FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT ay DINNER-CONCERT JANUARY 29, 1956 CTiOK FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT emoniii DINNER-CONCERT FOR THE BENEFIT OF THE NATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR INFANTILE PARALYSIS BASIL O'CONNOR, President SPONSORED BY The "74" Club • FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT BIRTHDAY MEMORIAL COMMITTEE THE HONORABLE HERBERT H. LEHMAN, CHAIRMAN THE WALDORF-ASTORIA • NEW YORK • IANUARY 29, 1956 FOREWORD "We have only just begun to win." I think that is how our Founder, were he with us at this stage of the long fight against poliomyelitis, might have described the brightening prospect before us today. When Franklin D. Roosevelt died in April of 1945, the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis was supporting research which had as its ultimate object a preventive of polio. But the goal at that time lay beyond many mystifying horizons; the way led through many uncharted fields. Now the dream has come true. Yet, for many thousands, the joyous reality is too late. The need for help against shriveled limbs, against faltering breath, against blighted lives, continues. The organization founded by Franklin D. Roosevelt cannot, will not, let these people down. They must have care as long as they need it. And there is more we must find out about the polio virus and vaccine through continued scientific research. And skillful hands must be trained through our Professional Educational Program. That is why, in 1956, there is a call upon the generosity and the self-interest of the people of America. That is why there is a 1956 March of Dimes. President THE NATIONAL FOUNDATION FOR INFANTILE PARALYSIS DEDICATION by GOVERNOR AVERELL HARRIMAN Franklin Roosevelt was a man of such greatness, his horizons so wide, his comprehension so deep and his leadership so vigorous that this nation will be eternally grateful for his manifold and varied accomplishments. But aside from his official greatness, his personal life story stands as an inspiration to us all. To those who have suffered polio, his life is testimony to the fact that man's spirit can conquer any handicap. The development of the Salk vaccine—which gives us hope that polio will soon be all but eradicated—is in large part attributable to the nationwide and continuing campaign which he founded. The efforts organized around his name provided the funds that enabled outstanding scientific minds to concentrate on finding the preventative that is now being distributed throughout our land. At tonight's concert, as we commemorate the 74th anniversary of Franklin Roosevelt's birth, we also celebrate the fact that one more dread disease has been mastered, and that scientific research every day gives us new hope that man will triumph over other diseases and threats to the health and vitality of our citizens.
