Fuel3D Technical Note Challenging Subject No. 9: Transparent Material Description of the challenge: Transparent materials are particularly problematic for any optical 3D scanning system, Fuel3D included. The challenge occurs as a result of light passing through the transparent material and the camera therefore not being able to identify the physical surface position. Some surface information may collected from background which is visible through the transparent surface, but this will typically be distorted as the transparent material will act as a lens refracting the light. Following is an example of an image with a transparent subject (glass part filled with milk): Screenshot showing resulting data from attempting to scan this subject. Note the distortion where attempting to capture the clear glass area: Front View Side View June 2014: This Tech Note applies to the current consumer software.
