TUSD Family Wellness Resource Fair on Saturday, April 29th! Did you know that 40% of the food we buy in the United States is wasted? That’s like buying a whole pizza and throwing almost half away! When we throw away food, we are also throwing away the resources that were used to make or grow it. Some of these resources are water and land. All this trash also takes up huge amounts of space in our landfills. The good news is there are things you can do to help. Some ways you can help reduce the food waste at home are… REDUCE. Just take the food that you know you’re going to eat. If you know you’re not going to eat all the food that is cooked or bought, don’t put it on your plate. If you’re still hungry after your first serving, you can always get more later. REUSE. Eat leftovers. Instead of throwing away food you don’t eat, save it for the next day. Then you get to enjoy your favorite dishes two days in a row! RECYCLE. Make sure you’re putting your recyclable items like water bottles, cans, paper and cardboard in the recycling containers and not in the trash so they can be reused and made into new things! EXERCISE CHALLENGE!! April showers bring May flowers, but that doesn’t mean you can’t still be active even when you’re stuck inside. Kids need at least an hour a day of exercise to help their bodies grow big and strong! Sometimes that can be hard to do when the weather is bad or no one is able to watch you play outside. Here are some fun things you can do to get some exercise while at home! The Torrance Unified School District Family Welcome & Enrollment Center, in collaboration with the district’s Wellness Policy Committee, will be hosting a Family Wellness Resource Fair to promote a healthy Torrance community. The theme of the event is Planting the Seeds of Wellness by providing activities, resources and information for families and students to promote individual and community wellness such as health, exercise, nutrition, environmental issues, social & emotional health, etc. The fair is scheduled for Saturday, April 29, 2017, from 9:00am to 1:00pm in the front of the TUSD Family Welcome & Enrollment Center. We hope to see you there! Balloon Ball Freeze Dance Indoor Basketball Blow up a balloon and try to keep it off the ground for as long as possible by hitting it up. This one can be played by yourself or with others! Play music and show off those dance moves. When the music stops everyone stops. Hold your poses for 10 seconds and then start the music back up. Use any bucket or basket and a rolled up towel or T-shirt. Toss the towel in the basket, every time you make a shot take a giant step back and try again. Hallway Bowling Bubble Jumping Jacks Balance Beam Fill empty water bottles half way with water and set them up like bowling pins in your hallway. Use any ball you have to roll and knock them down. Have someone blow bubbles at you while you do jumping jacks. See how many bubbles you can pop in your hands and feet! Put a piece of masking tape on the floor in your living room or hallway. Pretend you’re a gymnast and try to walk on it in a straight line. Challenge yourself by trying to walk backwards!
