I have to say that I was blown away by the standard of the work and the range of imagery and technical skills in both print media and ceramics. My thanks to Susan, Ken and Suzie for organising such a successful show and also to all the Block 1 pupils for their creative work and enthusiasm. Please do visit the gallery before the show finishes tomorrow. Congratulations to all the pupils who so richly entertained us last Friday in the LAMDA JAW. Great to see so many parents there and thank you for your enthusiastic applause and support for drama at Dunhurst. Biddy and Deborah had worked their magic to build the confidence in the children so that they were able to perform their pieces with such life and conviction. A thoroughly engaging evening, full of surprises. As part of their English curriculum this week, Group 3 have been filming with a professional film maker and learning the skills of story telling and communication as part of their project on the spoken word. We look forward to seeing the films in future and I have no doubt there will be parent viewing opportunities too. I hope that you have seen all the communications about the exciting John Badley Foundation weekend. It starts tonight with the 3 Schools Quiz and then at 2.00pm on Saturday we have the Three Schools Dog Show and Fete hosted by our very own Friends of Dunhurst. If, like me, you have a rather unattractive, smelly and old dog, fear not as the FoDs have been very creative with the categories and there is something there for everyone. There will be stalls, village fete fun and games and plenty of cakes and refreshments to see you through the afternoon. It was a real blast last year and even those without a dog, or with a grotty dog, had a very enjoyable time. In response to a request from parents in Groups for a different time for the half termly pastoral meetings, the next pastoral meeting for parents with children in Groups 1 and 2 will take place in the Sam Banks Pavilion at 4.45 – 5.30pm on Friday 13th May, and for Group 3 on 20th May at the same time and place. We hope this will suit more parents and enable you to see some JAW athletics at the same time. Have a great John Badley Foundation weekend! This annual 'grudge match' continues to this day. It is from these meagre beginnings that the Gentlemen of Bedales Cricket Club (GoBCC) has emerged. Parents and teachers alike, having picked up a cricket bat once again after decades of merely watching the experts, realised that there is a slim chance of achieving that match saving innings, or finally taking that illusive hat-trick or indeed, actually hanging onto that catch! So, in the early 2000s, parents and teachers of the Bedales Schools, having completed combat in the annual grudge fixture, put aside their differences and formed a combined team to take on local village sides - The Gentlemen of Bedales Cricket Club was born. The team now enjoys a number of annual summer fixtures, having the use of the marvelous Bedales Memorial pitch as a home ground. The team has grown to include teachers, parents past and present, Bedales students past and present, and other like-minded cricketers. GROUP 1 - BIOMES INVESTIGATION Group 1 continued their biomes investigations this week – looking at where the main world biomes are on a world map and researching the key features of each one. Later in the week, the children worked in pairs to explore the Eden project – the world’s biggest ‘conservatory’ and world’s largest ‘captive’ or indoor rainforest. The children then selected a biome of their choice to build a tiny Dunhurst Eden dome (smoothie cup lid) that displayed their biome in miniature. Melissa and Jonathan BACK What’s Been Happening... GROUP 1M LITERACY – LINKING HUMANITIES AND LITERACY Group 1M listened to the beginning of a documentary called ‘Rainforests – Beneath the Canopy’ and to the narrator’s introduction. We practised taking notes from a video clip and then discussed the powerful words and phrases the narrator used to describe the rainforest biome. We then each wrote a sentence using our own powerful descriptions. Next, we came together to edit and improve our sentences, working as a group to help each other find effective words. We carefully ordered our sentences to create a new introduction for a rainforest documentary. Melissa The light of the sun pierces through the gaps in the hazy cloud cover. Dramatic luminescent rays of sunlight shine through the thick emerald canopy. The colossal and ancient trees stand as tall as skyscrapers. The saturated, dank underworld beneath the canopy begins to glow fiercely. Trickling waterfalls plummet down the rocky edge of a river. Ferocious creatures creep and stalk amidst the sheltering rainforest foliage. The slithering snakes slide and curl through the twisted branches. Silent, pitch black panthers sneak toward their unlucky and unsuspecting prey. Suddenly, booming claps of thunder shake the ground, startling the forest’s inhabitants. BACK What’s Been Happening... BLOCK 1 ART EXHIBITION AT THE FLORA TWORT GALLERY Block 1 have been looking at the vernacular architecture of Petersfield, shopfronts and buildings. Flora Twort’s deft drawings and watercolours of daily life in Petersfield last century were a starting point to looking at the local surroundings. Pupils also investigated the work of another resident of the South Downs, Eric Ravilious and particularly his prints for the book ‘The High Street’ (1938). They created colourful and lively relief prints and ceramic tiles that are being exhibited for two weeks at the Flora Twort Gallery, until 7th May (this Saturday). Last Friday we had a lovely Private View at The Flora Twort Gallery for the Block 1 exhibition; photographs were taken and can be found on the Bedales website. Here is the link to the photo gallery of the Flora Twort exhibition. BACK Sport News MATCH REPORTS U9 Cricket v Seaford Hello, hot weather! Welcome to GU32! On a perfect spring day the Group 1 boys took on Seaford in the latest fifteen over cricket match (F15). Zeb, Captain for the day, led the terrific ten onto the lush grass in front of the home supporters – Nat, Lucy, Tabitha and Isabelle. Our pre-match warm up had consisted of a final practice focusing on minimising the number of wides and no-balls and establishing the correct body position when fielding, namely creating a crouching ‘human shield’ so that if it misses the hands the ball at least hits the body to prevent runs being scored. Having lost the toss, we were to field first. Jack started with a steady first over before Eric captured two wickets in his over! Zeb bowled a consistently controlled line and length before both Charlie and Ned took a wicket each. Ben, Ed, Harry and Oscar all kept the scoring low as Dunhurst put real pressure on the batting team. At the end of Seaford’s innings they had scored 260 runs. Knowing they were protecting quite a low score Seaford kept their bowling tight and didn’t allow our boys much space to hit many run-scoring shots. The critical over was mid-innings with Ned and Harry at the crease. The runs scored in that over were: 4-4-4-6-4-6! Ned hit three fours and a six and, giving Harry a chance, the batsmen swapped over and Harry then hit a four and a six himself! One of the sixes actually hit a car parked beyond the boundary! I can confidently report that the dent in the driver’s door was (al)most certainly already there before the over commenced. Our final score was a victorious 292 with that single over of 28 runs almost being the balance between the two scores. A tremendous effort from all involved and a wonderful tea in the pavilion afterwards – surely the most civilised culinary occasion in any sport worldwide? MVP to Ned for his run scoring blitz and excellent bowling: pacy and accurate. A big thanks as always to the parents for supporting their boys and well done, again, to all the boys who played so well. Jonathan BACK Sport News MATCH REPORTS U9A Rounders v Meoncross The sun was shining and the under 9s were eager to play their very own U9 match against Meoncross at Dunhurst. The girls were sent in to bat first against Meoncross’ capable bowler. With strong hits from both Sophie and Pandora scoring a rounder each, the girls managed to score a total of 4 ½ rounders off 24 good balls for the innings. With some excellent bowling from Posy and good fielding skills from the girls, the match finished with Meoncross scoring 6 rounders to Dunhurst’s 4 ½ in a very close and fair match. With time to spare, the two teams combined to form two new, mixed teams. Only having one bat each, the girls were able to try new fielding positions whilst making new friends. Overall a very successful afternoon of Rounders with Pandora being named MVP of the match. Well done to all the girls who played in the match. Lucinda U11 Rounders v Lavant House Dunhurst made a strong start in the first innings- winning 5 Rounders to 3 ½. In the second innings, Lavant batted first and our fielders had identified who their big hitters and adjusted their positions accordingly. Tori's bowling was strong and she adapted well to the left handed batters. Millie K was excellent on 2nd base, and worked well with Leela who was supporting 2nd base. Mia, on first base showed great tactical awareness throughout the game and stumped 2 players out. Zoe was alert as back stop and combined well with Tori and Millie K. Dunhurst got all the batters out with 2 balls to spare. Batting was next for Dunhurst and they knew they had to beat a total of 7 ½. Ellen and Millie H showed a great range in their batting skills and well done to Olivia and Eliza for making their Rounders debuts! Dunhurst scored 10 rounders in total to go on and win the game! A great team win- well done girls! Congratulations to Millie K for being named the bees knees! Shelley BACK Sport News MATCH REPORTS U10 Rounders v Lavant House What glorious weather to play a game of Rounders in! Dunhurst batted first, with some good hitting from Sage, Izzy, Mia and Rosie. The girls scored 6 rounders in the first innings- their highest of the season so far. Fielding was next, and Rebekah was strong on 2nd base, getting 3 players out by stumping them. Nell stumped a player out on first base and Imogen did well as back stop. Lavant had some good hitters and made the most of a few fielding errors by Dunhurst. After the second innings, the game ended 11-17 to Lavant House. The girls batting was much improved in this game and this bodes well for future games. Well done to Rebekah for being named the bees knees. Shelley U11 Cricket v Princes Mead On a perfect cricketing afternoon, the U11 cricket team travelled to Princes Mead for the 2nd league match of the season, following their friendly last week. Princes Mead won the toss and elected to field first. The game did not start well with a wicket being taken on the very first ball of the match. The team reacted well to the early setback and did not let the pressure get to them. Some neat shots, producing some wonderful boundaries pushed the score on. The pleasing total at the end of the innings was slightly over shadowed by the number of wickets taken, but none the less we had built a defendable total. Princes Mead came out strongly after the tea break and despite some accurate bowling by Joe C, we could not quite keep their run rate down enough and they ended up winning the match. Man of the match went to Ed for his fantastic running between the stumps and Joe for his excellent bowling. Will U11 Cricket v Kingscourt (H) 245-245 Dunhurst U11 played at home this week against Kingscourt. For many it was their first opportunity to represent their schools at this majestic sport. Kingscourt won the toss and opted to bat, Dunhurst took to the field and under the beating sun prepared for what was to become a rather close knit battle. Kings court were subjected to a barrage of bowling styles from the Will firecrackers to the Elwood devious ground skimming spinners. Kingscourt played well but Dunhurst kept them locked into their crease. After a quick break we swapped over and Dunhurst prepared to bat. Fearless swinging and crackling swipes, Dunhurst faced some stiff bowling and fielding, but, ALL players dug deep and showed outstanding commitment right up to the last ball. So strong was that commitment that when the final ball was played we all wanted to carry on playing. The umpires collated the runs, no balls, wides and wickets and after a quick deliberation and tally check agreed on a 245-245 draw (yes we started on 200). Both umpires agreed it was an outstanding effort by all and we all celebrated with a lovely match tea (thank-you Jamie and the Kitchen staff), whilst sat on the steps of the pavilion, enjoying wild stories of the ball that got away and basking in the late afternoon sun. David U13A Cricket v Seaford The U13s travelled to Seaford on Wednesday 4th May on a gloriously sunny and summer like day. The Dunhurst boys batted first and got off to a cracking start. They seemed to be cruising to a massive total. Huw knocked a 50 and then retired – a great accomplishment. Will S added 22 and Will R and Daniel V contributed 5 each. Unfortunately the innings somewhat ground to a halt with only two runs being scored off the last two overs (four off the last three overs). So Dunhurst ended on 119 for 7. The Seaford innings started and they were soon racing towards the Dunhurst total helped along by some wayward bowling. Luca M took a wicket in the last over bowled but Seaford knocked off the total for the loss of one wicket in twelve overs. The bowling of 41 extras by the Dunhurst bowlers tells it’s own story... Match result – 9 wicket loss. Man of the Match – Huw for his 50. Steve BACK Sport News MATCH REPORTS U13 Rounders v St. Edmund’s The U13s had a brilliant start to their rounders match against St. Edmund’s. We won the toss and went into field first, which is always the best option! Ella delivered smooth and accurate bowls and many of the opposition opted not to take many risks around the track, keeping the score low. Livvy covered third deep well and Daisy communicated to Millie out on second post. Tiana did some great backing up on 1st post, getting one of the opposition’s ‘big hitters’ out early on and Daisy kept a watchful eye with the backward hits, always throwing to 2nd post to prevent St. Edmund’s from scoring. When we went into bat, Anne and Millie used the ‘no ball’ rule to their advantage and took every ‘no ball’ they could, so that they could score and essentially get their team another ‘free’ bat. St. Edmund’s were clued up with Millie being able to hit left field and despite moving fielders out to the left, Millie kept spotting the gaps and would hit wherever a fielder wasn’t standing. Natasha made good contact with the ball and always looked carefully at when she could run. At half time the score was 9 ½ rounders to Dunhurst and 6 to St. Edmund’s. When St. Edmund’s came to bat in the second innings, they came back with a vengeance and took as many risks as they could and scored a higher number of whole rounders. Our throwing and catching was much weaker than in the first innings which meant the opposition were scoring by quite a number of our dropped balls. Ruby worked well in backstop and 4th post and Natasha moved quickly for the left handed batters. St. Edmund’s scored a massive 12 ½ rounders in their second innings which meant we had everything to play for. Boo, gave everything she could to her batting, and swung the bat against some very hard balls from the St. Edmund’s bowler but it was looking like we couldn’t close the gap on the score . There were some big hits from Millie, Anne and Tiana and fortunately we gained a few points from some no balls. The final score was a draw 18 ½ - 18 ½! Well done to the girls for listening well and pushing themselves when they needed to and well done to Anne for getting the ‘Bees Knees’.
