A steady flow of carp to 2lb seals it A star-studded field was on show during the Maver Match This qualifier at Lindholme Lakes, but it was venue regular Steve Rothery who sealed his place in the money-spinning final after he hauled out a 97-7-0 catch. ANGLER FACTFILE Name: Steve Rothery Venue: Garbolino Lindholme Lakes Hookbait: Expander and hard pellets With top anglers travelling from all over the North of England for a shot at the glory, it was anyone’s guess who would eventually come out on top, but fishery-backed Steve stole the show with a fantastic display from peg 14 on Oasis to catch carp to 2lb steadily throughout the match. After starting off on a soft pellet, he was plagued by bits, but a switch to a small cage feeder and a 6mm hard pellet helped bring the better fish in. Rather than sit and wait for the tip to wrap around though, Steve kept pinging pellets over the top in the hope of catching shallow late on. With two hours remaining Steve grabbed the up-in-the-water rig and went in 12 inches deep and was into fish instantly and never stopped catching for the remainder of the event. Incredibly, Steve nearly didn’t enter the competition after having all his tackle stolen from the back of his van a month ago, but a late decision to buy a ticket from another regular who had to pull out due to other commitments proved more than worthwhile. “It’s a great feeling to get to the final and I’m looking forward to giving it my best shot and hopefully walking away from the final with a big cheque in my back pocket,” explained Steve. Second-placed John Kelly opted for a completely different approach from peg 6 on Oasis, and his Method feeder with a 6mm banded hard pellet almost matched the winner fish-for-fish, but he fell just short with an allcarp 90-10-0 netful. 41-0-0; 3 F Yardley, Ted Carter Preston, 37-10-0; 4 R Buckley, Fisherman’s Way, 36-10-0; 5 S Shepherd, Ted Carter Preston, 33-8-0; 6 I Martland, Ted Carter Preston, 24-0-0; 7 J Kenyon, Ted Carter Preston, 22-4-0; 8 M Reed, Highfield Fisheries, 22-2-0.
