Spirituality of Stewardship

Following the archdiocesan Synod,
I asked that from time-to-time we
“shine a spotlight” on top priorities that
came from the Synod. We have been
focusing on Evangelization and the
Sunday Mass for a little over a year and
have seen more emphasis being placed
on inviting people to Mass and helping
parishes to focus on moving from
“maintenance to mission.”
Whether we are sharing our time, talents, or material
resources, we are extending ourselves, and becoming
instruments of Christ in this world. We give great praise to
God, the giver, by sharing our gifts gratefully in justice and
love with others.
Focusing on the mission Jesus gave us, stewardship and
giving of ourselves, is how we form ourselves as intentional
disciples. I look forward to exploring this area with you
further throughout the year.
If we are serious about moving
from a maintenance approach to mission focused ministry,
we need to continue to develop the area of Evangelization
and the Sunday Mass while expanding our focus to other
areas as well. With this in mind, we will be “shining the
spotlight” on the Spirituality of Stewardship in the New
Year.
Many of you are familiar with my top three priorities Catholic Identity is Who we are, Evangelization is What we
do, and Stewardship is How we do it. Stewardship is how
we use our time, gifts and financial resources to further the
mission of the Church.
Stewardship isn’t just about giving money. Stemming
from each individual’s personal relationship with the Lord,
true stewardship is not about what we do, but rather about
who we are. It defines a way of life for intentional disciples.
Each human being has been given a unique set of gifts;
family and friends, interests and talents, material goods
and financial resources. Faithful stewards are continually
making conscious decisions about how these gifts, even
those that have increased through hard work and individual
diligence, will be shared with others and returned to the
Lord.
At first glance, returning gifts with increase to the Lord
can be difficult to grasp. Obviously, God does not need
our talents, money or other resources. Yet, we are called to
build his kingdom here on earth through good works and
active ministry.

Espiritualidad del Discipulado

Después del sínodo arquidiocesano,
pedí que de vez en cuando nos
enfoquemos en las prioridades
principales que surgieron del
Sínodo. Nos hemos enfocado en la
Evangelización y la Misa dominical
durante más de un año y hemos visto
que se ha puesto más énfasis en invitar
a la gente a Misa y en asistir a las
parroquias a pasar de “mantenimiento
a misión”.
Si tomamos en serio el avanzar de un enfoque de
mantenimiento a ministerial en misión, debemos continuar
desarrollando las áreas de Evangelización y la Misa
dominical mientras ampliamos nuestro enfoque en otras
áreas también. Con esto en mente, estaremos “acentuando”
la espiritualidad del discipulado en el Año Nuevo.
Muchos de ustedes ya conocen mis tres prioridades - la
Identidad Católica es quiénes somos, la Evangelización es
lo que hacemos y el Discipulado es cómo
lo hacemos. El discipulado es cómo
usamos nuestro tiempo, dones y recursos
financieros para promover la misión de
la Iglesia.
El discipulado no es sólo dar dinero.
Partiendo de la relación personal de cada
individuo con el Señor, el verdadero
discipulado no es sobre lo que hacemos,
sino quiénes somos. Define una manera
de vivir para los discípulos intencionales.
A cada ser humano se le ha dado un
conjunto de dones especiales; la familia
y los amigos, intereses y talentos, bienes
materiales y recursos financieros. Los
discípulos fieles están continuamente
tomando decisiones conscientes sobre
cómo estos dones, aún aquellos que se
han aumentado a través de duro trabajo
y diligencia individual, serán compartidos con los demás y
consagrados al Señor.
A primera vista, restituyendo los dones con aumento
al Señor puede ser difícil de entender. Obviamente, Dios
no necesita nuestros talentos, dinero u otros recursos.
Sin embargo, estamos llamados a edificar su reino aquí
en la tierra a través de buenas obras y siendo activos en
ministerios.
Si compartimos nuestros dones, ya sea nuestro tiempo,
talentos o recursos materiales, estamos compartiéndonos
a nosotros mismos y convirtiéndonos en instrumentos de
Cristo en este mundo. Alabamos a Dios inmensamente, el
dador, compartiendo en agradecimiento nuestros dones con
justicia y amor con los demás.
Enfocados en la misión que Jesús nos encomendó, en el
discipulado y en el acto de compartir nuestras vidas con los
demás, es como nos formamos en discípulos intencionales.
Espero explorar más esta área con ustedes a lo largo del año.
