“Go Tell” Communications From Pastor Linda
Mark 16:15 (NLT)
15 And
then he told them, “Go into all the world and preach the Good News to everyone.”
The above scripture is about you and me communicating the Good News (the gospel of Jesus Christ) to
everyone. In biblical times they did so by telling their stories, in music, preaching to crowds, gathering in
house churches and inviting people to learn. They were the original New Testament people!
You are a New Testament person. People in your sphere of influence need a touch from God. Yet
people are more connected to their cell phones (Facebook), endless cable channels on phones and
computers. Think about how your own productivity and life have changed due to technology. The younger
generations are even more engaged with technology because they know of nothing else!
Therefore it takes each of us personally and with technology to communicate opportunities to
connect with Jesus through the church. Today’s generation shop churches on line, by Facebook referrals
and more. Our church must be there too. The diagram below will help you see what makes up UCUMC’s
Communication Ministry and its evolving organization. There are many layers! Many are laity driven and
some are staff driven. You can also see all the ways your church communicates with you personally.

Mission of the Month
OPERATION BACKPACK
Operation Backpack is part of our outreach ministry to support the
school next door, Rose Garden Elementary (RGE). A large
percentage of students at RGE are considered to be economically
disadvantaged. Most of these kids get free breakfasts, lunches, and
snacks at school during the week. However, on weekends and
holidays, many simply do not have enough to eat at home.
Operation Backpack is our mission to provide backpacks full of food
to feed these hungry school kids on the weekends.
Every Thursday morning a team of volunteers sets up an assembly
line in Fellowship Hall to fill backpacks with food for the coming
weekend. Our team is currently filling more than 40 backpacks every
week that go to feed over 70 kids. The food provided for each
student includes 2 drinks (both milk and juices), 2 lunches, 2
breakfasts, 3 snacks, and a fresh fruit. More of each is provided for
3-day weekends and holidays. Ample food is provided for every
child in the family even if they do not attend RGE. The full
backpacks are always blessed before they are delivered to the
school and classrooms; and, each backpack has a laminated card
affixed to identify that it comes from “people who care” at UCUMC.
A short Scripture reading is also included as are the times for our
services on Sundays and when youth Sunday school meets.
We ask now that you prayerfully consider supporting this essential
ministry so we can continue to keep the backpacks filled for these
children who may not have enough to eat on weekends. Food is
expensive and we will need to purchase much more to finish out the
school year. In addition to monetary donations, we also encourage
donations of food subject to certain guidelines. Most any type of
snack your children, or a grandchild, might like that is non-perishable
and fits easily into a backpack is usually okay. If you have any
questions or would like to help us on Thursdays, please contact Bob
Miller at 573-3065 or Sharon Boland at the church office at 6595555.

Young Adult Community
Just as a river flows we believe that God wants us to be intentional
about forming a young adult community. Every 4-6 weeks we will
gather to share meals, fun moments and life happenings. The below
picture is from our first gathering at Bubba’s 33. We had a great time
getting to know each other and I can’t wait to see what God has in
store for us this year!! For more info please text or call Scott K. at

From Our Youth and Family Life Ministry
What a great January we had with some Trampoline Dodgeball that
I’m still recovering from. I’ve included a few shots just to capture some
of the fun along with the cast of characters that we have.
Right now we are gearing up for our Midwinter Retreat and if you
would like to come out to help send off our students that would mean
the world in terms of support. By the way there were a number of
special donors that helped to offset the cost for this retreat and I just
want to say thanks for thinking about us.
Finally, our Wednesday Night Youth Program that we call POWERUP
will now meet from 4:30 - 6:30 pm. Students can come right after
school and do homework or just hangout! And of course, energized
teaching and Third Day Café will still be part of the midweek
festivities! Please keep us in prayer as we continue to advance this
ministry into our neighborhood!

LIVING DAY BY DAY - This class is facilitated by Buddy Bradshaw.
This class uses the Upper Room devotional, which you can buy in
the narthex every other month for a small donation. The class is for
men and women of all ages. After class, take your Upper Room with
you and continue to use it throughout the week. It is a great way to
get into a daily devotion time. Class meets in the Library.

From the Web and Social Media Ministry Team
We would like provide everyone with an update on the
progress of updating and creating a new upgraded and
economical website. The team met January 11, 2017 to
review the preview site and discuss any changes. The
consensus was that we are waiting to launch the new
site until all the pieces are in place so we can launch a
complete site. We are changing over from Ezekiel to
Square Space to host our site. It is a more cost
effective option that gives us lots of options for new
tools like an interactive calendar and QR codes. We are
setting up a YouTube Channel to stream our 11 am worship services and any special event videos. The
videos will be viewable on YouTube and on our website.
This is an example of what a QR code looks like. You can download the QR app and then click on our
own QR image which will soon be on many things. This takes UCUMC’s guests or yourself directly to
the website.

We Need Your Help In Linking Church FB Groups and Pages
If you are an administrator for any Facebook groups or pages affiliated with the church, we
want to link your info from the main Universal City UMC page. The goal is for the church’s
main page to come up first in a search. With all the related pages the church’s main page
is lost. The good news is we can all be linked together and they can also find your related
page. For example, we have come across Facebook groups both closed and public for choir, preschool,
the nursery, VBS, bible study and small groups.
If you are involved with one of these pages, contact us at [email protected] and share the
following: 1) who you are, 2) that you have an active or inactive page and the name, 3) if you need help
closing a page or group 4) if you want to link on the website (for example click on choir and there is a
link to the FB group), and 5) if you want to link to the main church FB page.
My goal is to have a pinned post on our main FB page with descriptions and links to all the groups with
your info. Also, please send website/social media posting questions to the webmaster email. Once we
get everything connected we will be doing a staff preview of the site. Fresh eyes always help to catch
any last minute little changes we might need to make.
Questions? Call Laura Mills @ 830-660-0746.

UCUMC Border Ministry ~ helping 2 Methodist Churches
and 2 Orphanages in Piedras Negras, Mexico
We experienced a marvelous adventure for 7 Team
Members (Pastor Linda included), who went across the Rio
Grande in January! Highlights included 122+ children at
Rey de Reyes Church for our mini VBS, a stop at Mary &
Flavio’s home to drop groceries & pick up his handmade
crosses, a stop at House of Mercy Orphanage where we
witnessed great faith by Pastor Ricardo & wife Karla whose
home was burned totally down, losing everything ~ with
faith they saw this disaster as “a new beginning”! Wow!
What faith! Pastor & Karla appreciated the cash donations
we carried from many of you! Our last stop was at Casa
Bethesda where Pastor Paulino shared his story, his faith,
and hhis hipes for the future for this Orphanage for 28
special needs orphans.

PRESCHOOL PEEKS
Connectivity with our Community through .... PRESCHOOL!
We had a few expectations when we decided to have a garage sale. We expected
our preschool families and our church families to donate our "merchandise ," and they did!
We expected it would be a lot of work, and it was! We expected to make needed money
for preschool, and, thankfully, we did! What we didn't expect was an unanticipated
opportunity to pop up.
We have been learning in church and in church meetings the importance of connecting
with the community in ways that will bring its residents to Christ. We came into
possession of some "Man of God" bookmarks and pocket coins, some women's
devotional booklets and some hand colored bookmarks labeled with our church
information. We decided to put them on the checkout table and offer them as gifts to our
customers.
We were also given many older Bibles from the refurbished Church
Library. We chose to give those Bibles away to anyone who wanted one.
Our biggest surprise was how visibly touched the people were when they realized we
were giving them these things for nothing. One woman said, "I can just have this? Really?
I can really have a big Bible?" This, of course, touched us and made us so happy we
were doing it. We truly connected that day. I'm glad we noticed.
