•
The origins of the fairy tales
Fairy tales are a variation of the popular tale or fable. Share with them the fact of
being a short narrative, transmitted orally, and where the hero or heroine has to face
major obstacles before triumph against evil. Typically involve some kind of magic,
enchantment or metamorphosis. Talking animals are very common in them. "Beauty

and the Beast" is a good example. Usually fairy tales are similar in countries where they
have a shared culture.

Now it is your turn: Try to start Cinderella’ story
4. Reading Cinderella’ story
Once upon a time there was a beautiful girl, called Cinderella who lived with her
stepmother and her two stepdaughters. After her father’s death, the daughters forced
Cinderella to do all the house chores, for this reason Cinderella’s
clothes were not only old but also dirty.
One day the king announced that his son needed to choose a girl to
be his wife. So he was inviting all the girls to come to a ball at the
palace. Cinderella's stepmother bought the most expensive dresses
to her daughters, but none for Cinderella. Even so, they mocked
Cinderella saying she could not go to the ball because she was ugly
and dirty.
The expected night came and they took the carriage and went towards the
palace. Cinderella was left alone. She started crying. Suddenly her fairy godmother
appeared saying that she would help her to go to the ball too. The fairy using her magic
stick turned a pumpkin into a coach, two mice into horses and lizards into coachmen.
The dirty clothes of Cinderella were transformed into the most beautiful dress that any
princess had ever had. Finally she gave Cindy a wonderful pair of glass shoes. But the
fairy-godmother advised Cinderella that she should have to come back before midnight
because all the magic would disappear at 12 o’clock.
Cinderella agreed and smiling took the carriage and went to the ball. When
Cinderella entered the room, the prince got delighted with their beauty and fell in love
with her. They danced hours and hours. Nobody recognized Cinderella, even her
stepmother or the stepdaughters. But at midnight, Cinderella remembered her fairy
godmother’s advices and ran out from the palace to the carriage and disappeared. She
was so in a hurry that missed one of her little glass shoe.
The prince picked up the shoe and said that he would only get married if he
found the owner of that shoe because she had won his heart.
7
All of the girls of kingdom tried the glass shoe on, but it didn’t fit well to
anyone. The stepmother's daughters were very upset because the glass shoe didn’t fit
their feet. They had arrested Cinderella so that she couldn’t try the shoe on, but
Cinderella found a way to get the room in time to try the shoe. It fit her foot very well.
So she was taken to the palace and the prince married Cinderella and they were happily
ever after.
