BWD TOUR MODULE: GRADES 4-12 STREAM TABLE DEMONSTRATION TOUR OBJECTIVES: Students will be acquainted with and able to generally: • Define/Describe: Watershed/Sub-Watershed “Dynamic Equilibrium” Runoff, Erosion Groundwater Base Level Streams Headwaters Cutbank Pointbar Riffle Pool Meander • Compare/Contrast: o Free Flowing vs. Impounded Stream o Lake vs. Reservoir o Erosion vs. Deposition o Aggradation vs. Degradation • Explain: o 3 Major Factors Affecting WS/Stream Development: 1) Geology; 2) Climate-Water Cycle; 3) Slope o Drainage Patterns o Stream Classification o Stream Dynamics o Beaver Lake Source Waters o How dams affect streams o Land Use/Land Change: The affect of human population growth and activities on watershed/stream dynamics o Ways to mitigate, minimize, reduce streambank erosion GROUP SIZE: Maximum of 30 students with 1 adult per 10 students. CLASSROOM PRE-REQUISITES: INTRODUCE/REVIEW concepts in the BEAVER LAKE WATERSHED PASSPORT, available on the BWD EDUCATION & OUTREACH webpage at www.bwdh2o.org): Water Cycle Watersheds How Humans Use Land Water Sources, Use, & Pollution. DISCUSS/COMPARE & CONTRAST Characteristics of streams in different climatological, geological, and/or topographic settings Densely vegetated vs. cleared Land/Water boundary (Riparian Zones) Stream response to low flow and flood stage conditions Flood vs. Flash Flood Factors that increase the potential for flash flooding; Ways to reduce flooding. ITINERARY: 60-90 minutes total LOCATION: Meeting Room: 30-45 minutes Stream Table: 30-45 minutes BWD TOUR MODULE: GRADES 4-12 STREAM TABLE DEMONSTRATION MATERIALS: Computer/DVD Player/Projector DVDs/Video Options Beaver Lake: NW Arkansas’ Ace-In-The-Hole Bridge to War Eagle Where Does My Water Come From?
