Errata Following errors were not corrected in Notes on Planet Earth, version 1.06. Note that page numbers refer to those shown during navigation on the CD or on printed pages. On CD (1) In Chapter 1, Plate Tectonics, Page 18, ninth word from end of sentence under A Dynamic Earth, should read “north”, and not “norht”. (2) In Chapter 2, Minerals, Page 1, delete the first sentence under Basic Chemistry. It is redundant and unnecessary. (3) In Chapter 4, Weathering, Page 3, second word from end of second sentence under Spheroidal Weathering should read “spheriodal” and not “spheriodial”. (4) In Chapter 4, Weathering, Page 6, thirteenth word in third sentence under Surface Area should read “chemically”, and not “chemical. (5) In Chapter 4, Weathering, Page 8, right column, fourth and fifth sentences in second paragraph, change K- to read K+. The new sentences should now read “This observation suggests that solutions migrating through soils tend to carry abundant K+ ions, but fewer Na+ or Ca++ ions. In other words they are saturated with respect to K+, but are under saturated with regards to Na+ and Ca++.” (6) In Chapter 5, Soils, Page 27, Figure 22 caption, sixth word of first sentence should read “is” and not “are”. (7) In Chapter 5, Soils, Page 29, Figure 24 caption, seventh word in second sentence should read “defined” and not “defiend”, and the twelfth word should read “typically” and not “typically”. (8) In Chapter 6, Sedimentary Rocks, Page 9, fifth word in second sentence under Inorganic Carbonates should read “(Figure 11)” and not “(Figure 10)”. (9) In Chapter 7, Metamorphic Rocks, Page 9, last word in second sentence under Summary should read “(Figure 9)” and not “(Figure 10)”. (10) In Chapter 8, Geologic Time, Part II: Isotopic Dating, Page 20, last word in second sentence under Calculating Ages should read “Figure 11”, and not “Figure 10”. (11) In Chapter 10, Structural Geology, Page 5, the twenty-fifth word in the first sentence should read “orange” and not “blue”. (12) In Chapter 10, Structural Geology, Page 5, insert after “In contrast,” in second sentence the following phrase: “throughout distortion by simple shear”. The second sentence should now read “In contrast, throughout distortion by simple shear, the normal b remains parallel to the Y axis.” (13) In Chapter 12, Glaciers, Page 1, fifth paragraph down in left column, third sentence, change “a” to “an”. (14) In Chapter 12, Glaciers, Page 2, caption for figure 1, sixth word should read “varieties” and not “varities”. (15) In Chapter 12, Glaciers, Page 6, last sentence, first paragraph under Budget of a Glacier, ninth word should read “budgets”, and not “budges”. (16) In Chapter 12, Glaciers, Page 7, second sentence in first paragraph under Glacial Movement, fifth word should read “the”, and not “The”. (17) In Chapter 25, Glaciers, Page 6, first paragraph under Causes of Glaciation, second sentence, thirty-fourth word should read “landmass” and not “landmasses”. Printed Pages (1) In Chapter 1, Plate Tectonics, page 6, ninth word from end of sentence under A Dynamic Earth, should read “north”, and not “norht”. (2) In Chapter 2, Minerals, Page 1, delete the first sentence under Basic Chemistry. It is redundant and unnecessary. (3) In Chapter 2, Minerals, page 3, second column, third paragraph from the top, the next to last sentence should read as follows: “Reviewing Figure 2 note that the 1s shell requires less energy to fill than does the 2s shell, and that the 2s subshell requires less energy than does the 2p subshell.” Italicized words were left out of the print material and should be added. (4) In Chapter 4, Weathering, page 2, second word from end of second sentence under Spheroidal Weathering should read “spheriodal” and not “spheriodial”.
