“Hey America!” Birth of Funk
NC Museum of Art (Every Monday - Saturday 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
Audio and video clips help illuminate the roles of African American musicians from eastern
NC who played prominent roles in the creation of funk – a genre of highly danceable music
that helped integrate dance floors across America.

NC’S Favorite Son: Billy Graham and His Remarkable Journey of Faith
NC Museum of History (November 6th-July 10th 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM)
Explore Billy Graham’s life and a ministry that spanned several decades and included the
Civil Rights movement and Cold War through memorabilia, audio, and video displays and
interactive galleries.
Meredith College Documentary Film Festival
Carswell Auditorium (Sunday January 24th 2 PM – 9 PM)
2 PM, Brewconomy
(60 minutes)This documentary by Meredith College alumna Camden Watts focuses on the
way the craft brewing industry provides jobs, increases tax revenue, strengthens
community ties, encourages agricultural innovation and production and generally
improves the overall state of the economy in North Carolina. Discussions with filmmakers
will be led by WUNC radio's Anita Rao and Bit & Grain's Sandra Davidson, cohosts of the
feminist podcast She & Her.

Girl Power (2 minutes) An essay documentary about filmmaker Angela Alford’s
daughter Aggie’s quest to prove that girls are powerful.)
Miss Todd (13 minutes) An award- winning stop-motion musical animation film by
Kristina Yee about one of the first women in aviation.)
The Night Witch (4 minutes) An animated documentary by Alison Klayman that tells
the story of “Nadia” Popova, one of the first women to fly WWII combat missions in
the Soviet Union.
Nell Shipman: Girl from God’s Country (4 minutes) A documentary trailer by Karen
Day for her feature-length film focusing on Nell Shipman, who directed and starred
in outdoor action films in the 1920s.
That Deputy Sheriff Might Surprise You (13 minutes) A short documentary by Kim
Best about Lucy Zastrow, the first female deputy in Durham County, and one of the
most celebrated women in law enforcement in the country.
Wednesdays in Mississippi (23 minutes) An excerpt of a recently completed
documentary by Marlene McCurtis that tells the story of Dorothy Height and Polly
Cowan, Civil Rights pioneers who developed a program to send interracial teams of
northern women into Mississippi in 1964.
Followed by the discussion with Rao, Davidson, and the filmmakers
7 PM, Althea
(83 minutes) This documentary by award winners Rex Miller, Elisabeth Haviland James,
and Nancy Buirski explores the life of Althea Gibson, the first African-American woman to
play (and win) Wimbledon and the U.S. Open. Followed by the discussion with Rao,
Davidson, and the filmmakers
