As Chairman, I have been fortunate enough to help guide and develop Hospitality Action over recent years whilst sharing my passion for their work across the entire industry. Yet recently my thoughts have turned to the many who have gone before me and made so many life changing differences. I am proud, as we all should be, to follow in their footsteps. Established in 1837 Hospitality Action, the Hospitality Industry Benevolent Organisation, will celebrate its 180th birthday in 2017. Beginning life as the ‘London Coffee House Keepers Association’, the charity has grown and developed in unimaginable ways. It has supported tens of thousands of students, countless retired industry members and all those of working age for nearly two centuries. Yet throughout the many decades, Hospitality Action’s core purpose has remained the same; to offer vital assistance to all who work, or have worked within hospitality in the UK and who find themselves in crisis through no fault of their own. Needless to say 2017 will be a year of fantastic celebration as we toast this landmark birthday. I am therefore urging you, our adventurous and inventive supporters, to make this 180th year one to remember. From undertaking a challenging cycle ride to hosting a birthday lunch there are so many ways we can all make a difference and enhance the birthday celebrations! Turn to pages 13-15 to see how our supporters have raised funds over the past 12 months and to be inspired by their achievements; on pages 10-12 you will learn how our regional boards continue to grow. On page 5 you can read about one family’s touching story and how we were able to help. Rest assured that your enthusiasm in our 180th year really will make a tremendous difference. When the floods hit Martin’s home last winter he came to Hospitality Action for help. In Martin’s words: “My family and I were directly affected by the flooding in Cumbria. Our house was completely flooded, five feet of water entered our house and, as a result, we lost almost everything. We moved things on top of tables and chairs but it wasn’t high enough and the water destroyed most of our belongings. We moved some things upstairs but didn’t have time to move everything. Our five year old son is scared every time it rains and we now need to replace almost everything that we lost.” Upon hearing Martin’s story we gave the family a new cooker, fridgefreezer and washing machine. We also gave the family a grant to buy new clothes and shoes and treated them to a day at LEGOLAND to help create new happy memories. Please support our work so we can help even more people suffering because of life-changing events. A lovely lady, listened and helped me and allowed me to talk through my own worries. It was a safe place to open up in confidence. My counsellor, Hilary, was very supportive and professional. I have taken her advice and am continuing to focus on the areas that we identified. Without you guys, I would not know what to do. I always get the best advice and support every time, you have been a godsend and I can't praise or thank you enough. The call I made changed and saved my life.” 7 re:action Golden Friends Golden Friends Get Togethers Getting together helps us to build better relationships with our Golden Friends, all of whom have dedicated many years to the industry and with over 1,300 Golden Friends we are hosting more get-togethers than ever before as they really do offer the perfect afternoon out. For many of our Golden Friends these get-togethers are a rare afternoon out but with over 1,300 Golden Friends across the UK we need your help to ensure we have enough for everyone. Nearly 900 Golden Friends will be attending at least one event this year, for some that’s still only one lunch a year with friends. For older people the onset of loneliness can happen gradually, sometimes preceded by a specific life event, especially one associated with loss; such as retirement, or bereavement. According to Age UK, more than 2 million people in England over the age of 75 live alone, and more than a million older people say they go for over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member. Hospitality Action recruits Phone Friends to help ease feelings of loneliness by regularly calling a Golden Friend for a chat and someone to say “Hi, how are you…” Calcot Manor Bristol College 9 re:action Regional Update Hospitality Action has three regional boards spread across the UK.
