Adjournment “Keeping Stettler Clean and Green” MINUTES OF THE HEARTLAND BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTEE MEETING April 2, 2015 Present: Councilor Will Brown, Councilor Karen Sernecky, Chairperson Rob Spencer, Lee Penner Call to Order: Chairperson Rob Spencer called the meeting to order at 12:00 pm 1) Additions/Agenda Approval 2) Confirmation of March 6, 2015 HBC Meeting Minutes 3) Business Arising None 4) Statement of Revenues & Expenses **We did not have quorum so did not have any motions. 5) Trade Show Schedule: Schedule was reviewed and Karen will work 1 to 4 on Sunday. The Town booth is across the aisle so some Town staff will be able to help out. Input on layout of booth: Graham showed the print outs he had prepared. 6) 2015 Projects a) Community Gardens- Rob and Lee prepared a memo to Town council to request location of 4204-50 A Ave as the best choice for the new Community Gardens. The road allowance will not be developed for some time. Access to the light industrial property will be granted across the railway tracks to the East. It is on the Council agenda on April 7th. Rob applied for the Miracle Grow: Grow 1000 grant for community orchard rather than Community Gardens as a location for a 3rd garden has not been found yet and it is unlikely to get done this year. The community orchard will be beside the Rotary Millennium Tree Park and will include annual and semi-annual fruit beds for community use. A possible location for the 3rd community garden was the boulevard beside The Brick on the east side of the creek. That boulevard contains some utilities so may have to be raised beds. b) Environmental Action – (see report attached to March agenda) Graham reported that Grace was not back yet but he has continued to put the green tips out. Trash 2 Treasure date that is set for April 25 and 26th. c) Downtown Park- No real changes have been made. Electrical tender will be back April 24th. d) Stettler Blooms- Rob showed us the posters ready for the different events held. He will be holding an information session on daylilies together with the Library. e) Banners and Signage – The signs have not yet been installed by Public Works. f) Tidiness- Karen had two Earth Day Clean up posters made by school kids in a contest. A BBQ will be held April 24th sponsored by Newalta and located at Sean’s no frills. Supplies can be picked up at the Rec Centre. g) Parks and Trees- Have 1 new person for the committee so far h) Heritage Conservation- Nothing to report 7) New Business – Because it is difficult to have the financial report for the previous month ready for a meeting so early in the month it was discussed if the meeting should be moved one week later. The group felt this was not necessary and will continue to meeting the first Thursday of the month. 8) Correspondence – None 9) Next Meeting- May 7, 2015 10) Adjournment- 12:50 pm HEARTLAND BEAUTIFICATION COMMITTE FINANCIAL STATEMENT Prepared: 2015-05-01 REVENUE: VENDOR 2015 Feb Mar Apr TD Friends of the Environ. To date, 36 municipalities have signed on. We have the right of freedom of speech, the right of freedom of association, the right to an education, …. But we do not currently have the right to a healthy environment. People have this right in 110 countries of the world, but not Canada. It should be recognized at all levels of government, beginning at the municipal level. "Shoulders" by Shane Koyczan and The Short Story Long YouTube video People should have the right to a healthy environment: to breathe fresh air, to drink clean water, to eat healthy food Over the past 6 months, the following 36 cities have signed declarations that people have the right to a healthy environment. Declarations are a commitment by municipalities to address local environmental concerns. • Municipal governments make decisions that affect the quality of the environment. • A municipal declaration is a commitment to principles that will protect, fulfill and promote the right to a healthy environment. Have extra plants? Swap your labeled extra perennials/bulbs at the 10th Annual Plant Swap on Saturday, May 9, 2015 at West Stettler Park from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon. If you are in need of plants, come and get them at no cost. If you are a beginner gardener, come get some perennials and some tips on gardening and composting. Questions: call Rob Spencer at (403) 742-4142. No one can do everything. Everyone can do something. Sponsored by the Heartland Beautification Committee May 11, 2015 GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK "Grass cycle" Leave the grass clippings on the lawn. It's better for your lawn, less work for you, and it's the #1 way to reduce your summer waste. Or, if you must occasionally pick them up, use your grass clippings as mulch to provide weed control and prevent moisture loss around flowerbeds, trees and shrubs. They are also an excellent addition to a backyard composter. No one can do everything. Everyone can do something. Sponsored by the Heartland Beautification Committee May 18, 2015 GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK "Keep your glass jars!" They are easy to wash (dishwasher-friendly), have an air tight seal, and don't leach plastic toxics. Store leftovers and dry goods in any glass jar (instead of buying containers). No one can do everything. Everyone can do something. Sponsored by the Heartland Beautification Committee May 25, 2015 GREEN TIP OF THE WEEK "Bike to your Destination" All Stettler residents live within a maximum 10 minute bike ride to downtown. Leave your car at home and bike to your destination. It's great exercise, it saves emissions, it saves money and it's refreshing! One win for the planet and 3 wins for you! No one can do everything. Everyone can do something. Sponsored by the Heartland Beautification Committee
