November and December Newsletter
We have had a fantastic half term! The children have enjoyed our
theme of 'Fire and Ice' and we have learnt so much.
We began the theme creating our own KWL grids. (What we KNOW,
what we WANT to learn and what we have LEARNT
We kick started the theme by writing a class poem all about Ice. The
children were given the stimulus of watching a Photo story on the
interactive whiteboard of animals trying to survive in Polar regions.
The poem was titled 'A Worrying World' and every child contributed
their thoughts and ideas to create a fantastic piece of writing at the
end. Ardderchog!
For bonfire night, we put our Welsh language skills to use. We read a
lovely poem called … and used this as inspiration to write our own
bonfire night poem. We focused on interesting verbs and nouns.
We have enjoyed learning about the polar regions and thought about
what we would need to go on an adventure of the Arctic. We were
given a price list for various shops to buy suitable clothing for the
adventure and calculate what we could buy with a set budget.
We have been developing our measuring skills and have moved onto
converting units of measure. m to cm by multiplying by 100 and cm
to m by dividing by 100. We then had a numeracy challenge where
we had to apply these skills to find out how much rope we would
need to climb various mountains in Greenland.
In maths sessions we have also been working on formal written
methods for addition, multiplication, money and time.
The children were given the challenge of booking a holiday to
Lapland. There were quite a few deals in the holiday brochure and
the children had to work out which hotel was the most affordable.
There was also a task of trying to book flights to Alaska and the
children had to work out the time of each flight and how long it
would take to get there from different airports.
Pyramid Poems- We have been focusing on developing the use of
adventurous vocabulary and interesting adjectives. We then used
this to write our own pyramid poems.
We were very interested to find out about animals that live in cold
places. We used our research skills to find out about the animals
habitats, offspring, hunting techniques etc. We then used this
information to create our own pages for a class encyclopaedia.
We have really enjoyed having Jack from Swansea City Community
Trust in every Thursday. We have had an outdoor PE session where
we have focused on finding and exploiting space, defending an area,
moving with a ball. Jack has also been carrying out literacy and
numeracy sessions with us. We have written newspaper articles,
player profiles, letters and analysed lots of data to answer questions.
We have all learnt so much and grown in confidence over the past
few weeks, diolch yn fawr Jack!
Next term PE will be on a Thursday. Please send outdoor PE kits as
we are hoping to use the yard if the weather is dry. This will be our
only PE session, children will not need kits on Fridays.
Thank you for your smiles and continued support. Have safe, happy
and peaceful Christmas and we look forward to seeing you in 2017.
