Welcome Home!
T
oday at the 11am Solemn Mass, 25 men and women will
participate in the Rite of Welcome and Entrance into
the Catechumenate. This marks the end of the Inquiry
Phase of the RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) and
the beginning of the preparation for the Sacraments of Initiation
at the Easter Vigil.
I participated in this Rite in December 2003, seven
years ago this Advent. I had butterflies dancing in my stomach
all morning; I was both nervous and excited. While the actual
experience of the Rite is a blur, I have vivid memories that stand
out like snapshots in my mind. I remember what I was wearing,
the feel of the microphone near my lips, and how my mouth
was dry. I can still feel the majestic San Damiano cross around
my neck. It was a bright, cold, crystal-clear day. Reflecting on
the time that led up to this point, I
am struck by a couple of things that
I had forgotten.
First, I really challenged God!
My surprise at remembering this makes me laugh, but it’s
true. When I began exploring the
Catholic faith (of all religions!) I let
God have it. “You want me, God?”
I asked. “Well, you better overcome
each and every one of my objections
or forget it.”
I grew up in Los Angeles
in a devoutly agnostic family: we
celebrated Christmas and Easter but we never went to church.
We were of no particular faith and it never occurred to me that
this was odd. What was odd was that some of my friends went
to church. It was a completely alien concept to me. My father
instilled in my older brother and me that organized religion
“caused a lot of wars” and why would we want to be party to
that? It seemed that religious people didn’t question God, or
worse, weren’t supposed to question God. When I moved to
New York City in January 1999, I felt drawn to God and to the
Catholic Mass. This was disconcerting to say the least. What was
I thinking? Intellectualism was a time-honored Duncan family
tradition and religion was not invited.
Or so I thought.

Second Sunday of Advent
The great questions of life, art, and politics were
always topics of conversation at dinner, which my dad called
“communion” and “breaking bread.” When my brother and I
needed moral correction, my dad would tell us “Do unto others
as you would have them do unto you” and “Judge not, lest ye
shall be judged.” It would be years before I would understand
the Eucharistic foreshadowing or read those verses in the Bible.
Today, I just shake my head at my ignorance and more especially,
at my arrogance.
Second, I absolutely loved the process of becoming a
Catholic at St. Ignatius.
It remains one of the favorite periods of my life. The
inquiry phase began in September and each week I experienced
new insights and consolations. Meeting with a group of people
on a similar journey was exactly
the support I needed when I felt I
might be betraying my family values.
The RCIA environment was loving,
open-minded, and down to earth.
We became a community and it felt
safe to ask any kind of question.
Looking back, I can see I was falling
in love: with God, with the world,
and with life. It was as though I had
come home to a place I didn’t know
was waiting for me.
By the time I participated
in the Rite of Welcome, I had yet to
get all my objections answered. But
I knew enough to allow God to figure out the rest. More than
anything else, I longed to know Jesus Christ more intimately.
My challenge to God to overcome each and every one of my
objections slowly turned into God’s invitation to turn myself in,
to give myself up. That this invitation had been extended to me
the whole of my life still strikes me as miraculous. Participating
in the Rite of Welcome allowed me to say “Yes” to God, who
has been there all along. I was truly welcomed home.
Let us together pray for and welcome this group of
adults as they begin their journey toward Easter – and home.

Watching for Christ’s Coming
In the season of Advent, we look to the coming of Christ at the end of time, and we prepare ourselves to
celebrate his first coming among us at Christmas. Remembrance of the past is combined with preparation for the
future. Memory meets action.
In a certain sense, the Mass is an Advent prayer. At the Last Supper, Jesus did not tell his disciples, “Never
forget what I did for you.” Instead, he said, “Do this in remembrance of me.” He calls us to remember by doing,
to combine memory with action. In the celebration of the Eucharist, remembering and doing become one. Jesus is
as present in our midst as he was in that upper room, breaking the bread and sharing the cup; but it is a new kind
of presence, seen only with the eyes of faith. In the heavenly liturgy, there will be no need of sacraments, for there,
“celebration is wholly communion and feast” (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1136). Here, things are different.
We have only glimpses and flashes of the beauty that is yet to be. And yet, in the liturgy, we truly participate in the
heavenly liturgy. The Mass is our foretaste of the joys of heaven.
