best results.
* IF YOUR APPOINTMENT IS AT OR AFTTER 11 AM THE NEXT DAY, drink the remaining 2 litres at 5 AM ON THE
DAY OF TEST. Waking up early to drink the second dose is necessary for best results.
THE DAY OF THE TEST



NO SOLID FOOD. Clear fluids only.
Stop all fluids 2.5 hours before the test. This includes no smoking, no mints/candy and no chewing gum.
Please dress casually and comfortably (t-shirt and sweat pants instead of jeans or pants).
Do not take any insulin, sugar-lowering tablets, or water pills the morning of the test. You can restart these
medications after the test. But, take your blood pressure medication with a few sips of water 2-3 hrs. before arrival time.
NOTE: Please provide 5 business days’ notice to change or cancel appointment – otherwise a $200 cancellation / noshow charge will apply.

PEGLYTE is covered for seniors (age 65 and over). Prescriptions are available upon request.
If you have had difficulty taking PEGLYTE in the past, or if you cannot find it in your neighbourhood
drugstore, alternate laxatives include Pico Salax, Purgodan, Bi-PegLyte, or Moviprep.
