Integration of Quotations: The Destructors
1. Prove that Trevor lacks the ability to empathize.
“All this hate and love,” he said, “it’s soft, it’s hooey.
There’s only things, Blackie” (59).
Trevor is a product of his environment. Like the lorry
driver, he has become desensitized to the destruction
that surrounds him. He lacks an ability to empathize
with others, as he tells Blackie, “‘[a]ll this hate and
love’…’it’s soft, it’s hooey’”(Greene 59).
Trevor lacks an ability to empathize with others. He is a
product of his destructive environment and feels that
there are no emotions, “‘there’s only things’”(59).
Trevor lacks an ability to empathize. He doesn’t believe
in “‘soft [and] hooey’” things like ““hate and love’”(59).
Everything is very materialistic to him because of the
environment he grew up in and he believes “‘there’s
only things’”(59).
2. Prove that Trevor isn’t doing this out of dislike for
someone.
“There’s nothing personal”, the voice said. “We want
you to be comfortable tonight” (63).
Trevor’s motivation for destroying the house is not out
of malice for Old Misery. Not only does Trevor provide
him with blankets when he is locked in the loo, he
reiterates more than once it is “‘nothing personal’”(59).
