Dates and times maybe subject to change.
Dear Parents,
Where: Meet in School/ Church
Carpark for your mystery instructions.
School Board
We congratulate Debra FairbanksSmith as new parent representative
on the School Board, and also David
Drawwater for re-nomination and
continuing for another term. These two
join myself, Fr. Kym Spurling, Gianna
Procino (Chair), Megan Devenish
(Treasurer), Caroline Batty (Secretary),
Carolyn Sawtell, Vanessa Blacker/
Gary Douglass (Staff reps) as members
on the 2016 School Board. I thank
these people for their generosity of
time and commitment to St. Monica’s.
I know that these members would be
most willing to hear from you, discuss
their role and our developing plans for
2016.
Car Rally/Family Picnic
As advertised, we will be
having our inaugural Car Rally/
Family picnic on Sunday April
3rd. A little information for you
Start time: 3rd April — 10am
Sunday Once at Picnic area, stay as
long as you like!
Who: all families, their friends and
relatives are welcome! Staff will be
joining in the fun!
What to bring: Picnic lunch, chairs,
drinks etc. There are bbq facilities at
site and a great playground. There is
a grassed area for ball games nearby,
parents will need to supervise these.
How much: $10:00 a car to go
towards sun/ rain shelter at back gate.
What in?: Have you a fancy car?
Maybe ‘dress up’ your family car? Or
just come in your car!
How does it work? You’ll get a list
of instructions and clues to direct you
to a beautiful picnic area/ playground.
The kids, in the back seat, will find
things, solve clues along the way.
There’ll be a ‘spotto’ type quiz for
the younger ones and some harder
questions for our older children. (ie
kids beautifully occupied in back seat
solving clues to get in the lucky draw!)
How long: By navigating the route,
collecting important information and
objects.. you’ll be there in about 45
mins.
What if I get lost/ just want
to go straight to the site? Fine,
along with instructions there will be
a sealed envelope with destination
inside. Those who get to destination
without opening the envelope go into a
lucky draw.
Prizes: for best dressed car, fanciest
car, lucky draw for kids spotto and
quiz.
What then? We are planning to
have some interesting/ classic cars
on display and you may want to add
yours to this, or get photos of the family
with the cars?

Then you can enjoy the day. Please note that parent/
caregivers will be responsible for their children at all
times. Whilst we have let the Council know, this will not
be an exclusive St Monica’s site. Come as you would any
family picnic.
WEEK TWO OF PROJECT COMPASSION
HUM NOY’S STORY
This week’s story is about a project in Laos that supports
children with disability like Hum Noy. The project wouldn’t
be possible without money raised by Caritas’ Project
Compassion.
Donations: If you have a business that you would like
us to promote before, on the day and after to our school
community and would like to donate anything to our gift
baskets, please let Annette know at front office.

come from:
Reflections:
Hum Noy’s mother Duangmala, wanted her son to have
access to the additional support he needed so he could live
life to the full.
How does your child’s school support children with
additional needs?
Inclusion is a core principal of our Catholic schools. What
does inclusion mean to you?
In what ways have you had to access additional support for
your child? How did you feel if that support was difficult to
access?
Consider this:
What would it mean to you if you couldn’t access the basic
services your child needed to live life to the full?
Family conversations:
Talk with your child about times they’ve needed extra support
with something and how that’s made them feel. Did they get
the help they needed? How did that make them feel?
How can we help all people feel included?
What does it mean to be included? What are some of
the reasons why people aren’t always included? Can you
think of ways to make sure people are included in different
activities?
Pray together:
Special prize if you can match the teachers/staff
car pictures with the teachers/staff!
God Bless
Greg Parker
Heavenly Father, we thank you for your promise of living life
fully. May we each flourish and grow daily. We give thanks
for Hum Noy and the improvements he has made since
joining his school. May he continue to learn. Amen.
Plan together:
Consider some ideas for a family fundraiser for Caritas

A note went home yesterday regrading Sports
Day. For those notes that didn’t make home here
is a copy. I have also put in a map of the oval. A
booklet will go out to families later next week.
If the weather is too hot it will be postponed. You will be
notified by the School Stream App. If you haven’t put
it on your phone the directions are at the bottom of the
newsletter.
As you are aware the whole school is participating in
Sports Day on Thursday 10th March at 9.00am this is a
fun event which is compulsory for all students to attend.
Here are a few hints and reminders for the day, but feel
free to approach your class teacher should you have any
questions. A timetable will be sent out to each family prior
to Sports Day.
Arrival
Parents will be expected to take students straight to St
Alban’s Reserve – Chester Ave, Clearview, and all students
must arrive no later than 8.40am and then sign in. Before
school care is available in OHSC, which will include
transport to the Sports Day with parent’s written permission,
but bookings through the Office or OHSC are essential.
After School Care is not available on the day.
Students are asked to locate their house team and take
with them their hat and named drink bottle. Students are
to remain with their house teams and designated teachers
for the opening ceremony. Once the Sports Day events
commence children will move into their Year Level (R – 2)

arrive) and wigs. Hats must still be worn and sunscreen.
There is a teacher allocated to each house team and upon

Food and drinks
Children will need to bring along food for recess and
lunch breaks as well as plenty of water. The P & F will
also provide a fruit station with oranges as a treat for
the children. There will also be a sausage sizzle van
available should parents wish to purchase a sausage/
vegie pattie for their child. Children are permitted to
sit with their parents during lunch time once they have
notified their group leader. An announcement will be
made at the start of lunch, (approx. 1pm).
It is anticipated that Sports Day will finish at 2.45pm. To
ensure the safety of your child, students will need to be
signed out by the same teacher listed above at the end of
the day.
This is a huge event for students and they have been
practising hard during our Sport lessons. We are very
excited about sharing the day with all our families,
especially those of you attending your first St Monica’s
Sports Day. You may also wish to take up the opportunity
to allow your child to sleep in on Friday and bring them
to school at 11.20am after recess. If this is not convenient
for your family teachers will still be in class as usual.
Looking forward to seeing you there.

‘A Nourishing Morning’ we felt it only just that we share with you a recipe
from its pages! Behold your ultimate breakfast on the run or morning tea
snack - these guys will become a fabulous staple in your home. Whip them
up on the weekend and you can be rest assured you’re in safe hands for last
minute dashes out the door.
INGREDIENTS
1 cup pistachios, finely chopped
1 cup dried cranberries, chopped
1 cup medjool dates, pitted, soaked in 2 cups filtered water for 1 hour
¾ cup quinoa flakes
½ cup mixed seeds (we used sunflower and pumpkin), plus extra for sprinkling
¼ cup unsweetened coconut flakes
1 tablespoon coconut oil, melted
1 teaspoon vanilla powder or essence
METHOD
1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees C. Line a 20cmx25cm baking dish with baking paper.
2. Drain dates of excess water. Place into a small food processor with the coconut oil and combine to form a smooth
paste.
3. Into a mixing bowl place the pistachios, cranberries, quinoa flakes, mixed seeds, coconut flakes and vanilla. Add the
date paste and mix well.
4. Turn the mixture into the prepared baking tray. Press down evenly and firmly. Using a knife, scour lines into the slice to
mark each piece. Sprinkle with a few extra seeds. Bake for 40 minutes or until slightly crispy around the edges, yet still
moist. Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to two weeks.

END OF DAY PICKUP
Could families please be aware of parking when
collecting children from the Brunswick Street end of the
school. We have had reports that whilst parents are
queuing to collect their children, neighbour’s driveways
are still being obstructed. This is not only illegal, but very
frustrating for our neighbours who need easy access
to their properties. Walkerville Council inspectors have
notified the school that due to ongoing complaints, they
will monitor the situation and infringement notices will be
issued if necessary.
Also, a reminder that children are not to be
dropped off in the North East Road driveway.
Cars that stop along this driveway can cause
traffic to dangerously ‘bank up’ behind them
and overflow onto North East Road. Please
continue onto the gravel area alongside the
Church. This is a much safer place for children
to exit cars. Thank you for your cooperation.
