Be aware that these lists may NOT be updated seasonally. Always verify labeling pertaining to your individual health conditions. Manufacturing can change. Holiday candy is especially questionable. Seasonal products may be packaged in a facility with additional cross contamination risks. Candy ingredients may be gluten-free, however processing may result in the final product not being gluten-free. This is similar to putting gluten-free bread in a gluten contaminated toaster. The gluten-free bread would no longer be gluten-free because of cross contamination. For people with celiac disease, it is crucial to prevent cross contamination. If you are very sensitive to gluten, always choose a product that has the lowest ppm. This symbol indicates gluten the product has been tested to indicate gluten present is less than 5 ppm under the Celiac Support Association Recognition Seal Program. Tips for Handling Halloween Option 1 Use this list to buy candy that is gluten-free and put in a small Ziploc bag to take to a few selected neighbors (3-4). Explain your child has a medical issue with food and ask them if they would mind giving this bag of candy to your child instead of other candy. Label the bag with your child’s name. Remind your child to say their name when they get to the neighbor’s house. You want to go up to the door with them so the neighbor remembers the candy bag. Send thank you notes the next day. Option 2 Put an assortment of different kinds of candy or gluten-free cookies in small Ziplocs ahead of time. Sort through all candy when your child gets home and separate the non gluten-free candy from the glutenfree. Replace with your pre-packaged treats. Barter candy for restaurant or store gift cards, dollar bills, movie tickets, skating rink passes, bowling passes, or other items. What to do with the leftover candy? Donate extra candy to your school, place of employment, or food banks and shelters. For School Supply your child’s homeroom teacher with a gluten-free candy list several weeks ahead of time and ask them to attach it to the parents’ newsletter. This will give the parents and teacher an opportunity to provide gluten-free treats your child will love. Plan to plan ahead, and follow up with notes of appreciation. • • • • • • Contact the homeroom parent sponsor several weeks in advance to request that craft and party activities are gluten-free, so your child can freely participate. Ask if anyone is bringing cupcakes or cookies and offer to supply an appropriate substitution for your child. Offer this gluten-free candy list to the teacher/sponsor as a helpful resource. Volunteer to help with the Halloween party as a way to spend quality time with your child, and create a positive experience for all. Keep the gluten containing cakes and cookies separate from the gluten-free treats. Prepare individually wrapped gluten-free Halloween treats for your child. To help party planning, give the treats to the teacher a day or two early. Emphasize the importance of hand washing as a daily routine, and before passing out candy to avoid cross contamination. CSA provides this information as a guide towards a gluten-free lifestyle. October 2015
